Have a friend who tried to installed windows xp on top of an existing operating system 2000 or 98 - now it asks for authentication key - obviously it was a hooky copy - can the pc be reverted to the original operating system?

Only with the original copy of the 98/2000 copy and it will wipe the xp install so it wont revert to the old system but it will be a fresh install of 98/2000.

I'd be surprised if an Windows 2000 or 98 machine would be able to run XP properly. Must have been a well specked machine for the time, as it take 256 MB RAM just to run the XP OS efficiently, before you even start to think about internet security or other programmes.

You could search on emule or some other file sharing application for a windows xp crack -  a file that will give you a new serial number and prevent windows from being required to be authenticated. Of course this is totally illegal, but it is an option you might want to consider.
