GAA Discussion / Re: Homecomings for losing teams
August 11, 2025, 06:05:13 PM
Went to the 1989 homecoming , it was incredible to experience, the county went bananas for weeks before and the homecoming was special . They made their way from knock airport through Kilmovee and stopped before they hit ballagh , Johno stepped off the coach and told the crowd why he stopped here of course he was born in Magherboy in Kilmovee . It was very exciting for all albeit I was a child at the time .

Fast forward to all the finals after , I never went myself , I thought it was getting ridiculous as the finals came and went , 96/97/0/06/12/13/16/17&21  . It's just not right , I don't believe the players wanted in 17 especially or so o heard anyway .

Point is every county is different our journey is uniquely tragic and should not have a homecoming till the day they bring the big cup along with them .

Donegal people are a little mad tbh , they have a parade for winning Ulster and Shur look that's their thing .

If Roscommon / Cavan / Kildare made a final for example and lost id imagine a homecoming would be the right fit , if ya get me

How many lunatics would actually vote for him if by some miracle he got a nomination?

Well this neutral will be wanting a Kerry victory and wouldn't be that fond of them either .

If Donegal play their worst, like their very worst, then you are probably right.

Yeah would need to be a system meltdown by Donegal.

This final all points to a fine margin contest whereby might even require extra time.  Need a good final after the one sided semi-finals and none of the quarter finals were classics either.

What is a system meltdown ? If Clifford and seanie o Shea run absolute riot and Kerry win by 7/8 points is that a system meltdown or just simply the best players in the country showing what they can do ? Look I'm wrong more than I'm right but I just feel people have taken their eye off the ball in recent years and created a lot of hyperbole about decent sides that are not exceptional sides , Armagh / Galway / Derry and now Donegal . Armagh smashed and grabbed a Sam and deservedly so but like I say a lot of commotion created over the greatness of these sides and it's just not really there . Where as Kerry have that ceiling! again just my opinion where they could go on and win a couple more at least .

Ah Jaysus, that's harsh!

I like Jarlath.

He's a bollix.

"Today is the icing not the cake. You are the cake".  ::)

Treats every speech like it's a graveside oration.

A good speech by Jarlath. Congrats Tipp.

It's way too much at this stage , I warmed to it at first but it's too much , hand the cup to the captain with a little few words , not everything has to be like something out of the Michael Collins movie ffs get over yourself Jarlath

If Kerry were to play Tyrone ten times in 2021 , they'd of won about 7 or 8 times but there is the flaw in our main competition, it should be a league format not a cup  competition .

. This is really good Kerry team and it's not getting the recognition it deserves . Imagine any other county in a final with players showing like paudie Clifford, seanie o Shea , Joe o Connor (form he's found is outstanding ) pace of Gavin white , kick passing of Dylan geaney going unnoticed and then you have for the icing on the cake the most skilful footballer of all time on show . I'd be amazed if Kerry don't win this and maybe with a bit to spare too . Bad news for the rest of us is there's more than this year in this Kerry team .

Quote from: thejuice on July 14, 2025, 06:51:27 AMYeah. Hard to know where we really are in the overall standings after yesterday. Felt like a Meath Dublin game from a few years ago. We haven't progressed as much as some would claim but that's not to say progress hasn't been made.

Though there's still a few lads from recent underage success that need to come through but this game doesn't stand still for anyone and there's a lot of work to be done both tactically and physically to close the gap. Hope Robbie has the team primed for Division 1 promotion. Let Leinster take care of itself, just do the minimum and be ready to peak for the All Ireland series.

I came across as a bit disrespectful there (hard to avoid when talking of 96 ;D ) there is no doubt it was a good season for Meath , it won't be as easy  as people think though to build on it , not impossible either though of course .

Mayo got to a couple of under 21 all Irelands after 93 with the likes of k Mortimer , Ciaran Mac (didn't play 96)  , jimmy nallen etc , even Kevin o neill even though he played 93 Christ he must of been young . My point is we were building a very decent side between 93&96 which seen a fair few personnel changes too from 93 .

Maybe 10 starters in 96 didn't feature in 93 .

The narrative following heavy defeats is far too lenient nowadays , it will take better players for Meath to drive on from this year , the team that got hammered yesterday won't be good enough to get to the same position next year . Other top counties will improve on this season , dubs will improve , my own county have some really exciting talent coming through , Galway will be better next year , Tyrone are going to be serious with the underage stars of last couple of years , Derry i personally think will be a better side next year but again my point is the world won't stand still to let an ordinary Meath team plough on just because they made a semi final in 2025 . It's more likely it was a flash in the pan than a statement of future intent

How many years has mcgeaney been in charge of Armagh, 11 I think , how many times has he got to the last four ? He won it last year am I right in saying that's their only year they reached semi under his leadership, if there was ever an example of history is written by the victors .

Last 3/4 years, Armagh , Galway , mixed in with Derry have been very decent sides but you are kidding yourself if you believe them sides have been the same quality of say , Dublin , Donegal , Kerry and Mayo of the last period say 13-18/19 ish type thing,I'm not talking honours either ,quality of 15/16&17 finals ahead of anything I've seen of late . Quality has been so average dubs snatched one with a team of OAP s . There has been a serious lot of hyperbole especially where Galway are concerned, if that were Mayo we'd be labelled everything from bottlers to chokers .

Is manning about ? Long drive home lad

4/6 Galway, my god that is generous odds for a team that needs a win against a team that have the top spot guaranteed no matter if they lose by 100 points

Kerry v Meath , should be a routine victory for the kingdom .

Roscommon v Cork , hard to call this one , cork were very good in Munster clash v Kerry but seemed to have been drained by it . Rossies have potential but don't seem to reach it , ros forwards clique on the day should be enough to see them over the line .

Dubs v Derry ... Dubs if Con is back

Galway v Armagh .. Galway

Louth to beat Clare , Clare seem to have issues with playing for 70 mins

Monaghan to beat Down

Donegal to beat Mayo by whatever they feel like , teams operating at different levels this year unfortunately

Tyrone to hammer Cavan .

Kerry to win the all Ireland and we will all wonder why we labelled it anybody's all Ireland , no team to get within 5 points of them from the knockout stage till they lift Sam in a few weeks time .
