Sutherland wears dress on Letterman show

'24' actor Kiefer Sutherland wore a dress on last night's 'The Late Show With David Letterman' after losing a bet with a friend.

Digital Spy reports the actor appeared on the show wearing army boots and a green dress.

AdvertisementWhen quizzed by David Letterman he said "I lost a bet over the weekend, I was so sure New England was going to win that I told a guy who used to be my friend that if they lost I would wear a dress on Letterman."

"The guy I made the bet with, this is the end of our friendship, the end of the debt that I had for the bet. This is it!"

The host offered $1,000 to Sutherland if he rode on the subway wearing the dress to which he responded "Riding the subway would be easier than what I am going through right now. This is the most humiliating moment of my life!"

GAA may bring in players names on shirts

GAA Director General Paraic Duffy has revealed that the organisation may introduce players names on the back of shirts, in a bid to assist referees in identifying players.

The mandatory usage of helmets in hurling is expected to lead to problems in identifying players and Duffy confirmed that having names on shirts is one proposal the GAA are looking into.

'Going forward it's something we might look at,' Duffy told the Examiner.

'At the moment our primary concern is to get everyone wearing a helmet, that's our first goal. Marketing the games comes after that.

'But it is a valid point. It's been an issue for quite a long time that hurlers are not as easily recognisable as footballers.'

Ahern's biography earnings granted tax-free status

THE REVENUE Commissioners have granted former taoiseach Bertie Ahern tax-free status under the artists' exemption scheme for earnings from his autobiography.

He is among 69 new additions to the list of tax-free artists including 33 writers, 18 painters, five playwrights and scriptwriters, three musicians, three installation artists, three photographers, two sculptors and one illustrator.

The perk is granted to a work that is "original and creative" and is "generally recognised as having cultural or artistic merit".

Mr Ahern is believed to have received a substantial advance from publisher Random House, which describes the book as "frank and revealing" and giving the "truth behind the man who is Bertie" for the first time.

Mr Ahern joins his daughter Cecelia Ahern on the exemption list. The success of her books since she first published PS, I Love You at the age of just 21 has made her one of the country's wealthiest writers.

In 2008 her first play Mrs Whippy premiered at the Liberty Hall Theatre and she is a co-creator of the comedy sitcom Samantha Who? starring Christina Applegate.

Others getting the perk are Cork hurler Donal Óg Cusack for Come What May ; Kilkenny hurling manager Brian Cody for his autobiography; Frank Lahiffe for Séamus Brennan: A Life in Government ; RTÉ newsreader Michael Murphy for At Five in the Afternoon: My Battle with Male Cancer ; and publisher John Mulcahy for his first novel, Union .

Up until 2006 the scheme was unique in the world for allowing artists to keep every cent of their earnings, though they did pay PRSI. An earnings cap of €250,000 was introduced in 2006 and last December's budget reduced the cap to €125,000.

The identities of recipients of the tax break remained secret until 2002, when it was decided to name those who had applied for the exemption from 1998 onwards. International stars such as U2, Westlife and the Corrs, singers Enya and Chris de Burgh, and best-selling authors have not been named as recipients, even though they are believed to have used the scheme prior to 1998.

Before the scheme was capped one mystery artist – thought to be one of the country's super-rich rock stars – earned €10 million in a year under the scheme without paying any tax.

So Bertie is an "artist" now...  and won't have to pay taxes on his biography sales, that's not very patrontic of him is it?   :P

You couldn't make this stuff up

Report shows decline in pubs, clubs

More than 1,500 pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants have shut their doors in the past five years according to a new report by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.

The report published today points to falling employment and revenues in the industry, alongside rising costs.

This is the biggest survey of licensed premises in this country, according to the Irish Independent, and was carried out by Dublin City University Business School.

The Drinks Industry Group of Ireland, which commissioned the report, says the evident decline in the industry began before 2004, when the last industry-wide survey was conducted.

