Quote from: Antrim on September 04, 2025, 09:26:36 PMIs it just me or are juvenile mentors getting worse?

Was at St Galls and Dunloy U16 hurling championship last Tuesday evening and some of the behaviour was absolutely despicable.

Clubs and county really ought to get to grips with some out of control mentors before something unsavoury happens.

Was at the match myself and didn't hear anything out of order from either management. Maybe I was standing on the wrong side.

Still can't believe Dunloy got beat. Would've fancied them to easily win the championship.

I agree with all of that 100%.

The behaviour was from the winning side and especially after the game.

Hope the lad sees sense and wises up.

What do you agree with?

I was at the side of the changing rooms and didn't see any behaviour from the management team that could be described as absolutely despicable, not one thing sticks out, I actually though they were very quiet and controlled. Can you name anything the mentors done to merit such a statement.

Quote from: Saffron71 on September 05, 2025, 08:04:48 AMThis behaviour from underage mentors seems to generally come from coaches who are in it to feed their own ego so in other words win at all costs.  If you're coaching at underage with a mindset like that you are more detrimental to the game on many levels. Underage should be about player development and trying to retain players whether that be in a playing capacity or other.  If you achieve success along the way then great but it should never be the absolute end goal.  The end goal should be how many are still involved in the club in x amount of years etc.  When coaches behave in a manner like mentioned above it is unacceptable.

Apologies, this is the post I meant to quote and agree with.

So you mustn't have seen what happened. I'll obviously not name names. One of the St Galls coaches approached one of the Dunloy coaches and made sure everyone heard him saying "Keep the hurling going up in Dunloy". There then followed a bit of chit-chat and then he let out a big 'yagh' laughing his head off.

That patronising statement of 'keep the hurling going up there' was something that was used towards all northern teams and always hurt to an extent, intended or not.
If it was said it was a low jab and the individual needs to have a look in the mirror to consider if that's how they really want to be and/or if it's appropriate behaviour.

It's just pretty low key to be taking to the internet to give out about IMO.

Appears the rage bait worked anyway.

Around the glens

Dunloy will be grand in the hurling. Present and future.

Great wee flick and handpass by neal mcauley to setup that ballycastle goal. Good result for ballycastle that one.

Group 2 in the intermediate championship looks interesting.

are there any updates anywhere on Cdall and Loughgiel ?
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

On the Ruairi's Twitter page. 10 pts to 8 in favour of Lgiel at HT.

You can't be putting on updates of games that are being streamed live...

(Sadly it seems like this is a thing)

I thought Mark O'Neill was superb today.

Cushendall well worth the win.

Behind almost all the game but well worth the win?

Loughile the better team today and very unlucky to lose today , big call from the umpire at the end ... ugly seens after it as a few loughiel supporters were over throwing punches towards the umpire in question .

Loughgiel fans not happy with ref - paddyjohn maybe showing his allegiances  ;D

(I saw none of it but the speculation is the 65 that led to the winning goal was wide).

Puts loughgiel on Dunloy side but I guess they'd likely have to beat them anyway if they want to win it.

They played until the final whistle. Maybe less time wasting and there wouldn't be so much injury time. 😉
