GAA Discussion / Brisbane Lions to Ulster
July 13, 2009, 04:47:46 AM
QuoteBRISBANE'S BELFAST PROPOSAL
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 at 10:20 amBY ALLISON WALLACE

BRISBANE have revealed they are in negotiations with Irish officials over a 'clash-of-the-codes' game which could raise up to $1.2 million for charity.

The game, which according to Brisbane CEO Michael Bowers has been four years in the making, would take place between the Lions and an Ulster province all-star team, at a Northern Ireland 32,500 seat stadium.

"There's been quite a bit of interest in a game in Northern Ireland...the game's big everywhere there," Bowers told SEN this morning.

Bowers said that the match would preferably be played in October, and will follow the Gaelic style of football more closely than Australian Rules.

"There would be more of an accent on Gaelic footy to capture the attention of the locals, they don't get to see a lot of big games up there."

The proposed game is also seen by Bowers as an excellent opportunity for the development of Brisbane's young players.

"For the young, developing (players), to see some of the stuff that goes on in other parts of the world, it would be great for their development."

LOL @ "they don't get to see a lot of big games up there."

Do they think its all green fields, mountains and Farmers ? Are they mistaking Belfast for Kerry ?  ;D j/k

Hurling Discussion / Figured out the Cork situation
February 13, 2009, 11:49:43 AM
The Cork players have done this and backed themselves into a corner because they know theres no point in playing anymore, they're afraid of Kilkenny and they're afraid of getting another bating that would damage their reputation.

This way they can "retire" and say they could have given it a real go when they know they're no match for the Cats.

Lads, I fecking hate this rubbish of diving. Its the most sickening shit in any sport. I hate it with a passion.

Is there any rule about feigning injury ? Can't video evidence be used ?

When I played and its not that long ago and I got knocked down I'd get straight back up without a second thought unless I actually wasn't able to. The thought of falling over like a drunk giraffe never ran through my mind when I played.

What can be done ?

GAA Discussion / GAA 1970's vs GAA 2000's
July 12, 2008, 08:13:58 AM
Scenario.

The best Gaelic footballers from the 2000's through the use of a time machine developed by a mayo farmer as a way to go back in time and drink cheap guinness, travel back to 1970 and face the best Gaelic footballers of that era.

My prediction -> The slaughter that would ensue would make the International rules fights look timid. 1970's footballers to batter the living shite out of the team today both in pure physicality and skill.

Of course the referee will be from the 1970's too :)

Seriously though ... why is gaelic football getting so timid compared to yesteryear ? It seems any good fair hits are punished and it also seems that compared to the lads 30 years ago we're all a crowd of pansies.

I always say that compared to our fathers we're weak soft f**kers and after watching some old matches lately I have to say I am 100% right :D

GAA Discussion / Greatest football ever game
July 12, 2008, 07:16:51 AM
I know this was done before but I'm actually making a request.

Would love a copy of the 1977 game between Dublin and Kerry.

And since the hype may have died down, is there anyone who stills thinks mayo vs dublin in '06 was the best ?

Well lads, seeing as its back on. What are they doing to prevent lads just having a boxing match instead of a football game ?

I heard talk of neutral refs from maybe rugby league. Was that bs or .... ?

Alright guys, maybe I'm compltely off the mark with this one but I'd like to make a point and ask a question.

I'm a software engineer by trade (not currently working in the industry) and I make a lot of use of software which is classified as open source.

A very short and incomplete definition of Open Source software. -> "Open source is a set of principles and practices on how to write software. Literally "open source" means the source code is available to the users. The Open Source Definition, which was created by Bruce Perens[1] and Eric Raymond and is currently maintained by the Open Source Initiative, adds additional meaning to the term. One should not only get the source code but also have the right to use it. If the latter is denied the license is categorized as a shared source license."

Let me put it in laymans terms.

Open Source Software = Free software where you can take it for free, change the code to suit you for free and distribute it for free to anyone or as many people as you like completely free.

I don't know how many tech heads are on this forum but basically you have hundreds of thousands of people qualified as software engineers like me who make software in their free time and share it with other people for free. The only condition of the license is that they get credit for their work, thats it. They don't ask for a penny for the actual software, yes some will ask for money to support you but thats a different subject altogeather.

