Is Valencia fit to lace Ronaldo's boots ?

Whenver a star player leaves (only Gerrard and Torres would be a bigger loss to Pool) you have to fill that void as well as possible, it has happened this way for years, Ian Rush left they filled the gap with Aldridge.

Aquilani is a very good player it is how he adapts to the demans of England that will be important.
Short Answer:yes. Valencia was wanted by real madrid long before he went to wigan. A ronaldo-esque player who has been stifled by players of titus bramble's stature and now has a chance to shine. Aqualini is an expensive impact player and will not be fit to fill alonso's boots

I can see your insightful contributions will keep us all interested in the season ahead.
i sense a hint of sarcasm....
Do you think Usain Bolt could replace Thomas Walsh?

Hound

A 2-0 win over Lyn, (bottom of the Norwegian top division). Voronin nodding home after good work by Babel close to half time. Then on the hour mark a great (Alonso-like!) crossfield ball by Mascherano, Dossena took it down and crossed it and Ngog finished it well.

Not many overly impressive or overly bad. Lucas doing fine in midfield. Degen showed he'll be better right winger than right back (well he couldnt be any worse). Young Kelly was the one to really shine, particularly when he went right back in the 2nd half - may well put him ahead of Degen and Darby as back up right back..

Goats Do Shave

I don't understand why Liverpoo lnever got Barry?

They seemed to baulk at the asking price for a proven player, to pay over the odds for this unproven Italian guy (Who could turn out to be a good signing!).

Smacks of desperation.... especially as Rafa new about Alonso leaving from May...

No doubt Barry was first choice. But last year Parry wouldnt go above a certain figure, unless Alonso could be sold. Nobody made a decent bid for Alonso and Villa wouldnt reduce their asking price => no deal. This year City were very quick off the blocks and got the deal done. Liverpool made a late effort but by that stage the deal was almost done and Barry hadnt forgotten the way Liverpool (Parry) dicked him about last year.

This signing is hardly desperation. Liverpool have been working on the Aqualini deal for weeks, if not months. Rafa didnt know Alonso was leaving, he only knew that Alonso would be leaving if somebody was prepared to pay £30m. If Real had not met the asking price, Alonso would not have been sold and Liverpool would not have concluded the Aqualini deal. As for unproven, over the last year the guy had become a regular figure in the Italian midfield, until he got injured. £20m is a fair price for a 25 year old Italian international midfielder. Of course, as with any foreigner, there's always a gamble as to how they'll adapt to English football. And missing pre-season due to injury is a long way from the ideal start. Liverpool may well buy again to provide additional cover before the season starts.

Alonso made his feelings known at the end of the season and was never going to leave until the clause for the pay off expired and he submitted a written request. Also as Hound says unless someone came up with the right money he was going nowhere.  I don't know much about the Italian and will hold my counsel until he has a few games.  Dossena was an Italian international when he arrived.

On the Dossena thing, he will not be leaving now I reckon with the new lad in town.  He will be kept as a babysitter for the first year at least until Aquilani settles.  He may still be a decent enough option and with Aurelio out and Riera injured last night the left sided options are lessening by the week.

I have to agree with Hound on Kelly, what I saw of the game yesterday he looked comfortable albeit against very poor opposition.  Also Plessis could provide cover for the centre backs and may be more suited to there than MF.

Right,

What about this 689908 character?

Clearly his name suggests he is a UTD fan yet has posted mostly in the Liverpool thread since he joined. Also a mention already about Torres looking feminine.

EC Unique anyone?

He's certainly another poster that's for sure.

Ah Bugger. You got me there  :D :D ::)  I'm just not cute enough for the wise old slievegullion :D

1 cap, as a sub in a friendly, I believe.

Though since he's been with Liverpool he's added quite a few more!

With Aurelio being injured, I don't think we can afford to let him go. And as you say, its probably a good idea to have him around to help Aquaman settle faster. In any event I actually thought Dossena improved a lot towards the end of the season, although moreso when he played left midfield rather than left back.

What is the craic with Riera? Did not look good getting carried off! Liverpool can not afford to lose him now!!

It didnt look good alright, though Benitez said initial indications are its just a twisted ankle and he'll be ok.

Still plenty of options on the left with Benny and Babel, and even Dossena.

Hmmmm, yeah on second thoughts he doesn't use enough stupid smiley faces.

full back

He is right about Torres, but it does look like a WUM

Aquilani broke his ankle a few months back?
Will the medical go ok?

as was jermain pennannt according to the press, they also signed julian faubert on loan.

i havent saw much of aquilani i will admit and his injuries do slightly worry me but if rafa has forked out 20 mill for him he obv sees something in him.  he appears to get into the box more so hoping he can contribute a few more goals from that sector, though obv going miss alonsos range of passing.   lets not judge him before we have saw him play regularly in english league.  you seem to be another tinted glassess supporter..

I was watching a programme the other nite of LFCtv (it's great that it is free ;D)  and they were showing the best signings of the 80's.  It was amazing and all that to see Barnes, Rush and all in their pomp.  The thing that struck me though was how good Beardo was.  I know he was fantastic but time has blurred things a small bit.  Anyway, where I am going is that when I clicked onto the youtube of Pacheo's goal I went into a few of the other clips against him.  His style and stature really reminded me of how Beardsley played.  Quick feet, clever eye and could take his goal.  I reckon that he needs a lot of game time this year against the lower level teams and in the cup ties.  I think if he can adjust to the pace of the game he is a real star in the making.

That is crazy, I was thinking of Beardsley this morning (not like that), he was a great player to watch, very skilful and tricky.  United let him go too which is always nice!
