Evans goes in side footed and gets the ball. Shelvey goes in studs up and gets Evans up the inside of the leg.

Still harsh enough red though but if you go in like that a red is always possible.

United were very lucky yesterday and Liverpool have been unlucky in the league so far.

When will they get the first win? Away to Norwich City next then Stoke City at home. Both should be winnable.

United have been getting away with it for years,I don't know why I'm even surprised when it happens, yesterday was as bad as I have seen in a long long time though.
The awarding of the peno beggers believe imo.
Even Gary Neville in fairness to him admitted the majority of the refs calls yesterday were very unfair to Liverpool.

Anyway it's time to move on,we got nothing from the game yesterday and as Bingo said the run of hard fixtures is over for the moment so really the league starts now.
It's plain to see the system is starting to work and it was a pleasure to watch Liverpool at times yesterday.

Onwards and upwards.

I think Stoke will be hard to work this year, they'll want to prevent the Liverpool passing game and go the aerial route and I'm not so sure Liverpool have the defenders to work with 5 or more 6 footers in the box every set play.

Evans was lunging but his foot was in the vague direction of the ball, Shelvey followed through and went up Evans' leg with the studs, this was always going land him in bother.

Not a fan of Evan but think he could have got yellow but JJS was a def red

If one gets red so does the other. Evans had both feet off the ground studs up. Shelvey actually only went in with one foot up. His other foot was off to the side.

Getting the ball is immaterial if you go in with two feet up in the air. Numerous players were sent off last season for tackles like that despite getting the ball first. Kompany in fact got sent off for a tackle like that last season (against United also funnily enough) and he won the ball clean as a whistle but still got the line.

Side footed? Evans went in with two feet, and his studs straight on. Both lads were reckless.

Direction of the ball on the tackle on Suarez made the refs mind up but I think it was a peno, with the benefit of a replay which the ref didn't. No doubt his reputation will always rule a 50/50 against him.

That's two games in a row now that Suarez should have been awarded a penalty. Should have had one at Sunderland last week as well. No doubt the refs now are just presuming that he's diving. Even when he's been fouled.

The penalty was clear as day - Johnson in his haste to get back pushed valencia in the back as he was about to shoot...Why did Johnson not appeal to the referee at his decision to award the penalty whenever he had spent the majority of the rest of the game screaming in the referees face over every throw-in, corner, free kick and offside?...

I think Liverpool fans are getting a bit mixed up...their frustration at not getting something out of a game they deserved to win is manifesting itself as anger towards a referee who got all of the big calls correct (sending off of shelvey/ decision not to award penalty to suarez/ decision to give penalty to valencia)...That Utd happened to be on the right side of all of these marginal calls was no fault of the referees and was more about getting utd the rub-of-the-green than any refereeing bias...

What was JohnJoe Shelvey's problem with Ferguson as he left the pitch?...you could lip-read him saying 'Thats your fault'...thought that was pretty comical!!

absolute rubbish.
therew as no contact watso ever for the penalty, and if he was going to send shelvey off then Evans has to go too.
the liverpool penalty shout was 50-50, sometimes you get them, sometimes you dont, it was a tough one to call in real time

And the reason Johnson didn't protest was because Reina poleaxed him, you could see it in the replay. Add to the fact he'd just sprinted back 40 yards after also breaking up his own player, you can understand he might not have been keyed up to give the ref a tongue trashing. For me, from the replay, there was no contact before Valencia went over.

As for Shelvey and Evans, the should both have got red, but more likely yellow in my opinion, as they both went in recklessly.

Halsey gave me the impression of a guy who was determined not to let the occasion and the setting get the better of him, to such an extent he went to far in the opposite direction.

I would say there are reasons to be hopeful from the performanace but (a) yet again the team raised it's performance for a bigger side, can they do that for Norwich? and (b) the injuries l, with Kelly and Agger out, are taking their toll. If anything were to happen to Suarez or Borini the side would be left without any recognisable front line striker. Add to that the fact that young Sterling can't be asked to play every game, and the folly of the last transfer window is really coming home to roost.

While the performance was very good, its a huge body blow to lose the game due to the incompetence of the ref. Then injury added to insult with Agger and Kelly. Very important that they get over it and put in another proper performance in the next league match. Pressure will build substantially each time a league game isnt won with the "easy" run coming up.

I'm a big fan of Kelly and disappointed for him personally, but we shouldnt miss him hugely as we have Enrique, Robinson, Flanagan, Wisdom, Downing who can all fill in. Although I'd nearly put Enrique last in that list!!

Agger's a massive loss, but now's the time for Big Seb to step up.

Borini might be out for a couple of weeks, but that might not be any harm. He's only 21, still raw, and shouldnt be playing every league game anyway.

Enrique was in for a scan this morning too, according to his twitter anyway, so may not be available. In some senses it's no big loss but the squad is just another body thinner. As for Downing at left back? This is a guy who not only never made a tackle in his career with Liverpool thus far, but has astutely avoided being tackled too, he won't even draw a free. When the club paid Villa 20 million for him they should have paid an extra 2 to get them to throw in his heart as well - he's the Tinman.

Its unreal how losing yesterdays game is now all attributed to the referee, how he got every call wrong and it wasn't Liverpools fault.  The Suarez penalty incident was not given, and rightly so.  Evans didn't nearly rip another players leg open and Valencia was clearly fouled after being clipped in the heel by Johnson followed by a lunge in the back.  The table has a lovely look to it already.

Evans was back on his feet quickly after the card was shown, maybe it was a Mersey Miracle.
I'm gonna show you as gently as I can how much you don't know.
