good run out, braniff makes them tick, any other results out there?

Milltown what did you make of the diminuitive St Galls player confronting the umpire in the second half? ! Also where was the third member of the Mc Gourty clan?

Result from Division 4A
Na Magha (Derry city) 3 - 12
Strabane Shamrocks   1 - 5

Played in a gale and hail showers. Some decent hurling from both despite this.

i thought he was well within his rights to confront the cheating umpire ;D

only players who have paid their subs to the club can play, that third member has not paid and i don't think will be playing any day soon

The third member is "Shaws Road", CJ and Ciaran were both playing. Milltown, you did pick the ball off the ground though before you put the ball over !

good numbers, hopefully the application this year will be good. getting into div 1 will be our goal, but will be very tough considering Rossa and Ballycran and the rest will be pushing hard. away to Ballycran next sat night, they'll be strong.

three o'clock is just about the worse possible time they could have come up with for us to travel to paly ballygalget. leave dunloy at 12:30 to get through city traffic on a saturday and not home till 6:30 but still too early in the day to get a few beers in on bus
Title: Re: Ulster Hurling League
Post by: Lecale2 on April 10, 2008, 10:22:51 AM
If the Down teams do play they'll do so without their county players. With Down involved in a league semi final and South Down in the Div 4 Final there's no way county players will be risked.

I'd expect the games to be called off and re-fixed so don't book the bus yet Max.

Aye,
it was a good run out for some of our younger players as the county contingent were not considered, two of which are still minors and they weren't out of their depth. Dunloy were far from full strength as well and got off to a good start with a gift of a goal for Paddy Richmond who doesn't need an invitation at the best of times. Once we settled down we played our way into the game and held the lead through most of the second half with Dunloy levelling from a free  ??? with the last puck of the game.

I'd say our management are happy enough as we haven't done a huge amount of fitness yet and that'll improve as the weeks go by.

Armagh Cuchulaiins V Sarsfields Belfast

1-14 a piece

HAve to say from what i saw (2nd half) a draw was the fairest result.
Few of our players were off the pace, but who isnt this time of year.
Other than that good build up play to our goal.

our game against Ballycaste is to be fixed for wed night, obviously difficult for both teams to prepare for important league fixtures the following day when playing in the ulster league on a sat night.

which begs the question, is it not a better idea having the Ulster hurling played off before the leagues start? it makes sense ::)

I think we've a similar problem with our trip to Rossa on saturday evening and then senior and reserve on sunday up in Dunloy.

Our management doesn't seem to have issues playing in the Ulster league minus our county players like we did against Dunloy on saturday but not the night before an Antrim league game as that's the priority especially now with a cut throat division 1.

Crazy fixtures over the next few weeks. So much for using the UHL as a warm up for the County hurling leagues like it did last year. U21 Friday, UHL Saturday & Senior&Senior Res on Sunday. Typical feast or famine fixtures for the club hurler.

Why (if they wanted to free up time for county team preparations in June did they not arrange UHL matches then which could be played without County men?

At the minute the UHL is a hinderance rather than the useful competition was last year. As they say up the west...."it's a loada leeks"

I was at a meeting in early 2007 when the antrim clubs lambasted Antrim CCC for trying to fit their fixtures in around the ulster league  i.e they originally arranged antrim league matches for mid week as the UHL fixtures were out in advance.   div 1 clubs, l'giel and dunloy in particualr were very vocal in their request for sunday antrim league games (which is understandable) and they were quite aware that this would mean matches on both sat on sun but thats they requested.

as a result of this clubs are fast losing interest in the ulster league. it was fine in the first year when clubs could not rely on regular antrim league fixture but this has largely changed in my vioew thanks to a no-nonsense approach from antrims CCC. not everyone will like their style but its the only style to get the message across to clubs who constantly want to buck the system.   rossa footballers found this out ot their cost last year.

i think there is only room for one set of leagues  long term

we beat Banagher on saturday afternoon with the most depleted squad ever assembled. we even had a 52 year old on, magic......

game was changed to an earlier time and a lot of lads could not make it.

game was won when a hopefull punt into the box was diverted into the net by the keeper (who had an outstanding game) and we won by 1

Dunloy 1-16 to Cushendall 1-13

Cushendall missing a few McNaughton & McManus, as were dunloy Ally, Molloy, Dick (came on in second half) & Quinn.

