Denn Forever

50 years since the integration of schools in the US.

30 years since the first black player for England soccer team.

Is there much integration of schools in the north?

Much done but a lot more to do.

There are some valid points in the piece although i get a feeling of a white supremist undertone to it. One thing I always found amusing is the TV shows we get from the US. Fresh Prince, Cosbys etc were all black casts and if there was a white in it he was always a nerd or an idiot. Groups need to realise that they should campaign for equal rights for all not for just one side. America is a nasty racist country, many of them are almost proud of it in my experience. That racism is present on all sides imo.

I suppose the Cavan breeding might explain the perception of some merit in the piece ::)
but how on earth did you NOT know that this was pure white supremacy drivel?

White America has a huge say in who became President, America has it's share of bigots just like Ireland has it's fair share and then some, that said I have never inmy life met anyone who was 'almost proud of it'.

That letter certainly has merit and to someone elses point it is ridiculous that you get instructed to say 'happy holidays and Christmas time, I was told to say that  by my boss and refused, it is Christmas and the PC brigade are doing their best to water down everything, it is sickening.

Black people can be racist as well, the problem is society is uncomfortable with that slant, black men can call another black man the N word, but if a white guy or hispanic guy says it all hell breaks loose, that to me is wrong.
Armagh, the one true love of a mans life.

pintsofguinness

any black person who calls another black person "nigger" is a complete idiot.

Thats a pretty silly statement.

The Irony. Cavan "breeding" used as reason for outrage in racism post ::)

The piece makes some points. All Black colleges etc etc are also racist are they not. The problem with the piece is that the writer went too far when blathering about how he should have the right to do exactly the same (i.e. have a all white college). I don't know where it came from but I made an educated guess - don't know why yo got your knickers in a knot about what i posted.

Quality post puckoon. Care to expand or even make an argument? Thats been my experience of the US and i've had extended stays in New York, LA, Chicago, St Louis and Indiana. I've had people talk about the "niggers", call basketball "nigger hoops" etc very openly as if it were a normal thing for 2 whites to talk about.

I have a black niece (my sister adopted her when she lived in S Africa) and i feel sorry for her when she's ready to start the secondary schools here as the majority of the Irish people are ignorant towards basically anyone that is not white and i can imagine the names she will be called at school. Although i have to say she will not be on her own as society is changing and there are more and more people from different cultures and backrounds in the schools now.

There are about 307m people in America. You say you've met many of these. What percentage are you talking about that dictates America is a nasty racist country?

Ireland has about 6m or so. Plenty of racism here, albeit ignorant.

I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Plenty of it about alright ONeill.  It's not only in working-class communitiies either, not saying you said it was, just saying it's prevalent through society.

I didnt think it needed expanding or argument Myles. You claimed that America is a nasty racist country and many of them are proud of it.

I think thats a ginormous generalisation and I think perhaps you got carried away with your opinion and brush stroked an entire nation. I think that is so obvious that I didnt feel the need to expand on the post.

What I will give you is that there are ignorant, intolerant, racist idiots everywhere and America is certainly no different. But I would'nt accept that America is any more nasty or racist than Ireland. Infact - for the first time ever Ireland is really experiencing immigration on a large scale and the racist attitudes that it is creating, and the racist undertones of Ireland right now are somewhat alarming.

EDIT: In all my years here, I have heard more than a few comments directed at the hispanic community - but I have never, not even once - heard any american say Nigger. Infact I am the only person that has used that word over here, and it is only when calling my friend back home who goes by that particular moniker.

Well, I have come across racism in the US but I'd have to qualify that by saying those I'm referring to are by no means representative of the general public. I have in-laws from the Cuban American community in Miami and in truth they look down on everyone else. Those people are either elderly Cubans who fled to the US when Castro took over Cuba or their direct descendants and would have come from the privileged classes over there so they only represent a minute section of American society. Still, their racism borders on antagonism where Blacks, Chinese, Mexicans  and Hispanics from South America are concerned..
