Lined their own and their associates / family member pockets by drawing down salaries / expenses and benefits.  The tragic thing is there are hundreds of people who lost their lives and a small number who gave their lives to further what they perceived to be a relevant agenda at that time in history.  It all seems a complete waste, I would imagine everyone up on the hill is no more interested in a UI as in a 32 county state as for a lot of them the gravy train would come to an almighty halt.

Absolutely agree, know lots of "hardline" shinners in well paid community roles doing absolutely nothing. They would have a heart attack if there was a UI, they would need to get a job actually doing something. The whole gravy train from the hill and handouts to these made up community roles is soul destroying, what is equally depressing is they just get voted in again and again by a society all sides have failed for their communities and society as a whole.

As much as I agree with a lot of what has been said about the civil service, is this as big a story as it seems?
If they were missing oversight, then to implement the oversight there will be additional cost and salaries, which narrows the gap to the money they have spent without that oversight.
It could actually finish up costing more than what has been spent here.

Also, removing tonsils is a problem? Surely that's only done when needed....I know kids who've been waiting years to get their tonsils out and really need it done.

Why not both? He used the office to enrich himself and that is how he will be remembered. But he did more for the arts and culture than any other Taoiseach. Stopped the destruction of the Merrion Street area. Introduced loads of free stuff for the old and disabled. Stood up to Thatcher. Set up the IFSC. Saved the country billions by issuing bonds in deutsch marks. Loads more.

You don't stay at the top as long as he did without keeping people onside.