Competitive game but no real flow or pattern, alot, alot of frees.  Dunloy won because of a fortunate goal late in the game and will be anything but happy with the performance especially in the first half where we trailed by 5.

Cushendall doing as expected and stating to come good at the right time.  Given the draw maybe they feel they only need to really peak for a final (though the Johnies might have something to day about that), they will again be a serious team to contend with this year

Cuchulainns V Randalstown is on Wed night in Sarsfields,

They beat us last year by 2 points so hoping to turn the tables on them.

Does big Magill still play for them, he certainly celebrated Armaghs ulster title in style ;)

Ballygalget vrs Dunloy final scheduled for Casement next week. I think it might be the wednesday or friday night.

I believe the ref in the Ballygalget vrs Glenariff had difficulty counting the score but got it sorted in the end..

ulster hurling league shite, no other teams apart from antrim teams  would or should i say can play . A harsh reailty from the 6 county format.  :o
Should that not be nine counties milltown. As far as I remember Burt and Setanta did well in it last year. Not a lot coming from Cavan admittedly but some of the Monagan teams but in an effort.

Never was a massive fan of the UHL, but I think on reflection that teams (ones with large panels anyway) can really benefit from the extra games that it provides. At least the final was played at a better time of the year than last year, but if two Antrim clubs had still to meet each other in the championship then it wouldn't have happened

What about the other counties? Whats your take?

Title: Re: Ulster Hurling League
Post by: Lecale2 on September 04, 2008, 10:49:41 AM
The Antrim leagues seem to be running fairly smoothly this year so clubs playing in Antrim have regular games. Outside of Antrim the rest of Ulster is disaster. In Down the footballers have played around 18 league games while the hurlers have played 9.  That's not near enough to keep lads interested so the Ulster league helps fill the gap.

Surely they're carrying a sizeable squad of lads some of whom may have trained all winter and would be looking to step up a grade.

The UHL is a good standard to trying young lads out in

looking forward to the start of the UHL this year, we have been dropped down a league, we only won two games last year and although we got to the 1/4 finals one year after a draw with Johnnycool's team (missed a one on one with Clarke that day >:() we found it hard to field most days.

If that was the drawn game in Ballygalget you're talking about, it wasn't Graham in nets, it was a much more handsome gentleman who had to step in at the last minute   ;)

fair enough, the big man was hurting after that. the glory was stolen from him ;D ;D ;D
na it was the replay back at our pitch :(

talking about that first drawn match. we should have got a penalty in the last minute when our fullforward was hauled to the ground

Was that after his 7th or 8th step, I'd lost count by then  :D

It'd be saved anyway  ;D

Lisbellaw pulled out of our (Eoghan Rua) tie, think it was because of a funeral, thereby denying Ulster hurling a clash of the giants. Pity. Have had decent numbers out at training after last years farce and was really looking forward to a game  :(.

Surprised to see Armoy get stuffed so much by Rasharkin! Must be that well tanned fella with the politically correct name pulling the strings...

is this due to the Antrim leagues starting?  Cushendall are playing Ballygalget and a host of north Antrim teams are playing on the Sunday. cant stress enough about the Ulster hurling league being played earlier in the year. once it starts to infringe on the all County leagues then it does not get the proper attention it deserves.

which games have been called off?

Not that too many would have been keeping an eye out for the score but the Ballela v Ballymena match has been called off due to a death in our parish and not Ballymenas participation in the Antrim league.

How many games were played tonight? This was meant to be the last round of league matches and the quarter finalists should be known.