Since that time, four fifths of licensed premises surveyed say they have undertaken measures to improve business.

However, today's report reveals that the decline has accelerated in the past 18 months.

In seeking to identify the causes of the closures, the report points to a combination of factors including tougher drink-driving laws, and the smoking ban.

Pubs and other licensed premises outside Dublin face the most uncertain future, with one in three rural pubs predicting that they will struggle to survive.

Over half of those surveyed said that they had started advertising for custom, with many also now providing entertainment.

While I understand it is a hard climate for them, I'm not too sure I have too much sympathy for them...

Imagine a business having to try and improve themselves or even provide entertainment.... we have sunk to terrible lows during this recession....

GAA Discussion / Cavan's Top 3 GAA Players
October 30, 2009, 06:45:51 PM
Well when I say GAA players I am just gonna stick to footballers.  If left to the wider fields of GAA, Paul Brady would surely be in it given his recent 3 in a row win at the World Handball Championships....

So anyway.... I'm biased about this but...

Hughie O'Reilly
Charlie Gallagher
and Dermot McCabe

The first two - because they are true heros for the Breffni Blues and Cootehill Celtic and Dermot because he is the best I have seen with my eyes in a Cavan Jersey

Haven't come across a thread for this topic on here... Mightn't have looked too hard though but what do people think about it?

Seems like the government wanted to go ahead and cut the limit to a blood alcohol level of 50 mg down from 80 mg, although they are getting a lot of stick from back benchers in their own party and other high profile people like the Banty!!!

So what do you think, should it be left where it is at 80 mg, or is the new proposed level ok or even not going far enough??

GAA Discussion / No GOAL challenge for Kerry???

No GOAL challenge for Kerry

21 September 2009

Kerry have declined to play in the annual GOAL challenge match, which could have raised EUR30,000 for charity.

GOAL chief John O'Shea has privately expressed his disappointment at the Kingdom's decision not to play in the traditional charity fund-raiser.

A press release issued by O'Shea before yesterday's All-Ireland final pointed out that in the event of Cork winning, they would play a challenge against Nemo Rangers at Pairc Ui Rinn on Wednesday night in aid of the charity's work among the "poorest of the poor" in the developing world.

It added: "Should Kerry triumph, there won't be any GOAL challenge this year."

GAA Discussion / Cavan v Limerick
March 10, 2009, 03:03:15 PM
I think this is one of the biggest matches Cavan have played in a couple of years (and every other match after this in the league will be bigger regardless of the result)
Currently the table stands like this

Div 3    P    W    D    L    Dif    Pts
R'common    3    2    0    1    10    4
Down    3    2    0    1    5    4
Tipperary    3    2    0    1    -3    4
Longford    3    1    1    1    1    3
Offaly    3    1    1    1    -8    3
Louth    3    1    0    2    9    2
Cavan    3    1    0    2    -3    2
Limerick    3    1    0    2    -9    2

It is unbelievably tight at the minute and concievably every team has a chance to go up and no one is really safe from relegation either.  If Cavan were to beat Limerick on Saturday and managed to improve their points difference (at east break even), they would be back in the running big time for promotion.

But while Limerick have been poor - whatever the excuse about Tipp catching Cavan on the hop, Limerick have no such excuse, they would have been warned - this isn't a certainity at all.  If Cavan played to their full potential a la the performance against Down, they "should" beat Limerick, however if they were to lose, we would almost have one foot in Div 4, especially if Louth win.

So it's all to play for really.

On the topic of Cavan's team, I really think Keating and Givney have to start.  The inclusion of Givney wouldn't cause that big of a problem, it'd be a straight swap for Mulvey who has had loads of chances at this level and never seem to really take it but of Lyng is fit, do you drop Lyng at centre forward to play Keating or is there room for both in the forwards??
I think Pierson could come back in for Larry, if he is back from injury but after that I'm not sure.....
