today's paper

Success in the National Football League does not simply means points in the bag, it also means cash in the bank.

A few others I recommend

The Tommy & hector show on rte
Alan Green World football on world service podcast
World footbal phone in on radio5 live - good for south america chat

there is surely a gap in the market for a decent independent gaa one - perhaps an opportunity for Jerome given the success of his  video work on vimeo & youtube. Are you out there Jerome? well?

For me, from 80-09

1. Peter Canavan
2. Sean Cavanagh
3. Philip Jordan

The lads from the 80s were good but none on a par with the above. The 90s were crappy enough although a few decent defenders worth a mention. Frank McGuigan '84 had one majestic game.
what about Frank in the '73 ulster final - captain at midfield when still a minor having won the minor final 15 minutes earlier. he was class!

The old chestnut thrown at Armagh supporters a couple of years back was the lack of new talent coming through. Since 2004 Armagh underage teams (minor and under 21) have been very competitive:

2004 Under 21 Ulster and AI winners
2005 Minor Ulster winners
2007 Under 21 Ulster winners (beat by Cork, AI winners by a point in the semis)
2009 Under 21 Ulster finalists; Under 18 Ulster winners and AI finalist

Reasons to be positive.

one underage all Ireland title in 50 yrs is hardly a sign of new talent coming through. You Armagh lads need to get real. What you're listing might win a provincial title or two but no more.
Look north to Tyrone where there are 8 minor/u 21 all irelands in the last 18 years  to deliver 3 sams. A minor win this year would be a step in the right direction but only a step.

Aye and if you know your football history as well as you make out you'd also be keenly aware that Armagh's AI win and other many successes over a decade was based on a lot slimmer pickings from underage success than that list i've given above.  We tend to make the most of what underage talent there is available to us.
Correct

Sam Maguire wins is the only measure of success for the top counties these days. armagh have made the most of their slim pickings only once in history .We outside the county await to see if the latest underage teams will be made the most of. The right choice in manager will also be critical.  Could anyone suggest any collective reasons why Grimley, Kernan & mcGeeny are all avoiding this opportunity then given the reasons to be positive?

I get it now - maybe if Armagh can get a manager in each of the 31 other counties, they'll get an easy passage to a 2nd sam ;D

Perhaps he see more potential with Monaghan than Armagh - the orchard county may be in for a long stint in the also ran league.

Have you had a look at mulgrew during the warm ups for the recent county games?  he looked bulked up to me. Anyone else think so?

anybody any thoughts on whether some more of 2004 all ireland minor winners could be drafted in to the county panel?
Couldn't these 4 defenders step up - Marlowe, Boggs, Gilmore & murray?

no reason why kyle coney can't step up next year. He outshone O'shea of mayo in the minor final replay last year & look at the impact of o'shea this year.

totally agree with the poster. No interest in hurling either. They are two different sports. why should you have them on the same day at the same venue. Mayo meath should have a separate billing.

In 1973 Did Cork wear the vanquished Tyrone players' jerseys in the final or is that an old pub one?

Well they certainly wore white  that day with red trim as Galway were in traditional maroon. Got the program for that final in front of me! Both teams in the minors had to change as well .Tyrone in bui ( saffron) & Kildare in glas (green).
