Anyone see the front page of the Fermanagh Herald today? Depressing stuff, local DUP councillor basically glad to see fermanagh lose

Hardy

Obviously not a fan of defensive football.

Possibly not! Now you mention it, he didn't say he was glad to see Armagh win either......

Just seen this. As an absolutely gutted Fermanagh fan, this was the last thing I wanted to read.

I can't completely discount what she is saying, but I was through Enniskillen, 'skea and Tempo at the weekend and seen one tricolour. It was in 'Skea just beyond the hotel, and we commented at the time about it being up.

Now while I don't think it should have been up in these circumstances, they are bitter spiteful ol gits with the craic they have went spouting off about

ziggysego

I grin and bear with when I see Union Flags flying from everything over the summer months. Even months later when some aren't taken down and they become tattered with the elements. I grin and bear it. However Arlene's comments make me wonder why!  :(

There was quite a bit made of cross community support for the Fermanagh team. Everyone knows someone whos a prod and went to the game, and I seen a few prods being practically chatted up by everyone who wanted to show their delight that they were there. But what I've realised is that they are in the massive majority, and went mainly because all they lived in very predominantly catholic areas, and all their friends were catholic and going.

I play a bit of soccer for a predominantly protestant team. They be chatting away about the 12th and all (prob in badness), but I couldn't care less, and join in, usually with some comment about some of the flute-playing women in the photos. But when I mentioned the game to any of them, they didnt want to know - theres zero chance of any of them boys ever going to a gaelic game. I live right beside the border, in a rural community. Theres a few prods around, but theres a good relationship between everyone; that is we help them out during the year, they say hello to us all year round except in july; i.e the usual. But the young lad of one of the neighbours had put up a fermanagh flag, and green and white bunting, across his driveway. The other night, the flags were pulled down and burnt on the road.

People can say theres always a minority, etc, but the point I'm making is that it isn't a minority; those boys i play soccer with would be even more fenian friendly than most prods, and its clear they hate the GAA. I've never seen any problems like this before in my area, yet they're burning Fermanagh flags. So f**k them. Its not the tricolours they have a problem with, its the GAA. So hopefully after the Fermanagh flags do come down, there'll be tricolours hung for the rest of the year.

Yes I Would

It stems from decades of suspicion and fear of all things Irish. Will take another generation before this is erased. Some of them dont like to be seen to be showing an interest. Its against what many of them were taught and reared on.

Work with a few myself and get on well with them but when we talk about GAA matches and the normal football banter, they deliberately make a point of showing disinterest.
Some of them i suspect do watch the odd game and read the papers but dont like to admit to it, rather asking same old questions, who is playing?? where is it on??, when they know fine rightly who is playing!!
