Stormont spent nearly half a mill on the report and then ignored it. Shocking waste of taxpayer money.  Hospitality Ulster sponsoring every DUP dinner going has paid off nicely.

That's trauma as a hangover from the Troubles. It's very sad.

I know alot of one's who killed themselves and it had nothing to do with the troubles.

I'd say a lot of suicides/mental health issues today are stemming from the troubles and the basket case of the north in general, the shitty mental health services, poverty, intergenerational trauma, crime, drugs etc etc.  It's all linked.

It's nonsense. To best of my knowledge it's the biggest killer of men under 50 in many countries ROI included. We can't blame everything on the troubles.

Very true. It's a huge issue worldwide.

This isn't meant to sound crass, but what would be a bigger killer of under 50s?

Most men that age rarely die from physical illnesses, and once those are taken out of the picture, suicide becomes the leading cause. Many men also struggle silently with mental health, making crises more dangerous

Milltown Row2

Heart, cancers have risen by 80% in last 30 years, accidents, congenital..

Loads, but north has the most I think in Uk and Ireland

Yeah that's a great point, obviously no matter the cause of death for under 50's be it an accident, or in the rarer cancer/underlying heart issue it's always tragic.

The Troubles. Probably the reason we have so many DLA cars too.

Or "accidents" in Gough barracks and Castlereagh.

Normally accidents are the biggest killer below 50.

https://www.nisra.gov.uk/news/northern-ireland-suicide-statistics-2023#:~:text=The%20suicide%20rate%20%28age-standardised%29%20in%20Northern%20Ireland%20was,14.3%20per%20100%2C000%20in%20both%202018%20and%202021.
The percentage of suicides in 2023 within Northern Ireland's most deprived areas (28.5 per cent) was over twice that of the least deprived areas (13.1 per cent).

Next stop 50 for me, and was chatting a college friend recently,  he'd be far better than me for maintaining contact with people.  He floored me with a list of people from college that I either knew well enough or casually back in the day that are dead.  12, it just seems a high proportion from our circle,  and others I knew myself from then would make nigh on 20.  One third suicide, one car accident,  one third cancer, and the remainder/ almost a third, heart or aneurysm sudden deaths.  It just feels like a high proportion not to make it to 50.
Past pupils are always a tough one to take.  Unfortunately there's around the 25 mark again,  but here suicide accounts for give or take 80%, with one drowning accident, a couple with cancer, and another few that had long-term health complications.  You'd tend to think of them one at a time as they'd arise, but when you put them together, it's sobering.

Quick edit: between both sets, it's running at 85% male mortality,  with all suicides bar one male.

Tony Baloney

I have been at only 2 funerals this year, thankfully. Both suicide by hanging (u50s men). One unsurprisingly due to long term mental health issues and the other totally out of the blue to even the closest family.
