Fianna Fáil's 'conscience' in trouble?

Is Ciaran 'Chemical' Cuffe not one of the old guards?

He's been horrid quite and in a time where he's come from a 5 seater that will be a 4 seater it's not the time to be hiding one's light under a bushel.

In the next General election there will be him, Eamon Gilmore, Mary Hanafin, Barry Andrews, and an unknown FGer (Dinosaur Barrett surely won't run again) and the auld wans' favourite Trot, Richard Boyd Barrett, all vying for the 4 seats. It could get very nasty!

Why do people hate the Green Party and will be glad (if they do) if they fold?

Do they have a sinister underbelly ala SF? ???

I think a lot of this feeling comes from their main electoral base been  in the leafy parts of south Dublin, sandymount, ballsbridge etc. they were set up as a party of protest and having policies which were great in the good times but now in straightened times seem trivial and a waste of money. Gormless made promises about eithics in the dail and now look at the greens, patsys for every dodgy deal and decision been carried out by FF. Look at the fiasco in Gormleys own base of Sandymount regarding the incinerator, he as the minister of environment can not stop this from going ahead, no matter what he says and his elctorate, who are in the main people of influence and money in Irish society are afraid that their cosy way of life is under threat. Their rubbish should be, in their opinion be dealt with by Kildare or Meath but not on their "posh" doorsteps. The greens are a private shcoolboy click who have walked into a snake pit (FF) armed only with their posh school ties.  They are irrelevant tree huggers who have f**k all in common with main stream Ireland.

I'd forgotten about Cuffe, as has most of the world - shot himself in the foot.

I wouldn't agree with much of this - I think the Greens are essentially liberals with a focus on environmental issues.  They tend to favour either 'soft' or 'extreme' environmental policies, when the consensus is crying out for workable solutions.  For example, at present they're driving up landfill taxes to try to stimulate recycling without any plan to 'use' these taxes to invest in recycling infrastructure.

By the way Gaeilgoir, is this mainstream Ireland the same place that doesn't need multi-denominational education?

They did rename the '5p on the gallon of petrol' that some of us were familiar with in the 70s to 'carbon tax'

Wonderful really  :-\

I suppose there is no chance of Fianna Fail finding their own conscience.

I think they will if the nationalise both the banks and the entire property market.

He's gone! Bejaysus he went quick. Not sure if he resigned his seat, or his ministry.

Maybe it's because they lied prior to the last election, Sargent said he would not lead his party into govt, with FF, he resigned as leader after a deal was agreed - I mean, ffs, how stupidly meaningless was that, it shows utter contempt for the electorate.

What is it that makes the behavour ok for a TD but not a minister?

I was wondering that myself. Fair enough I can see the punishment in demoting yourself from Minister to back bencher, but from Minister of State to back bencher? Is there much of a difference?

The greens will be on the back benches for a long time so yes there is big difference for them.

You're being very optimistic referring to them in the plural!
