As many steps as you want!

'Showing' the ball never seems to get blown for at all by the ref. It's something forwards are doing in every match but yet I can't remeber the last time I've seen a free given for it.

Steps is a very frustrating one, so many players are getting away with, particularly on big occassions (ie. Dublins goal in the AI final). Are refs afraid to make these calls in big games?

"Showing the ball" is not a foul. It's one of the skills of the game in sending an opponent the wrong way or "selling a dummy", as it was called when I was playing. Rather than never being blown, I've often seen it blown and it shouldn't be. What's not allowed is transferring the ball from one hand to the other and back again.

If the steps rule was implemented strictly you'd have about half the pulling and dragging fouls eradicated .
If I got a Fiver for everytime I heard some supporter shout "showing the ball ref" I'd be well off now.
It seems to be mainly Galway bucks that shout this for some reason.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Down teams over the years have been masters of getting away with over-carrying. There were none better at it than the likes of M Linden and the current manager, James; watch out tomorrow for Danny Hughes at it!
Tyrone's Penrose is good at it as well.

Another call not given for steps again today. Dublins first goal scorer took around 9 steps without so much as a thought of a hop or a solo but yet the goal stands. Referees need to man up and call the foul, even if it is a dub shooting into the hill
