1990 World Cup - Apart form the Ireland matches, the thing that stands out for me was Cameroon & Roger Milla. So any of their games, maybe the match v England - QF, think it was 3-2 - great game.

Good shout on the Cameroon England game.  Most exciting game in what was overall a fairly dull tournament (Ireland games aside). Remember being gutted when Lineker scored two pens to come from behind and win.  Think Milla had to go of if that game, courtesy of that halyon Mark Wright.

Not like Spurs then...Good man!
Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal 1989 for me...

Best match you have watched Pat, But can't remember the score  ??? ;)

If only that was the score.............

Should have been, remember Aldridge missing a great chance  ;D .  That gave me great pleasure, although he was playing for Ireland at the time I always thought he was a real p***k

Dont think anyone has mentioned England vs Argentina in 86.
Only vaguely remember watching it myself (I was 6), so not even sure if it was a classic game, but it did contain one of the greatest goals ever, and it still brings joy to most of the world bar england to hear them bleating on about the handball.

The second goal wasn't bad either!  :P

Most of the Liverpool matches mentioned, especially the 2005 CL and the "Hillsborough" FA Cup Final in 1989. Recall a great chest down and volley from Stuart McCall and a couple of Rushie specials in extra time. Suppose it was sweet after Hillsborough and getting turned over by future Norn Iron manager Lawrie Sanchez the year before!

Michael Owen's late double v Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup Final was a good one too.

Plenty of great moments of brilliance where I can't remember much about the match - Roberto Carlos' curler in Le Tournois, Marco Van Basten's volley in 1988, Maradona v England...

Derry City v Finn Harps relegation/promotion play off in 2003 had it all in terms of drama and derby passion, Derry won 2-1 AET.  Derry legend Liam Coyle scored winner in extra time in his last game, Harps were the better team though!

England v Argentina in 1998 (the Michael Owen game) was a great match as well.

Arsenal vs United a few seasons ago when viera and neville/keane had the spat int he tunnel before hand.
Stoked the whole game up to boiling point before kick off even!

The two Mersyside derby Finals, particularly were special for men for different reasons too.  The 1986 was an unreal experience,  I love seeing Rushie's goal that knocks the corner camera over in the net.  Also brucie's save from Graeme Sharp's header will always be the best save I have ever seen in a live game.  I was a budding goalie at the time and I tried that backwards jump many times in teh playground, generally resulting in me landing in a painful heap in the back of the net!!!  The fact that Liverpool won the double was the icing on the cake.  I still can see King kenny winning the League in Stamford Bridge ;D

The "Hillsborough" Final was very eerie, but I don't think I have ever witnessed a game so charged with raw emotion ever.  The game itself lived up to that emotion, McCall's volley and Rushie coming off the bench to win it.

The 2005 CL was special also.  I actually took BC junior to bed at half time and both of us were devastated.  He was only six but he was a true fan at that stage.  I read him The Giraffe and Pelly and Me and both of us fell asleep.  I woke up just as Liverpool had equalised.  I didn't know whether I should waken him or not, Mrs BC would have been displeased if I had so I left him sleeping.  The excitement was unbelievable.

The Newcastle games, particularly the 1996 one were great.  Watched that one in the disco in Renshaw's, the crowd was so big they had to open the whole place.

Internationally, lots of great games, but one that always sticks with me is the 1986 WC quarter final, France v Brazil.  the two best footballing teams I ever saw playing a fantastic game.

At half time in the Liverpool v Milan final I backed Liverpool to win 4-3, cheeky £5 at 500/1 i think it was....close!

The 1986 and 1989 FA Cup finals were the stuff of nitemares   Ian Rushe was the bane of blue men for years. The 4-4 draw was good tho  ;) I can still see King Kenny jumping ship before the replay  :P

Croí na hÉireann

Best games I was at were:

Liverpool 0 - 2 Celtic
France 0 - 0 Ireland

Unreal atmospheres...
Westmeath - Home of the Christy Ring Cup...

France - West Germany '82 semi-final
France v Brazil '86 1/4 final

May be nostalgia but World Cups after 1986 never seemed to have the same drama or quality.

Man Utd v Barcelona Old Trafford 1984
Liverpool v Man Utd (1994?) 3-3 when Utd went 3 up. Ferguson went mental at Schmeichel at half-time.

Agree with that. Although there were a few good games in US 94.
The days of the unpredictable genius in international football came to an end round the mid 90's
Teams became more structured and managers had no place for the likes of Hagi and Stoichkov.
A shame really..

Well the great United European Cup victory in 1999 hasn't been mentioned yet so I'll post it. Some great lines in the commentary from Clive Tyldsley (sp)

Before the corner for the first United goal - 'can United score? They ALWAYS score.'

After Sheringham's equaliser - 'name on the trophy'

And then some pure jingoism, after looking at the face on Lothar Matthaus - 'how must Lothar Matthaus be feeling? Well, with the greatest of respect, who cares?'

And Ferguson trying to push in to lift the cup with Schmeichel is hilarrious, Schmeichel is having none of it! Pity Roy the Boy couldn't play though
