PSNI invest in 10 new speed detector vans

Police in Northern Ireland are now paying civilians to operate speed camera detector vans.

Head of the PSNI traffic branch Muir Clark said it was a crucial factor in cutting costs.

He said that police were about to buy ten new detector vans equipped with digital technology.

The vans have been operating at a loss of £0.5m, but this year he expects to make more than £1m.

Using civilian operators was standard practice across Great Britian.

I thought they would be doing it to make the roads safer?????

"It is cheaper, it is more cost effective and that is why we do it," he said.
