So it is an offence to state that a candidate in a Gaeltacht constituency should speak Irish? Pádraic Pearse might have had a different view. At least the MEPs are demanding to speak Irish!
What?

Quote from: JollyGreenGiant on July 16, 2026, 12:01:22 PMThe rationale behind the Argentine invasion of the Falklands should give anybody pause for applauding it. A right wing military junta led by human rights abusers invaded for political and nationalist interests. They assumed nobody would oppose them (they didn't like people opposing them - as evidenced by the disappearance of thousands of opponents during the Dirty Wa).

It's not about territorial claims or rights, historic, perceived, inferred or otherwise.

It's about people looking any excuse to cheer against England. Very easy for people to look at things through the lens of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" without actually considering the nature of that "friend" or looking at the legitimacy of their cause.

Or it's about nationalists from the 6c defending British colonial endeavours

And what about countries claiming territory as far away as 7,000 miles away? Could that lead to conflict too?

All countries have a right to self governance, its no more Argentinean than it is British no matter the distance between them.. Let them sort out their own issues and carry out a referendum that way there is no conflicts

I've no doubt the Argentineans feel that this is their own land as it was Spain's before that so after gaining independence they feel they own it from that point.. But its a bit rich? Considering no one from Argentina lived there?

A full throated defence of British imperialism on a GAA board  by a guy from Belfast.

Some mental gymnastics to have a dig..

Its simple enough and I already made it easy enough for dumb people to understand.. No country should have a claim on any country that's not theirs.. So in my post where have I defended British imperialism?

Take your time to point it out...

Because the British colonial project was so successful of course the referendum went their way. Same as 1973...

You are making an equivalence between the claims, but geography disagrees

Are you neutral on the Falklands War?

Yes and no. A military junta distracting from domestic woes versus Thatcher distracting from domestic woes, let them both lose. But my overriding opinion is empire should end. Tbe British have no right to their colonial outposts

Quote from: JPGJOHNNYG on July 16, 2026, 08:06:30 AMinstead of enjoying the moment they want to try and wind up the English players and fans who by and large couldn't actually give a toss about the falklands

Well, I mean, the Malvinas are 7,000 miles from England. Just 300 miles from Argentina. And it's the Argentinians who feel they are getting the raw deal. So they're going to care more, aren't they?

But let's not pretend the English don't care. I don't think I saw one news bulletin/preview of the game in the last few days where the english media were not referencing the political/historical significance of the fixture.

So I'll not get annoyed as you appear to be for the "two world wars and one world cup, England f**ked your country up" crew who have just been so terribly offended by a banner!
.

99.8% of the Falklands voted to remain British in the 2013 referendum.
Just 3 people voted No.
Some people seem to be all for self determination when it comes to the 6 counties, but not the Falklands, no. That's different.
Any talk of Argentina having a claim to them because they are only 300 mile away is just silly.
Imagine the row on here if England had won and the players danced on the pitch with a banner saying "The Falklands are British". Lol.
That said anyone in England calling for visas being revoked over the issue is insane.
Unionists are a majority in the 6, suck it up Padraig...

Tuchel played that card v Mexico. The Argentinians couldn't believe their luck that he did the same again. At any level the analysts are analysing. At a WC semi final....

Quote from: westbound on July 14, 2026, 12:48:25 PMdid Cawley actually make ANY mistake??

The 3 big disputed calls
- Penalty? Many people think it was a penalty, many people think it wasn't.  Therefore, it's hard to say he definitely made a mistake on this one.
- Square ball goal - definintely a square ball, but sure it's the umpires that should be watching for this? Obviously cawley should be watching it too and maybe he could have called it, but the first responsibilty is with the umpires here
- 'Ghost goal' - How in the name of all that's holy can the ref be blamed for 'missing' this in real time? With the benefit of replays, still images and 48hours later, it's still not 100%  clear if the ball was over the line or not. You can argue that the umpires should have seen it, but even that is harsh imo. But the ref certainly couldn't call it  from out the field.

I'm no fan of cawleys's but let's be fair to the man too.
Who picked the umpires? Whose team is it?

This week's media topic is goal line cameras, Var or whatnot. I accept that there is an element of it being the Dubs, but that shitshow has no place in an AI SF. Not good enough and I am genuinely asking does Croker feed back to him that it wasnt good enough?

do they feed back to all refs? Ref in your game against Galway did not have the best of games? Did he have that fed back? Ref in Tyrone/Kerry game? Why just Cawley?
Literally my question.

I'm asking if the GAA has a formal review mechanism for elite referees like other sports. It's not complicated.

This.

Even when the DUP take a step forward, an acknowledgement that educational attainment needs to improve, it's still couched in Fenian conspiracy and zero sum. Not get your kids to college for their sake, it's themmuns are at it.

Does anyone know what the supervision/review process is? I know every professional soccer game has the referee sat down and given feedback. Does Cawley or his match report get reviewed? Does he learn from his mistakes?

Quote from: Maroon Manc on July 14, 2026, 08:24:30 AMThe power of the media has never been so obvious in the last few days.

How I've laughed at the meltdown from some pundits and ex Dublin players, didn't want to know 2 weeks ago when David Gough rode Galway from start to finish. Paul Flynn should be banished from the Sunday Game for his nonsense.

At the start of the match there was an incident similar to the penalty, except much softer, where O Cofaigh-Byrne turned into a Kerry player and fell over resulting in a 2 pointer for Dublin.

Sean O'Shea was taken out of it with a late sliding tackle as he offloaded the ball - no free.

A lineball for Kerry ended up overturned for a phantom free to Dublin.

Scully attacked 2 Kerry players on his way out from the Kerry goalline clearance. At a minimum, 2 yellow cards.

Any of these dodgy Dublin decisions discussed by any of the Sunday Game pundits or any other pundits? Of course not, that'd be balanced punditry.

Not quite the same thing. Dublin got done by the officials. Just did. Whataboutery isn't relevant.

We take our beating and move on, but we are entitled to our seethe.

with all due respect, you lost because you missed so many easy shots and made a lot of silly passes when a point was on
I'm not disputing Kerry deserved it. Dublin's game management was poor.

But there were three huge calls, all went Kerry's way. One was unambiguously wrong, one was iffy and we will never know about the goal because the umpire wasn't even watching the game.
