Complete legend. In a day when footballers tend to show little passion for their clubs he really loved the shirt. I remember dreading seeing him named as a right back as I didn't think he offered enough going forward. Then his move to centre half and the rest as they say is history. Was as solid as a rock for many years. Was unlucky to be an English centre half along side Rio and Terry.

Pfft. Boyhood Blueshite.

I kid, I kid because I love. It was great to see a player for whom playing was always a source of joy rather than a chore. If his performances on ITV during Euro 2012 was anything to go by, we'll see a lot of him in retirement.

Sorry to hear this, but will go down as a true Liverppol legend.

From what I've heard and read he is very knowledgeable about the game so hope it stays on within a coaching role.

It wasn't til the season he played left back did hen really come to the fore. I remember going to a Liverpool Linfield match in the mid 90's. Not sure if it was his debut but he was truly awful that day and to think he would've played over 700 times for Liverpool was insane.

Hope he gets the send off he deserves

He lost a bit the last few years - but he's rightfully up there in terms of club legends and one of the best defenders the Premier League has seen.

Wore his heart on his sleeve and the ultimate club man.

Lost a bit alright . Tony Fearon could turn faster than him.

Always liked him. If only more PL players had his attitude to their club. A dying breed.

Whatever about his ability level he gave everything he had for the shirt. Legend of a player.   I reckon that he is going to move into a coaching role in the club,  it's not like they don't need a defensive Coach or anything!

He never lost it, didn't have it in the first place but the head was always away ahead of everything else.

Hard to believe he started as a centre midfielder but never looked the part there. Moved back and probably made the breakthrough as a left back and had his first real run in the team there. Moved very comfortably into CB.

BC1 - You and him would have had a good tussle on the edge of the square  ;D

Definitely cut from the one cloth!  I wonder was there any assurance to him about a coaching role if he retired as it's not like him when he is playing well.

Might have been here but someone suggested that with his current run in the team, it may have opened his eyes to what is required to stay at that level. One thing about him was his honesty and he is likely been honest with himself and the club, he not be the sort to sit on the bench on a big contract. Also, i don't think he'd play unless he felt he was able to perform to the highest level.

I'd imagine he will take a year to rest, get himself focused and do his badges. Very likely to do this at the club in part but I would imagine he will look to travel into to clubs and countries and broaden his horizon as such, learn the ropes outside Liverpool, like Rodgers did.

Maybe him and Gary Neville will have their own show on Sky Sports, that would be interesting!

Think he was one of those players no matter which club you supported you had time for him.

Carra would have lost more teeth in that one match than a career against Shearer, John Hartson, Chris Sutton or Floyd hasselbaink !!

Carra had a better timing though!

Great to see a player stick with his club like he did.

I think a lot of people vastly underrate Jamie Carragher, for year he and big Sammy carried that defense and he was plugged in all over the place to help them out.

Carragher is not only a Liverpool legend, he is a premier league legend, he was a man that got every ounce out of his God given talent, he  is a model professional and he loved the game, and moreso, the club he served with distinction.

As someone said earlier, him and red nev would be some craic on a panel, throw in Souness and you would have a top notch panel to rival rte's.
Armagh, the one true love of a mans life.

All the best to Carra - absolute legend and definitely my favourite ever player in almost 20 years watching the reds!

Although not always in the team this season, we have seen recently what he gives to the team. Still got plenty to contribute between now and the end of the season.

Real pity that Liverpool couldn't secure that PL title that he so craved. Surely must go down as one of the greatest players never to win a Premier League medal.
