The most pragmatic thing to do would be to build something that's fit to host Antrim club finals and inter county games with a view to expanding when funds become available.

What is preventing this happening?

Brentford built their 17,500 stadium for 70 million in 2020.

Sorry should say finished 2020. Started 2017. The more I look at it the worse this becomes. Imagine how far the 100 million would have went back in 2011 when Ulster GAA first made a balls of this.

The people marching in Belfast today was embarrassing, especially those who might be GAA members.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Where were they  marching to? And what did the banners say?

Seemed to be a thin veneer Sinn Féin led event.

Anyone know who it was aimed at? I'm assuming some version of themmuns?

Any questions asked of Ulster GAA? Any suggestion that they need to start making a move themselves?

Any feet held to the fire on how Sinn Féin fumbled the project having held the relevant ministry for a long time?

Were the SDLP on the hook, seeing how their minister made a total blunder to start the whole thing off?

Or was it entirely a "look over there" pie in the sky entitlement rally?

Get Casement Built.

Why? Was Hilary Benn and  Some British labour politicians  there?

I'd imagine  marching to the Ulster GAA  offices with  banners saying "just start building" would be  more effective.

Indeed.
They have been given such an easy ride this last 15 years.

Quote from: general_lee on April 06, 2025, 08:11:50 PMThe DUP are the reason we don't have a shared stadium at Maze.
Simply not true.

Yes, (most of) the DUP were against it, for political reasons rather than sporting. But Edwin Poots, for example, was wholeheartedly in favour. (You can probably guess in whose constituency The Maze is!)

Anyhow, the whole project was binned because the Accountants in the Dept. of Finance at Stormont concluded that the whole project could never pay its way and would be a financial burden for years to come.

And they were quite correct in doing so, which explains why after a few perfunctory objections for the optics, both SF and SDLP accepted the decision pretty much without demur.

Quote from: twohands!!! on April 06, 2025, 10:15:45 PMThe main issue with the current Casement plan is that it will probably be full one day a year, two-thirds/half-full for a handful of more days, mostly empty for the rest of the days it is in use and will be effectively closed the vast majority of days of the year.
Quote from: smelmoth on April 06, 2025, 09:33:58 PMNo financial plan for Casement should be viewing concert income as anything more than bonus income that might or might not happen.
Ulster GAA's very own Events Management Plan from 2018 estimated that a 34k stadium would be likely to be filled for precisely ONE sporting event per year, the Ulster Senior Football Final:
https://minutes.belfastcity.gov.uk/documents/s92471/APPENDIX%202d%20S76%20Annex%203%20Event%20Management%20Plan.pdf
(That's assuming Casement gets it every year, and not Clones)

As for concerts etc, the money is/was allocated specifically for sporting purposes, not other entertainment uses. On which point, why should the GAA, or any other publicly funded body, be permitted to use sports money to compete with other concert venues, whether Council owned or privately owned? At the very least, any non-sporting profits accrued should in principle go back to Stormont. Or do eg Garth Brooks gigs count as part of all our true Gaelic heritage?

Quote from: marty34 on April 12, 2025, 11:23:55 AMI think there's £120m currently available for Casement Park?

What size of stadium would that build?

To a very good spec. obviously - 20, 000 seater roofed and coporate stuff etc.

Anybody have recent costings of similar stadiums in Europe?
Re your bold, I posted the following last year:
"In Germany Karlsruher SC built a brand new 34.3k capacity soccer stadium for £130m (€155m), which only opened last year:

"While SC Freiburg built its own new 34.7k soccer stadium, opened in 2021, for £64m (€76.5m)":

Why would the EU contribute to a project somewhere which is not in the EU?
