Joke that its not on TV, whoever is in charge of scheduling the games at RTE must have a really hard-on for Kildare as they have never been off the box this summer.
Kildare weren't on last weekend and it's a gaa decision in this instance, nothing to do with the broadcasters.

just finished Forbrydelsen (The Killing), absolutely brilliant. (dont go near the Killing thread as there's spoilers there)
i've finished series one of the US version - are they the same plot etc?  Has anyone watched both?

I'd definitely recommend the US version, a wee bit silly in places, but overall very good.

Breaking Bad is excellent too.

those stats are incorrect aswell as tyrone scored 1-02 from their defence against armagh, not 1-01
easy mistake to make, seeing s o'neill scored 0.1 you'd just presume it was stephen.

Three episodes into the new series of Curb Your Enthusiasm and I am impressed. The third episode, Palestinian Chicken, was the best so far and one of my favourites of the whole lot. Good to see Funkhouser getting in on the act more.

First episode of Entourage down as well, not really much happening, just a recap/refresher of what happened. Look forward to the rest of the series now they can get into some proper story arcs. Hope it doesn't turn into a whole will they / won't they they with E and Sloane.
Watched the first two curbs last night - still worth watching and a few great scenes, but I can't see it extending much longer and that's probably for the best.  Something the Entourage makers shoud have figured about around season 5 (that or killed off Eric).

Dissent

In my defence I am heavily dyslexic so that wasn't a bad effort.

I went to Ballymoney Today to watch the Milk Cup game between Tyrone and Fermanagh (unaware that the same two Counties were playing in the Junior Section as well as the Premier Section). The Premier game was won 3-2 by Fermanagh after two late Goals.

I noticed a few things about the crowd similar to a GAA Crowd:

3. The 'Crazy Women' fans. They may have been huns, but they still had the distinctive Fermanagh Accent and lousy chanting.
I know all the Fermanagh teams - players, management, admin and supporters - to be entirely mixed (as are, I'm pretty sure, all the other County teams). None of those people would thank you for your use of the term "Hun", nor indeed any term which sought to differentiate them.

All of which is, perhaps, the biggest difference  between Association Football and Gaelic Football...  ::)

Quote from: ExcellentDriver on July 25, 2011, 08:59:03 PMbtw, I talked to a Derry City fan from Enniskillen at the game, as well as see a boy with a Fermanagh GAA Tracksuit. Also, the fella who got both Tyrone Goals goes to Holy Trinity in Cookstown.
And still you deem it a "foreign" game...  :o

No EG, you wouldn't get that kind of talk in Mayo, please don't judge GAA fans or the GAA by the language of the dinosaurs.
exactly, any mayo lads I know still refer to them as 'tans'

So you think we shouldn't slove problems at the highest level because we can't do at the lowest levels. I may have you mixed up with someone else but I think you coach soccer at the lower levels. When I played soccer we never had linesmen, except for very big games like cup finals, so if you're consistent you must think that linesmen should be removed from every level?

No you are spot on I chair one of the largest youth leagues in the North and coach an under 12 team. What I meant is I don't want to see games that are supposed to be the same level being subject to different rules. For example in Armagh if Cross' pitch was to get the posts with sides nets then they should either be taken down for league games or all teams in Armagh should use them as they are all playing at the same level and should therefore all be subject to the same rules. It's slightly different for underage games.

David, every pitch in the country would have them.
They're just nets!
exactly, they're not a technological advance, they just help the referee and umpire determine if something was a score or not.
On the subject, do they even need the extra posts - sure could some sort of net not be thrown up between the (new higher) posts, if the ball's in it, it's a score, if not, then it's not.  You could have some sort of a pulley system to throw these up for every game and therefore wind shouldn't be an issue.

Wind can be quite significant in tennis

Found this explanation from a poster on a tennis website:

QuoteThe actual Hawkeye system uses a predictive algorithm to guess where the ball should be during the next measurement sample. If the ball deviates from this, it takes into account the deviation during the next prediction. From using a series of samples, it is possible to compensate for varying trajectories due to spin or wind. Gusty wind conditions may affect accuracy somewhat if the ball location changes are sudden and extreme, but I don't think that any condition that is playable would be outside the capabilities of the system, and if it were they would just have to increase the sampling rate and throw some more CPU cycles at it.

Did O'Connor come down with the ball?  If so it was better catch than the Aussie one linked above which has been coined as 'the best catch of all time'

Hawkeye is the best solution here, sponsorship could cover most if not all the cost, a decision would be immediate and indisputable (afaik) so why not go for it?

Tell me how Hawkeye will work in a a football/hurling scenario and tell me how it is a better option than simply installing side-nets, which can easily be done in every pitch in the country.

Well for a start we installed the side nets on our brand new pitch and "they're a great job, blah blah blah". Yeah sure didn't the wind get up and pull the posts at least a further metre apart each! We soon got rid of them!
what happened exactly?  Were these posts from the lads linked to by Jinxy?  What height were they?  As Jinxy said though, it couldn't be that hard to fix?

QuoteAre all the upper tears for hogan and cusack already sold out

Too much crying up there!!
I'd say they probably aren't opening them though
that's the norm.

You know the way stadia around the world try and present themselves as being full, sometimes like Arsenal they paint a crowd for empty terraced sections (turned out to be rather prophetic regarding the atmosphere at the emirates), well, the gaa in keeping a large section of terracing as empty do the complete opposite.  Why?  Sure it's so they get an extra tenner a head from those attending, times is tough you know, since they're probably fairly dedicated to be coming, they'll hardly mind the extra tenner.  It'll help pay for the legions of frontline security lads who we now have to keep them off the pitch - didn't work too well at clones though.

"He doesnt know what tomorrow will bring and doesnt matter if you are recovering 20 hours, 20 days or 20 years. They are always only one drink away from it."

This is the kind of crap that AA tell people with alcohol problems. The fact is that there are loads of people out there who have managed to stop drinking on their own and are not 'one drink away from it'. One size does not fit all. Total abstinence may also not be necessary, I know one person who would have been described as an alcoholic who now sips two beers all night and never a drop more.

Also. telling people with an alcohol problem that they are powerless isn't helpful in my opinion.
As you point out yourself, one size does not fit all, the same word is used to describe many different cases.  In the case you describe, maybe it was the wrong word in the first place.

The goalposts linked by Jinxy would be a better solution.  They're 16m, normally posts are 11m and croker posts are 13m.  At 16m they're 15ft higher than most county grounds posts, that'd take almost all of the balls which are currently higher than the posts out (certainly in football anyway?).  The best thing about these is that they should be affordable by most clubs and certainly by every county.
Long term maintenance could be an issue, any other major drawbacks??

Brolly being the talented QC that he is, outmanuevered the hapless Davis,
he said the article was taken out of context but the original article in gaelic life was far more insulting than the extracts on the examiner.
Davis failed to call him on it.
Brolly also wants to be an honourary kerry man his sycophancy towards them is cringe worthy.
And Cork half backs scored more than kerry HBs in the last 2 years.
is that made up or can you back it up - I honestly don't know, it's just that since pauld kindly provided some stats on Cork half back scoring, i'd like to see figures from now on.
League and championship separate of course and number of games played will also be essential.
