I'd say talent ID is on a par with UUJ, few stories in the past of lads turning them down in favour of vocational path getting serious shit for their decision from the recruiting teachers

Omaghs m.o. now is to develop future Tyrone seniors while winning as much as possible for themselves in the process, the coaching ticket at the school is second to none and plays a huge part

Looks like they have the use of Healy Park now for their home games? As close as you'll get to an elite environment at this level all things considered

Quote from: 03,05,08 on December 17, 2024, 09:38:11 AMNoticed in the last couple of years omagh seem to have benefiting from good underage coming through from teams who would traditionally not have had great representation on schools/county set ups.
Fintona really bringing through a lot of talent through Omagh CBS. Had 6 players that played a part against Bressbrook including 3 of the Rannafast team, with one of them scoring 4 points of the bench. They are a club on the move, think they have 6 starters on the Rannafast team as well.
Beragh and Loughmacrory have also contributed quite a few players in recent years.

Can also add drumragh, glennelly and Drumquinn to that list.

Onthe40

Omagh also has a non academic entry path to the school
Dungannon don't have this... basically if you don't score highly in the transfer u aint going to the academy

Aaron Boone

One club who could/should provide more players to Omagh CBS is Omagh.

St Patrick's Armagh have this in recent years after an amalgamation with a local secondary. I don't think its a coincidence that Armagh seemed to be a lot more competitive in recent years, been to a couple of finals in recent years (close but no cigar)

Maghera always had that non-academic path as well didn't they. Academy will never go down that road I wouldn't think no matter how much they fall behind.

That's a good one about Fintona, absolutely flying that club. To be fair it was maybe years of underachieving I wouldn't call Fintona that small of a place when you look at some of the other clubs that were stuck in junior forever

Fintona made an intermediate and junior final in the early 2000's came 2nd in division 2 in around that time then had a massive fallout in the club and stayed in junior for 15 or so years. I think fintona similar to drumragh and benefiting from a lot of new builds in the area in the last ten years.

Don't think I was ever in Fintona.

Is it a mixed town?

100%, and I could only imagine how well theyd have done if this was the case with the likes of Andy Mallon, Duffy, Loughran etc years ago.

The draw back now though is that the talent from Lurgan is not choosing to go to Armagh anymore, for example Andy Murnin, Shane McPartlan... and instead going to St Ronan's only or Newry schools for grammar.

In my day in St Colmans , there were always a lot of lads from Lurgan.

The row about boys playing soccer? Never good to have turmoil in a club, seem to have taken a long term view and the hard work starting to bear fruit, seems to be plenty of hurling in Fintona too, they've really gone about it the right way

Onthe40

Fintona is a small town with a significant rural catchment outside of it, so its no shock they have decent youth and are now established at intermediate

Drumragh are pulling from Omagh town and again don't lack numbers at youth
I see they won a g3 title lately,,though if they are serious about competing at intermediate they probably need to go up a grade or 2 like Fintona have done at youth level

Drumragh minors finished joint 2nd in league 2 this year. Beat in play offs.
