When Louth went 2 points up against Meath with a minute to go, Ger Canning announced "only a goal can save Meath now".
You'd think someone would at least have had a word in his ear about 2 pointers in the next 20 seconds.

Was hard going for the Tyrone Dublin game with Padraig "if they get their running game going they'll be hard to stop" O'Hora and Dave "untold damage" McIntyre

McIntyre sounds like someone is holding a hot poker close to him. At vital moments, they press it against him.

Big difference between being the studio link with a few scripted questions and the commentator having to think on their feet.
Marty is the worst. Too much old Ireland cliches. I know that west Clare is a half a century behind...

Maloney is great but so is Canning, I was not a fan and his mistakes (getting names wrong) were irritating but when I look back on old games or clips I have to say he is a top commentator. I do recall one mistake where Beano McDonald broke his leg against Tyrone and Canning was suggesting it may be his knee while Rte were shwing replays of the leg obviously broken.

I also think a good co-commentator is important, for instance Michael Duignan in hurling really adds to it as he spots things going on the commentator is not aware of.

As for the Sunday Game panels nowadays....horrendous

Duignan can never be taken seriously because of his infatuation with Kilkenny during the Cody era.
He was drooling into the microphone at the sight of black and amber.
He hates Tipp and should not be allowed near the commentary box when we're playing.

The entire phenomenon of getting players, some of who still play, into punditry is a complete disaster.

I'd love to go along to the interview day, must be a fair queue.
