Well known Down club ref Mickey Cole collapsed and died during a Div 2 Football match tonight. Mickey was Mayor of Newry up until last week and was a member of the An Riocht club in Kilkeel, Co Down. At referees meetings he was always quick to make his views known. A great lad in so many ways.
May be rest in peace. Condolences to his family.

unbelievable news, the word filtered through to Burren with about five minutes left of tonights game.. the ground was very subdued afterwards.. it put everything into perspective.. mickey was a great character who never liked blowing his whistle during games.. he always liked to share a joke during matches even when he was being called everything... he will be sadly missed in Down Gaa circles

I would also just like to say how shocking it is to hear of the death of mickey cole. Although originally An Riocht he in the last number of years refereed as a Ballymartin referee. But there is more than those clubs will feel the shock of this, the whole mourne area is in shock he was an exellent councillor for the area evident from the amount of times he'd be in the mourne observer every week. We would of laughed in our house sayin 'how many times will mickey cole be in the mourne observer this week' But he was more than just a referee and a councillor, he was also a friendly face you'd see about 'the town' regularly and would have been full of craic about football, when driving you home in a taxi after a night out... He could also aggravate the hell out of you winding you up! He will be sadly missed by all in county down but he will be remembered for a very long time throughout mourne and I know he will be very sadly missed by his 3daughters and son who were very close indeed.

Was at the match last nite and was in shock to see it happen. No matter how much you love or hate referees it is not something you want to see happening to anybody.

was at the game also last night, something i hope to never experience again. very sad. collapsed on the pitch a few minutes before half time, was put in recovery position before physios and a nurse attended him. ambulance service arrived but could do nothing for him. tragic end to a great man. RIP
Tragic to lose the man. as a gael, i can't think of many better ways to go out than on the pitch
