Another top class signing for Liverpool ;)
Staunton set for Liverpool role
Soccer: Former Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton is on the verge of taking up a coaching position at a Premier League club, believed to be Liverpool.

Speaking at a press conference in his native Dundalk yesterday to promote a Dundalk Legends v Liverpool Legends fundraising game at Oriel Park on July 23rd, the 102 time capped former defender said a deal was all but agreed for him take up a "football position" at a top-flight outfit.

That led to suggestions that a return to his former club Liverpool was on the cards. Staunton remained tight-lipped about his destination although he did say the job was with a club that is currently on its pre-season tour. Liverpool are currently on a jaunt of Asia.

"I can't speak to the club at the minute because they are on their pre-season tour," said Staunton. "When they come back, we will discuss it further but it's more or less done and dusted. Since the Ireland job, I've been involved at the lower levels. It would be nice to get back into the Premiership."

I told you to come back with £20m and Kenny listened  :P, he seems on a one man crusade to inflate the price of every young British player though?

It was always the way of the premiership, I'm sure Kenny isn't arsed about the fees, he's not paying it personally
Bit of a moot point re the money side of things as it effectively comes out of the club coffers.  Don't get me wrong I was a big fan of Downing but I think £20m is a lot of cash, the one thing he does give a team is balance on the left which is hard to find these days.

I was more commenting on your Kenny crusade comment, I'd guess he is leaving that to the club and has already shown with Wickham that he and the club will have a limit on what they spend on players, they obviously have priority signings and know the value of them. Plus i'm sure there will be outgoings that will soften the blow in terms of wages and fees.

Its a big fee alright but will hopefully be justified. If LFC get back in CL, it will be money well spent.

Interesting you mention Wickham, I would have paid the £9m for him if I was Kenny, the lad is going to be worth a lot more in a few years.

Doogie Browser seems on a one man crusade to inflate the price of every young British player.  ;)

I'd say Wickham was a risk signing and if he is working on a budget, he had it earmarked for elsewhere eg if he bought Wickham at that price, he won't have been able to go 20m for Downing. Plus he has already spent 57m on two strikers.

Sure isn't it a great problem to be having! For long enough Liverpool were known as a one man team so I for one am delighted we now have proper depth to the squad.
It's a long season and there will be injuries, suspensions, players losing form etc so it's great there is real quality to call on now.

Exactly! As I said a few pages back, in order to compete and challenge the top teams we need to have a good squad, with players on the bench equal to those on the pitch. UTD and Chelsea have shown this in the last ten years! Liverpool have not had the luxury to drop a best XI player to the bench for a game a la fergie etc and bring in someone who will do just as well. Great situation to be in. Although get poulsen out please!

Has there been any confirnation of the fee apart from Skysports 'believing' it is £20m?  They had the Henderson deal at 20m when in truth it was less and also the Adam deal at 10m originally. I would be surprised if we found out the actual fee which imo means it was less than 20m as Alex Dogleash would not want to be seen as being short changed. Wouldn't look good with the fans in his battle to win them over.

I had forgotten about maxi, mayybe he would do the role of Cole/Raul.  Either way it is good to have strong competition.

Me too. Looks a great prospect and I think Sunderland have nipped in well there!

Sky and the papers will often inflate the fee to its absolute maximum because it makes for better headlines. More often the full transfer fee being paid is dependant on a number of targets and clauses being reached and they often aren't.

Wickham could be very good but he was only alright in the championship last season (granted he's still very young). Considering the big clubs are not shy in hoovering up young English talent you'd wonder why only Liverpool expressed any interest in him. I think Harry said he was interested alright but he says that about every footballer under the sun.

He is a gangster, look how he has driven up Modric's price, he knows he will be sold and has made the club a fortune (and possibly himself  :o)

Young had only 1 year left on his contract, Downing had 2.  Downing was also Villa's player of the year

EagleLord

Downing has had more crosses into penalty areas in the premiership in the last 3 years than any other player. And has played on average 34 games in league each year in the prem. Those are the stats apparently, looks like Liverpool did their homework and signed the most consistant and reliable player available to them.