Its the difference between buying microsoft windows and paying for phone support from Microsoft when you need help.
In open source you don't pay for the software, only for the support and thats even if its offered at all.

This is not bad software by any means, its actually some of the best software you can get. Google runs on it and is a big name supporter of it, most of the internet is run by it, mobile phones, Some PDA's etc etc.

Some of you might be familiar with VLC, the media player. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Its completely free.
Others might know OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org/
Or Ubuntu www.ubuntulinux.org
etc, etc, etc, etc.

My point ? These are highly qualified people (including myself) who give their free time and effort up and don't get anything in return. I know its hardly the same as what we are talking about with the grants etc but I think its an important thing to consider.

A lot of Open Source Software (completely free) is as good if not better then the software you buy. This is a professional job done by people who are not getting paid for it and believe me, the time and effort it takes to work on one of these projects is not short or easy.

Maybe I'm completely raving here, just thought I should bring that up for discussion.

GAA Discussion / Setanta showing
November 21, 2007, 06:45:05 AM
Guys as hoganstand points out -> "The Connacht final between Ballina Stephenites (Mayo) and St.Brigid's (Roscommon) in Ballina will be shown 'live' on TG4 while the Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) v St.Gall's (Antrim) Ulster final will have a deferred showing from Newry."

Can anyone tell me if Setanta are showing these ? I'm abroad at the min and would love to get some GAA. I'm having serious withdrawl sympthoms.

Lads, does anyone have copies of galway vs kilkenny 2005 or mayo vs dublin 2006 ? I really want to get my hands on them.

Just out of interest ...

Dublin (appealing Peader Cartons banning) and Cork appealing everything all the time. What county boards "usually" take their punishment (most of the time) and get on with things ?

I would have thought Kerry myself but that's because I just can't remember them getting any suspensions etc ....

GAA Discussion / Commentating "lower level" matches
August 15, 2007, 10:36:06 PM
Alright we all know the quality of commentators leaves ... a "bit" to be desired but i was particularly pissed off listening to the Nicky Rackard cup final, and to a lesser extent the Tommy Murphy cup.

Things that pissed me off.

1. The constant reminder that this was "tier 3 hurling". Every 5 minutes they'd mention it. I know its a fact but it hardly needs to be commented on all the time. Yes they are a lower grade then the other two but they deserve the same damn respect and i found the constant reminding of this disrespectful.

2. Talking about the "bad quality" all the time. Yes they had some fair points, there were some simple mistakes but they constantly went on about it and they constantly referred to the feck ups as bad quality. They don't do the same in the higher levels.

e.g >
In the Nicky Rackard -> "Oh that was a bad shot by X."
In in Liam McCarthy -> "Oh that was great vision by X but it just didn't work out ..."

They constantly make excuses for the bad feck ups by the top players but just stamp the title "bad quality" on the lower levels.

Yes i've had a few but it still pisses me off.

Right lads, this isn't just a hurling problem. Its a GAA problem.

Dublin hurler Peadar Carton won his appeal before the GAA's Central Appeals Committee on Thursday night.

According to the Croke Park press office the appeal was upheld on technical grounds but under new disciplinary rules the matter has been referred back to the Central Competitions Control Committee for a re-hearing.

Carton's suspension would have kept him out of Dublin's All-Ireland under-21 campaign. He was suspended for pulling across Tipperary's Paul Curran and breaking his jaw, a foul trenchantly criticised at the time by then Tipp manager Michael "Babs" Keating.

Only the most blind tinted glasses wearing nut could ever think that this was an "accident".

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QqIXgTsYirM <-- 1 minute, ten seconds into that clip.

How can anyone expect people to play the game when incidents like that aren't punished ? My god, its completely disgraceful.

GAA Discussion / The Langers vs West Dublin
August 09, 2007, 11:28:16 AM
Seen this on peoplesrepublic and thought it was priceless.

http://www.peoplesrepublicofcork.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=627

Quote"As a result of Sligo's brutality on the Cork ace, it is expected that he will miss the semi final clash in a fortnight's time against West Dublin who defeated Tyrone on Saturday. As the championship's top scorer so far with 3-27 his loss will be a heavy one for Billy Morgan but if Masters played for 15 minutes with the horrific injury perhaps he shouldnt be written off just yet..."
