GAA Discussion / Re: Connacht SFC 2020

Well done to Mayo, got the win and that's all that counts - best of luck for the remainder of the championship.
As said elsewhere, it took us 20+ minutes to get to the pitch of the game and our turnovers, mostly self inflicted, were criminal at times.
Some huge performance and especially from Walsh, S Kelly and Conroy.
Never was John Daly as badly missed as the second half today - needed him in the middle of that half back line.
Eoghan McLoughlin was Mayos standout player - Ruane wasn't in the top 5 players on the pitch and no idea how he ended up with MOTM.

Best of luck to our lads tomorrow.  It's a lesser team without the likes of Daly, Comer and a not fully fit Steede but I'm a little more optimistic than some of the Galway lads here!  Whether right or wrong, I put little stock into that league result in Tuam as there were a lot of injuries and Covid related absentees - it will have zero bearing on tomorrow IMO.
Hopefully we will be good enough to get close to parity around the middle third, really test that Mayo FB line regularly,  pressurise Clarke's KO's and see where that takes us.  Let's hope the weather in Salthill is half decent and contributes to a great Conn Final.

Galway threw that game away in 2 absolute mins of madness - 5 up and well in control and threw it away. Might be a blessing in disguise in the long run. A win would have glossed over a few positional issues.  Team and management will be rightly sickened this evening though.

It was a very good team by Tipperary's historical standards of being a minnow

But in the real sense they were far from a top team

I think Galway will go full Jim McGuinness in this game because it is a tactic they have had success with against Mayo in the past, if they play an open game, Durcan and Keegan will kill them

Any time Galway play Mayo, they have to stop Mayo's running game as an absolute priority
There is zero chance of PJ implementing such a game plan, that is absolutely not his football philosophy and never will be.............

I wonder where Syferus is these days?
Well where ever he is, I'd say the form isn't great with him today!  Mind you, I could be in the same boat myself next Monday!!

Mayo were well up for it early on and put the game away from Ros a long way from the finish and really coasted through the second half.  Surprised at Ros, they were just so slow and ponderous and really didn't lay a glove on Mayo.  That's 2 reasonable championship games under the belt now for Mayo and will deservedly start as warm favs for the Conn final.  Thankfully Galways many COVID related issues appear to have cleared up from the latter stages of the league but we will need to see a major improvement in performance and form of a few key players to trouble Mayo.

Davy looks to me to be someone with a shortish lifespan so maybe that has expired. He has done well there though.

Yep limerick, tipp and Galway the three to catch so far assuming tipp are what they were.
I wouldn't be putting ourselves up on any pedestal just yet.  Yes, good win this evening but it has to be viewed in the context of the the opposition and Wexford were very poor.  They hardly raised a gallop and their second half performance was abysmal IMO.  KK will be a different animal altogether despite their scare in the earlier game this afternoon.

Will be a long half for Galway here I think, that is a gale there in Salthill and 9 points is nowhere near enough of a score with it, they are not playing well again this week, too many lads out of form. Conroy playing unreal but there's not much else with him out there.
That foul by James McCarthy on Ian Burke just before ht was some of the sneakiest dirt you'll ever see on a pitch.

Clumsy from Jamsie.  Lost control of ball and tried to get his foot under the ball. Nothing more than a yellow card.
It was a shocking tackle, knew full well what he was at and Burke was damn lucky to only hobble off the pitch.
The score line flattered Dublin in the end but they had plenty in the tank and could have turned it up a notch if needed.
We had a number of players out there today that are just not at the required level to seriously challenge at the business end of the championship.  Hard to see us having much of a say this year.

A lot of Galway mistakes leading to easy Dub scores.  McCarthy taken off before he got sent off!!  I'm struggling with some of McGoldricks reffing, missing a lot of stuff off the ball. Hopefully we dig in for the last 20 and show a bit fight.  Neither of Galway's MF are up to this level.

Delighted with that win and the overall display in general.  Real pity both teams were a good bit under strength on the day.  Hopefully a few of the absentees will be available for the final next weekend, if it goes ahead of course.

Covid-19 - GAA Allianz National League Update

A Chara

In light of this morning's Government announcement, the GAA, An Cumann Camógaíochta and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association have decided to suspend all activity at club, county and educational levels until March 29 (inclusive) from midnight.

