Fawlty Towers was one of the best comedies ever made.
It had hype for good reason.

Quote from: Fogarty on October 18, 2025, 05:16:09 PMCome on BB2. Don't be shy about naming the years when the GAA got all the grants and soccer got none.
You made the claim, I'd hate to think you pulled it out of your arse.

This debate has been settled anyway!
Yeah. The GAA definitely don't and historically haven't gotten a disproportionate amount of funding.

The GAA got pitches from the Land Commission that other sports weren't allowed. A tax was then put on rugby and soccer tickets to fund facilities on that free land. This went from 1925 to 1963. But you are right, the GAA never got special treatment.

You change the goal posts every time. Soccer was getting grants, pitches and league grounds well before Bertie and well before the millennium.
Not the GAA's fault that stadiums like Flower Lodge, Milltown and part of Dalymount were cashed in on.

Connolly's mission in life is to be the most difficult person in the room.

It looks like it...
"The GAA get more than every other sport combined." - FALSE
"The GAA got 100% of all funding until Bertie" - FALSE
"No sport other than Gaelic games got one cent of capital grant funding in the 20th century." - FALSE

1. Remove horses and dogs and they do.

2. All capital grants, yes.

3. 1999 aside, they did.

You keep changing the goalposts, so let's simplify it. Point out the years when GAA got 'all the money' and soccer got none.

::)
Apologies. I was a year out.
You haven't a clue what you're talking about.
Show me a year where the GAA got all the grants and every other sport got nothing.

Here is 1993 for example. GAA getting everything?

Any chance of addressing this?

With that in mind......

How much hand out money do Horse Racing and the Dogs get?

Answer: Horse Racing €79.3 million and Greyhound Racing 20 million a year

How much to host the Ryder Cup - A one off event?

Answer: €58 million

Which is the more popular Soccer, Golf, Horse Racing or the Dogs?

Horse racing and golf are big employers, they bring money into the country. Greyhound racing shouldn't get as much.
Money for a Ryder Cup has a payback in marketing Ireland abroad.

Soccer is popular, but a lot of that is English soccer. It costs the Irish economy. Irish soccer fans spend millions on tv subscriptions and trips to England.

So why is rugby getting f**k all then?
Rugby has far less clubs and far less members than the GAA.

Because it's rugby?
The argument is the reason the GAA get the, literal, majority of taxpayer funding is because every other sport is a mess.

I'm suggesting there is a built in state favouritism. The GAA got 100% of all funding until Bertie.
More made up rubbish. Soccer got money before Bertie came along.

The is no favouritism. Soccer can't get itself organised. That's no one's fault except theirs.

That's one way of putting it.
Soccer needs to learn that begging bowl for government cash alone is not a way to finance and develop their game.
You need to find ways to raise funds from your own grassroots.

If they're the biggest sport in the country, as they love to claim, then they should be getting the biggest
chunk of the corporate sponsorships, small and local businesses, individual members.
