GAA Discussion / Foreign GAA players
May 26, 2010, 01:03:55 PM
Just thinking about something I wrote on another thread, does anyone have any foreign lads (or lasses) amongst the ranks of their playing staff as some of these could turn out to be real stars of the future as they certainly have the physique

GAA Discussion / Cork folk at it again...
November 25, 2009, 04:46:16 PM
Never bloody happy:  :o  ::)

The interim agreement between the GPA and the GAA has hit its first major stumbling block with opposition in Cork, writes RTÉ's Gaelic Games correspondent Jonathan Mullin.

Tuesday night's county board meeting on Leeside saw a robust debate on the historic announcement with the majority of those who spoke on the topic opposed to the deal.

Only one delegate welcomed the new link-up between the two associations.

Cork's delegates have been sent back to their clubs to find out their views before the county board mandate their Central Council delegate on how Cork will vote at next week's Central Council meeting.

'There was quite a lot of opposition to the deal with the GPA and clubs felt they needed to go back and consult with their members,' said board PRO Ger Lane.

Last weekend's announcement of official recognition for the GPA and €1.6m in funding needs majority backing from next spring's Annual Congress.

General discussion / 250,000 State employees on strike
November 24, 2009, 09:48:27 AM
Widespread disruption is expected today as 250,000 State employees hold a one-day nationwide strike.

From prison officers, to nurses, from local authority workers to civil servants - the public service will essentially shut down for a day.

Public sector unions have said the Government has refused to engage with them on ways of cutting the State pay and pensions' bill by €1.3bn without hitting pay, pensions or services.

AdvertisementSpokesman for the trade union IMPACT Bernard Harbor said if the Government cuts pay again there will be more industrial action but said it is unlikely that there will be a second day of strikes on the day of the Budget.

A number of unions have deferred strike action in areas hit by the recent floods.

Public transport is also running as normal.

55,000 welfare payments due on Wednesday will be delayed. However St Vincent de Paul is advising those with a social services card to collect payments at their post office.

Emergency cover will be in place in essential health services, though strike exemptions granted to key areas including palliative and intensive care.

Once the strike is over, unions will return to talks with the Government on long-term restructuring the public service, and short-term measures to cut the State pay bill.

However, talks will be intense given there are just two weeks to the Budget.

Meanwhile, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, which are forbidden by law to strike, have issued a message of support to unions and said it has instructed members not to make themselves available for overtime.

My own personal opinion is this stinks from high heaven. Molly coddled, overpaid public sector workers spitting their dummies out  >:( get back to work and be thankful you have a handy job in the first place (sweeping statement I know but it does apply to 90% of public sector workers who earn damn good money, which is alot higher than their colleagues in the north, for the jobs they do)

Whats the going rate for solicitor fees (hourly rate) for litigation cases and other services?

I've been given a quote by a Dublin-based firm for €300 per hour, I'm thinking this is astronimcal but before I go back to them I was wondering does anyone know whether this is reasonable or not?

General discussion / Staunton returns to management
October 05, 2009, 01:23:37 PM
oh dear poor Stan

Darlington have appointed former Republic of Ireland coach Steve Staunton as their new manager.

The club have also installed experienced former England international Kevin Richardson as his assistant in a double appointment.

Staunton will take over on Wednesday, after Darlington's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Leeds, until the end of the current season. The pair will take charge for Saturday's league game at Dagenham & Redbridge.

two ends of the scale. We were debating Stephen Ireland last week and he is one guy who seems to hate Irish national team and here we have another wishing so hard that the manager would give him a chance;

Andy Reid is surely worth a place in the squad as his set pieces and creative play could be priceless for Ireland

GAA Discussion / Penalties in gaelic football
September 25, 2009, 11:55:09 AM
Penalties are too difficult and fail to punish the culprit -- it pays to foul

How many times over the past few years has this column mentioned the unfair rules surrounding the award and taking of penalties in Gaelic football?

When you compare the requirement to that in soccer, it seems downright wrong and no doubt the statistics support this. Gaelic football penalties are just too difficult and fail to punish the team that concedes them. The rectangle in which the foul must occur is too small, the goals too narrow and the ball placed too far away. The goalkeeper advances even though it is against rule and most of the players in the immediate vicinity of a penalty break every other rule in the book to gain advantage.

The underlining issue is the conversion rate and the question of whether it is clever to foul and take your chances. The All-Ireland final programme carried some tidy analysis in this regard and proves beyond all doubt that fouling pays. Not only that, referees, once they have awarded the penalty, rarely if ever sanction the culprit, no matter how savage the tackle.

The evidence then: 14 penalties were awarded in the 2009 championship and 9 goals were scored (total of 27 points) giving a return of 1.93 points per kick when the expectation should be much closer to 3 points. The previous year was worse: in 2008 referees blew for 16 penalties but they yielded 9 goals and 1 point (28 points in total) for an average of 1.75 points per kick. Irrefutable evidence then that it does pay to foul.

If you want to make a name for yourself why not frame a motion for your club's AGM and see if it reaches the floor of Congress. You might consider matters such as taking the kick from a spot 11m from the goal instead of the current 13m. Or what about increasing the size of the large rectangle both in length and breath?

With defences beginning to dominate due to new tactical formations goals are beginning to dry up. Kerry failed to have a single shot at the goal target in the senior final and Tommy Griffen can attribute the Cork goal, brilliant as it was, to a slip. Need I remind you that last Sunday both minor teams failed to trouble the umpires in charge of the green flags? Get drafting.

General discussion / Security alert in Co. Fermanagh
September 16, 2009, 11:33:50 AM
Courtesy of The Irish Times

Several families had to evacuate their homes in the North today after the discovery of what police fear could be another huge terrorist bomb near the border.

As Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson prepared to meet British prime minister Gordon Brown to discuss funding to enable the transfer of policing and justice powers from London to Belfast, a stretch of road was sealed off in Co Fermanagh.

Security forces moved in after warnings that a device had been left by republican dissident near the village of Roslea on the Lisnaskea Road.

Last week a 600lb bomb was defused in south Armagh amid claims that the threat posed by republicans opposed to the peace process was as high as at any time since the Omagh bomb which killed 29 people in Omagh, Co Tyrone, in August 1998.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, who accompanied Mr Robinson at today's London talks, has already warned that unless the new justice department is set up before the end of the year, the transfer of powers could be delayed until after the next general election.

Today's meeting is a new attempt to reach agreement on the level of funding, which could run to hundreds of millions of pounds.

Mr Robinson said any agreement would have to have the approval of Conservative leader David Cameron.

He said: "There is a possibility of an alternative government, and it would be irresponsible of us to simply tie up a deal with the present occupant of Downing Street, to find that in a year's time everything was to change."

Police said the security operation came after officers were made aware of various claims made in recent weeks and months about explosive devices left or abandoned in the area.

They had been made in telephone calls to local businesses and media organisations.

A statement said: "While every effort has been made to resolve these claims, which come from a small number of criminals who appear intent on disrupting the lives of businesses and residents of the area, it has become necessary to conduct a search.

"We are committed to keeping disruption to an absolute minimum. The culpability for any that does take place lies squarely with those who made the claims.

"They must not be allowed to ruin the lives of local residents and businesses.

"The claims made in Fermanagh are in addition to a number of incidents in the county over the past 18 months in which explosive devices targeting members of the security forces have been planted.

"The discovery and disposal of a massive bomb in South Armagh in recent days underlines our need for a careful and controlled response to these claims."
