It had nothing to do with tariffs. It was a made up formula to suit their purposes. Any country whose percentage worked at at less than 10% was automatically hit with a 10% tariff anyway. Economists are scratching their heads given there was such a preamble about how all sorts of currency manipulation and point of sale taxes had been included in the calculation. All complete nonsense.

Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

A reasonably balanced insight into what Trump hopes to achieve with his tariffs and how it could all go pear shaped for the US and the global economy.

Look-Up!

Good read but that's a very long game and there would need to be political harmony in the US between reds and blues to pull that off over multiple administrations. Much like Obamacare, whatever Trump "achieves" in next 3 years, a lot will be reversed if Dems get in.

Plus if reading of their text messages is anything to go by, I don't think their thinking is near as nuanced or sophisticated as the article above might suggest.

Indeed. If it's so self-evident, why is the orange god-king rolling it out using bald-faced lies and distortions about how the US is supposedly getting screwed by tariffs imposed on them by other nations? As with the brainless demolition of the federal government Musk is simultaneously undertaking, most people would probably be receptive to a studied, well-thought-out restructuring, but that's not what we're getting on either front. Instead, it's thoughtlessly and recklessly taking aim with a blowtorch on a system that the world, and in the case of the government, the country, is dependent on.

It's a pretty major indictment of the US in general, and the Republic party specifically, that a single man can unleash his deluded ideas with such consequence. I read someone who compared it to Stalin (and Mao's) rejection of mainstream genetic science in favour of basing their agricultural programs on the misguided and ill-founded pseudoscience of Lysenko, resulting in massive famines for their populations.

Well, with it being the obese capital of the world, a famine wouldn't do much harm

Would love this to be the attitude across the world.. some gamble by Trump

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Trump's threats with a backhand:

"So, you voted to build a wall.

Well,  dear Americans, even if geography isn't your strong suit—since you  consider America a country rather than a continent—you should know that  beyond that wall, there are 7 billion people.

And  since the word 'people' might not resonate with you, let's call them  'consumers.'
These 7 billion consumers can switch from iPhones to  Samsung or Huawei in less than two days.
They can swap Levi's for Zara or Massimo Dutti and, within six months, replace Ford and Chevrolet with Toyota, KIA, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Renault, or  BMW—brands that often outperform in quality.

They can cancel Direct TV, and though they might not want to, they can stop watching Hollywood films in favour of higher-quality productions from Latin America or Europe, which offer richer narratives and better cinematography.

Believe it or not, people can skip Disney and instead visit the Xcaret resort in Cancun, or explore destinations in Mexico, Canada, South America, and  Europe.
Even in Mexico, you'll find better hamburgers than McDonald's, with superior nutritional value.

Have  you ever seen pyramids in the U.S.?
Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Sudan all have ancient wonders—none of them in the U.S.
If they did, Trump would probably have bought and sold them by now.

We know that Nike isn't the only sneaker brand—there's Adidas, and even Mexican brands like Panam.
We understand the economy more than you think.

And we also know that if these 7 billion consumers stop buying American products, unemployment will rise, and your economy—trapped within its self-imposed wall—will crumble to the point where you'll beg us to tear  it down.

We didn't want to do this, but... You wanted a wall?
Well, you got one."

Her approval ratings to historical levels, with one recent poll putting her support at 85 percent!

And this is just the beginning of the foreign fallout coming our way, compliments of our Führer.

As tensions continue to rise, and the world watches closely, and many fear that we are on the brink of a crisis that could reshape global politics for years to come.

Thanks again, MAGATS! You own this and what is to come!

It's refreshing to see a woman bitchslap Trump!
Well done!

"Trump's tariff calculation is just one example of the unpriceable chaos that markets find themselves in." Financial Times.
Expect prices to fall further next week. Trump is already losing support. Unnecessary falls in 401k accounts will further damage support.

And Trumps mates with all the money will be there to buy them at the bottom and make billions.
