Yeah at 9.30. They had open cheque book rounding up County players.

Niblock was hard  to listen to today. Too hysterical . Like a man who had too many  red bulls in him

Marty on RTE was  more  calmer . Was like watching a  totally different match.

No male commentators at this camogie match..

Very disappointing
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Marty and calm in the same sentence?

It's ironic as the joke 40 years ago was that American commentators got paid by the word, while the English hardly said anything.  Now I know that's not the Irish, however the GAA play by play guys sound like Americans on steroids, while the colour commentators really are the Cliche Kings.

I'm not really complaining - plus I haven't watched North American sports this century so ours may be just as excitable now - but I am curious, has RTE sportscasting always been so "over the top"?

Gael-in-exile

I think the BBC commentators for hurling try to give an over the top level of plaudit to every phase of the game.
Some of the analysts do this too.
It's like an attempt to give sound bites and a bit of a marketing level of speak to the game.

It's not for me. I much prefer those who talk a bit more naturally - and think actually when the game is good enough the natural commentary and analysis is miles above the slightly marketing targeted orchestrated versions.

Niblock is one of life's naturally enthusiastic people, he does get carried away, possibly having come through the bbc environment were for a long time the game got very little coverage he may feel (or been trained to view) he has to sell it all the time to a sceptical audience (either sitting at home or at Ormeau Avenue).

It's also sadly a trait of us all that we want bemused outsiders to understand the game, community, culture and history all in one go (we've all done it). Need to ease back on the tourist board stuff and let the game show itself.

I'd give him a lot of credit for being part of the improved coverage we now have.

Gael-in-exile

They definitely deserve the plaudits for the wider audience they have managed to get the games to resonate and appeal to.
The use of celebrities for the finals who are more familiar faces to BBC viewers outside the GAA fan is an excellent idea.

But I suppose I'm not a fan of the tourist board commentary/analysis, I believe it feels fake.
And Niblocks not the worst for it. It is in his nature to be overly enthusiastic sometimes so I give him a bye ball more than some others.

BBC deserve great credit for their refreshed program. The referee innovation is a good idea.

Particularly impressed with Sarah Mulkerrins, was no surprise checking her past of being a pro broadcaster. The "explaining for the English/new viewers" was tolerable enough, so long as it isn't always like that.

GAA+ is quite poor on that front, throwing ex and current players into fray results in awful clichéd analysis.

Much more interesting having older experienced heads IMHO. BBC are clearly now interested in providing a good program, and not an afterthought.

If only the GAA top brass put as much effort into promoting our game as theses 'celebs' and commentators etc.

GAA marketing is poor enough in my opinion.

They just need to ease up on the "new viewers" angle and let the game speak for itself.

Wouldn't agree about Gaa +, hurling anyway, their analysts are light years ahead of the RTE ones in my view. Richie Hogan is really insightful, he did it all but is able to articulate it as well.
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

GAA marketing is non existent.
You'd think they'd get the sponsors of the various competitions to lend them some of their marketing/promotion people.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

I've no issue with any commentators tbh, be it on BBC,GAA+, rte etc..turn on the game and just watch without giving whoever is calling a particular game a 2nd thought, maybe on my own