This is to include all games, training and team gatherings at all ages and all grades.

We will continue to liaise with Government officials and review the situation between now and the end of the month, assessing the impact of these measures on our competitions.

In the meantime, the Association is encouraging all members to continue to follow the guidelines which have been provided by the Health Authorities.

It would be more surprising if they went ahead in CP at this stage.

Alternative venues could be either the Gaelic Grounds or Ennis for Galway / Kerry & possibly Breffni or Mullingar for the Dubs & Tyrone?

Really poor performance overall from our lads in Navan yesterday.  We were just not at it in any shape or form at all for the first 25 - 30 mins and were blessed to be only 4 down at HT.  As has been outlined above by AFA, our kickout were atrocious throughout the entire game.  Gleeson needs a ton of work as he just does not seem comfortable at all with short KO's in particular.  He is also very poor to see options on the pitch, I can think of a few occasions when Sean Kelly was free on the stand side during the second half and GOD on the terrace side in the first and he either didnt see or ignored them - we simply will not do anything of note in the Summer unless this issue is fixed.

Paul Conroy and to a lesser extent Shane Walsh won us that game yesterday - Conroys point from the terrace side late in the 2nd half was as good a score as I have seen in a long while not withstanding some of Walsh's efforts through the league.  Indeed Shane hit a trade mark score himself late on.  Neither made the highlights reel last either either which I found bizarre!  Comer was a massive loss on the day - his abrasive and very direct style was especially missed in the 1st has as we looked rudderless up front.

Our 2 central defenders got pulled out of position a little too easy yesterday and we were in trouble every time Meath ran at us, again, something the management team will need to have a look at.  I was on the terrace side so wasnt aware of any of the sideline antics far side but there was a lot of off the ball stuff from both sides through the game with Kelly in particular getting a lot of treatment.  In fairness to the ref, I though he did reasonably well through the game.

Improvement needed for our final two home games as Mayo will be fighting tooth and nail to avoid relegation and the Dubs will be their usual efficient selves.  An extra game of a league final would also be of great benefit to both the team and management IF we get there as we have plenty to improve on.

Savage amount of Galway posts in here of late , deny the giddiness if ya wish but Joyce has really put belief back into Galway football , I'm starting to think gawd no please no .
Now Larry, no need to be getting excited, it's the same few Galway posters and most of us have been around here a long while at this stage!  Galway were very poor last year so a new manager in with a good start to the league will always give a bit of a bounce - probably a little extra bounce on this occasion as PJ has a pretty elevated standing in GAA circles based on his playing career and is somewhat media friendly (so far anyway!).

As with most teams, right now we are a good bit short of matching the Dubs come the Summer but sure all we can try and do is close the gap and see where it takes us - isn't that what the rest of us are all trying to do anyway!!

Galway team for the Meath match:
1   Connor Gleeson
2   Seán Kelly
3   Seán Ó Maoilchiaráin
4   Johnny Heaney
5   Liam Silke
6   John Daly
7   Cillian McDaid
8   Ronan Steede
9   Tom Flynn
10   Eamon Brannigan
11   Damien Comer
12   Michael Daly
13   Martin Farragher
14   Shane Walsh
15   Adrian Varley

O'Donnell very unlucky, thought he was excellent last Sunday and has played well so far in 2020 but now is the time to try out different combinations in the lines looking towards the summer.
Farragher in for the start, can't go any worse for him than his last appearance in the county jersey whatever else happens.
Gary is unlucky for sure. The man rarely has a bad game for us.
Possibly Pj trying out combinations.
I think Daly has the number 6 shirt nailed on - O'Donnell, Silke, McDaid and Molloy probably fighting for the 2 starting wing back slots.
I know they have no points on the board but I think this is a very tricky game for us - especially immediately after Tyrone given the margin of victory.
One thing that is evident - we need to do something about our own kick outs.
We will be targeted there by the big boys later in the year.
Molloy went off injured in the club final so I'm assuming he's injured?  He hasn't even featured in a match day squad so far in the league.  Gary is extremely unlucky to miss out, was excellent last Sunday and has actually improved this year IMHO.
