Champion The Wonder Horse

Bradley an addition.
Good to have mcgrogan back.
Two positives.

Ben Mc Carron was absolutely shocking today he's had more than enough chances and has showed nothing. Thought Baker really struggles when he actually has the ball. Bradley look steady and strong when needed and the experience will help him. I think forward line really miss Niall Loughlin. Toner works his heart out but size restricts him badly. Murray showed what we all know he has.

Wildweasel74

Galway a very big team, but we allowed them to kick away short kickouts when we had got on top of them at Midfield. This league we have to blood players for later in the championship. There are a few defenders to come bck but we need def a few forwards. We need more height as well.

Wildweasel74

Derry should started McAvoy on Walsh. He well Curtailed him in the 2nd half.

Baker did well in the second half but he should have been moved off Walsh at least 10/15 minutes sooner than he was

Brilliant 2nd half from Derry, woeful first half.
We could have won it, but given that first half when it seemed like we'd be hammered, a draw feels like a win.

Some match ups were obviously wrong, and it did take a while but atvleast management saw it and changed it.

Murray changed the dynamic of the game when he came in, but I'm not sure he's a starter. In the games he starts, he doesn't have the same impact so maybe we get more from him as a sub.
Interesting that Murphy wasnt on panel, is he injured?

I really don't see that Mcnicholl is bringing much more benefit to the team either.
For me, Lynch saves that goal and his kickouts are much better. He might not be as agile out the field, but still offers plenty from open play and in contesting kickouts. I feel he's been hard done by. Not sure where Mcnicholl as an option came from but I don't thinknits working.

Once again midfield is our real problem. In that first half we hardly won a kickout or break ball.  With these new rules that puts defence under real pressure, so I think it's unfair to single out the likes of Baker as being found out. In the 2nd half when we won the majority of kickouts and breaks, our defence was fine.
We need to sort out midfield and also work on a short kick option which we don't have. Galway have one and used it a  umber of times.

I think we are playing with a lack of confidence. Balls dropping into the keepers hands show that, being blocked too often, handling errors, turning back for an easy pass rather than continuing the run. Ethan doc particularly low on confidence I think.

All that said, we're not too far away.
Should have beat kerry, could have beat galway and tyrone was just too soon for us.
Starting to get injured players back will help too. Would be great to stay in div 1, but the Ulster first round is the priority.

McNicholl only works if he starts scoring points and other teams see him as a threat otherwise they bck of him.His kickouts are basic with too much of a hang time. This shot stopping, well he hasn't stopped one yet. But Derry problems to me are up front.

If we win more ball in the middle
8 section we will score more, who ever we have up front.
Cassidy had his best game in a while, if we can get consistency from Murray and Loughlin back then we have options. Add murphy into that too.

Ethan low on confidence? Did you not watch the Kerry game he was one of best players on the pitch.

Tallys comments after the game don't bode well for Lynch. Talking about how the new rules don't suit traditional goalkeepers. Neil McNicholl is a good player and is starting to play with more confidence. Very unlucky not to get a goal. Looked to be going in top corner from where I was standing before defender cleared it. But he's never going to be a better shot stopper or better at kickouts than Lynch. For that reason I'd have Lynch back in

Regarding the keeper kickouts.. it looks like it doesn't seem to matter as much this year.

Have a look at everyone of Shane Ryan's second half restarts against Dublin. Aside from two, all of them were hit to an identical spot. Zero variation and very little happening going short. Any keeper getting a short option away now is due to the forwards not doing their job of picking up a man.

According to one of the stats men on twitter Derry won 12/16 of their own and Galway won 11/21 of their own. So this idea that we hardly won a kick out or break ball is false.

The only reason that Galway had a short option is nothing to do with the keeper and everything to do with us either withdrawing / marking space / or being slack.

Derry won plenty of kickouts. We haven't the firepower of Galway. Baker was a mile of Walsh for all 3 of his scores. With McKeigue gone. the full bck line only been playing for Derry 2yrs. Bit more experience needed in there.

I think it very much will matter come the championship. It's still very much a phoney war out there at the minute but, as with every facet of the game, as we get closer to championship you will see more of what it's actually going to be like emerge. Niall Morgan in the last round of games had 6/16 at one stage apparently and continued to hoof it into a gale force wind, same with Kerry tonight, every team is doing the same, but if anyone thinks that's going to be the norm come championship then they are living in cuckoo land. The top teams will still look to create space and options for the shorter kickouts and build from the back, especially when the game is in the balance.

It's hard for shorter kickouts now. With the ball having to travel outside the semi circle.

Derry were 2nd top scorers in Division 1 last year and posted more scores than both Kerry and Galway. So have scores in the team. Conceding goals has cost them in league and championship last year. Last night second half the defence was much better. Need other results to fall their way to avoid relegation but I'd be happier this morning about our prospects than at half time yesterday.

I think Ethan isn't playing the way he was, quite a few handling errors, getting blocked, kicks dropping short. He's not breaking the tackle the way he would have done. Example, in the first half he was almost through on goal, another couple of steps and he was in and that's what we'd have seen from him in the past. I instead he stopped and played it back out.
He's  not playing badly, just not as well as he was in previous seasons, imo.

I think we're OK in the forward dept if we get the ball in quickly.

Marty Bradley played well enough last night and it's great to see mcgrogan back.
