team that started

James Morgan 19
paul Mc keown 22
Danny O C   21
Stephen Finnegan  22
Aaron cunningham   20
Franny hanratty 20

Outside of Hearty, Oisin, Mickey Mac SK and AK the rest of the starting 15 are under 24.  that is young.

Thats only six under 24! Most teams would have that.

You are on to a loser there Winnie. The older guys were on to strengthen things up in key parts of the game and only really played cameo roles.

That team is made up predominantly of under 28s and that is YOUNG
DRIVE THAT BALL ON!!

Entertaining viewing. Although i'm not sure McQuillan is as bad as people are saying - there are a lot of fairly ruthless 'challenges' going on in there. And the pentalty call was sopt on. The second red was clearly the player's fault.
Did you see the hurling after, McQuillan would have only the keepers left. A poor display from the ref in a hard hitting but fairly clean game. He let McGourty away with an elbow and sent Cross' midfielder of for a mistimed shoulder which was at worst a second yellow if that. Gall's penalty was soft... some homer.

McQuillan was inconsistent too. Hanratty must have fouled about 6 or 7 times second half. He should have been off for persistent fouling - it would actually have helped Cross as they'd the game won and he'd not have missed the next game. Stewart fouled twice and walked. Wasn't sure about the cross penalty either.

Galls couldn't break down the Cross defense at all. They don't have a direct enough game and that suits teams like Cross. CJ was very poor and Rory Gallagher doesn't have much pace.

Niblock good as usual though. I thought Aaron Kernan showed his class - every time he got the ball something happened. Tony Kernan got an unbelievable amount of time and space too. Not sure who was marking him.

Surprised at clontibret getting beat never mind the margin.

Add that to the ones you quoted.

fair play to cross. thought st galls would have had too much for them. cross will take some beating now. another ulster and AI title beckons on that performace.

Let's not get carried away now.  I doubt if Coleraine or Burren will be easily beaten.  Also is was easy for Cross to get motivated for a home game against the AI champions.  This is bonus territory for them now as they are still very young and they will be missing Johnny Hanratty and Jamie for the next game.

How are they very young?
Paul Hearty..32
Paul Kernan 24
Aaron Kernan 27
Brendan McKeown 30
David McKenna 24
Johnny Hanratty 23
Micky McNamee.. 26
Stephen Kernan 27
Tony Kernan 23
Oisin McConville 35
Francie Bellew 35
John McEntee 34

Young  My Arse!

That makes 10 starters aged 24 or under.  Fish and Kyle Carragher are around the 23-24 mark as well.  The average age of the team would be around 23-24.  That is young enough.  They are experienced for their ages but every player in the central positions bar SK are under 24.

ONeill

Enjoyed that game. Oisin's class in the opening 20 mins won it. He edged Cross 4 or 5 ahead and Galls were never closing that gap.

That was some hit on Aodhan Gallagher in the first half after Gallagher had fielded majestically - better than anything in the International Rules - was it big McKeown? That moment typified Cross's approach today. Galls weren't getting out with a win.

Most of the Galls forwards were poor today and Cross had their work done on Kieran McGourty their playmaker. He came in for some close attention. Kelly tried to take the game to Cross but was going it alone.

Well done Cross. Didn't think they had the players to turn over Galls. That's a big blow for the Milltown men. A win would've cemented their legacy. It's a bit like Kerry v Tyrone in the 00s. Galls needed that win over Cross to put that to bed. Got the feeling both sides were aware of the importance, a class of egos.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Johnny Hanratty.  He can be proud of his days work and grafted really hard to allow the rest of the lads do the fancy stuff.  He plays on the edge but that is something that every winning team needs.

Have not read back any comments, so I'll give you my frank view on the game.

Beat by a hungrier team
Beat by a team that had the right tactics
Beat by a team that played better football
Beat by a team, that won't win the All Ireland
And has finally put to bed any notions that Cross aren't the best team in Ulster.

All I can say is this,

Fail to prepare - prepare to fail
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

He should have been put off long before he was for persistent fouling...

But he wasn't and that is not his fault.

Better in the hat than not!

Milltown Row2

Yes, i know the lads would prefere to be 'in the hat' but on that performance i can't really see (both teams) progressing.

Cross scored in the first half 2 from play, if a team was disciplined then they 'Cross' would not be in front. What did Cross score from play?

Hurler on the Bitch

I thought that Cross were a banker today .... sounded on the radio that a bit of hunger was missing around St Galls .. this old 'hard man' stuff might get you a reputation as a team in west Belfast but they were mixing it with a side for whom it was 'wee buns' ..

Milltown Row2

Hurler, we did not come down to mix it ever. never have we played that game. But if your drawn into that game and players lose their focus then thats what happens

Doesn't matter what you score from play or frees, they are still scores.  Cross got 6 points from play but at this time of year most games are won through frees, i said it before the game and will say it again.  Any team that can consistently get 12-13 will be within shouting distance of winning most games in November. Coalisland got 11 scores, Naomh Connaill 14 scores. Should Cross make the Final they will win it I reckon.  Burren/Coleraine will be hard to beat but if they get over them they will have Jamie back for the final and that will be a great boost.
