Croke Park has hosted the most Irish college football team, Notre Dame, the most Irish NFL franchise, Pittsburgh Steelers, so it makes sense to host the Premier League team with the strongest Irish connection, Manchester United.

Croke Park to host Manchester United and Leeds in August pre-season friendly
Croke Park will host a soccer game this August for the first time in almost 17 years.

Croke Park is set to host Premier League clubs for the first time when Manchester United and Leeds United play a pre-season friendly there on Wednesday, August 12.
It comes almost 17 years since the last soccer game played at GAA headquarters, a World Cup play-off that Ireland lost 1-0 to France in November 2009.

The staging of the pre-season friendly has been made possible by the windows of the GAA inter-county season and the Premier League opening and closing in harmony.

Because of the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the Premier League start has been pushed out until August 22.

The GAA inter-county season concludes at the end of July with All-Ireland ladies football and camogie finals on successive weekends after that.

Manchester United have a huge Irish following and previously played a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao at the Aviva Stadium in 2023.

But Leeds United also have a substantial following here, particularly among an older generation, and bringing them together on an Irish stage is sure to attract much interest.

Manchester United are due into Ireland next week for a training camp in Carton House and it's expected that the details for the game will be confirmed then.

They may also return to the Kildare resort in August ahead of the Leeds United game.

Croke Park has been broadening its reach to other sports with the staging of an NFL game between Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings last September. It has also hosted five Leinster rugby games over the last two years.

And there is growing anticipation that Katie Taylor will, at last, realise a boxing ambition to fight there as she signs off on her illustrious career, possibly in September.

Tony O'Donoghue is some tool. His interviews are woeful.

2-0 up and coasting then Manning has a brainwave.
2-1 up with 5 minutes to go and couldn't see it out.
Winning the shootout with two kicks to go, but messed them up.

Nothing to see here  ;D

Azaz and Browne never looked confident before their penalties.
Poor shots, sometimes you get away with it, not tonight.

I thought he had retired months ago...or he might as well have!  ;D

It's now 12 months since the wheels came off the Slot wagon and it was clear he was way out of his depth.

Fair pay to him for sticking it not this long!

Quote from: bannside on March 08, 2026, 08:36:42 AMReally? In this sports mad country? Open the gates at 20Euro and there wouldnt be too many empty seats. Throw in a couple of crowd pleasers in the supporting bouts.
There isn't a massive interest in women's boxing.
A good chance that people who proclaim her greatness have never seen her fight and would not bother going to her last one.
A bit like the skort controversy. They same right-on crowd who were outraged by it, still don't go watch camogie.

Handy enough win for Limerick in the end. Cork short some regulars, but good to keep them down, especially when they came up to Limerick trying their hard man tactics.
A better ref than Stack would have kept better control of them.

Quote from: Capt Pat on March 07, 2026, 12:19:15 AMThey should train up a big legged forward to do the job. Eales managed it for Australia and he was a giant. Forwards have the biggest muscles in their legs and if they worked on it should be the best kickers.
Their legs are in a bad way after scrummaging, line outs and rucking though. Backs are able to mind themselves.

In the past, it sounded like the promoters wanted either the GAA or the government to take a bath on the cost of running the event.
Any more willingness from them this time around?

Quote from: Milltown Row2 on March 06, 2026, 08:46:07 AMIf a team wins the premiership by 'falling over the line' do they still count?
Liverpool were falling over the line last year and really it's a dark place for a club to be in.