Ballygalget beat Rossa
Lamh Dreag beat Newry Shamrocks

Div 5
Carrickmacross beat Bredagh IIs 17 -3.
Ardoyne beat Carryduff
Davitts beat Castlewellan

Any other results?

Dunloy beat Keady by 10 points 3-14 to 3-24. Very open entertaining game.

On a disappointing note. Our boys made the 4 hour round trip, to change in a store room, then no showers after the game. To top it off they didn't even offer a cup of tea and a sandwich. One Keady official was overheard saying "sure they won't starve". They should be ashamed of themselves for treating a travelling club with such disregard.  >:(

One thing the other Ulster teams have proved though that there is very little difference when it comes to Division 2 and on levels.  We're all roughly at the same standard - discuss

Always thought the fact that the strong hurling clubs outside of Antrim (in Derry at least) were often top football clubs was an important factor. At a certain level higher work rate, pressure and basic simple hurling can bring you through against mid level hurlers. Not enough for the higher echelons though - nor pretty to watch!

Have to agree with the sentiments Skull.  One thing i noticed definately is the cheek of these non-Antrim teams - seem to have a real chip on their shoulders - very angry indeed!!  That Middleton team we played (who were very able by the way and the better team on the day) couldn't smile, some wouldn't shake hands after the match and all their subs wanted to rip the head of some of our boys from the sidelines - what's all that about.  Noticed it a few times against non-antrim teams.  It's alright lads, we all love hurling as much - no need for the chips!!

Milltown - that Banagher team are a very nifty side and they'll take some beating!!  How did you's go in your first match of the antrim league?  Our match v Clooney Gaels was called off - calling it a mud bath would be generous!!

beat Shane O'Neills, bit of a lottery, the wind was the difference and we won the toss and scored well. think Glenarm could have made inroads but went for goal far to early. play Gaels on Sunday. expect tough game

screen Were playing St Galls at the weekend At Our pitch and afterwards the Travelling team were taken into the club and they all got Hot food from our club.  This is the way teams should treat each other as after all, we are all trying to promote the game and make our teams better. What you describe here is pretty common from the Armagh clubs and Their county team behaves much the same.

Keady and Middletown used to look to play us in friendlies every year and the verbals from the players, Subs, supporters and even management was a joke and relentless at times and once you started to pull away from them it got  even worse. Always hated playing them for this reason, but also enjoyed giving them a good beating every time for the same reason.  Last year Our reserves Played Armagh Cuchulainns senior team in a friendly and it was much the same. I do agree they seem to have a massive chip on their shoulders bout something.

Its our last game this sat v banagher if we win it leaves us on 8 points. There seems to be a good few fixtures weren't played it seems to happen alot in UHL. UHL are pretty strict with the dateline date so most of them don't ever get refixed. ( which is good i think). It increases our chances of a semi final spot. ;D ;D

To be honest think the managment are taking the UHL as a build up to the League and championship, as i suspose alot of teams do.

Screen reserves were beat by a point by Cúchulainns...although they did seem to have a fair few missing.  You seem to be very critical of the Armagh clubs just because they bring a bit of physicality to the game...I must say, we have played the top three Armagh clubs over the past few years in the Ulster League and we have lost more than we have won....but the games have always been very good because you knew you were getting a good tough game before you started!!  Maybe the Armagh clubs should pack it in and allow the Antim snobs to work away on their own in the Leinster Club League!!

i see that the league deadline is this sunday 31 May.  Anyone know if the banagher v Screen game went ahead in the derry league i could see them playing that game for the two leagues winner takes all ??

We have one game left v Banagher don't know if it wil be played.  wonder who will be the semi finalists. i would say that gort and middletown are through and Cúchulainns too and its between us and screen.

Ballycran beat Portaferry by 1-7 to 1-6 on a god awful night for hurling on friday night.

The driving rain throughout ruined whatever hurling was in the game as lads couldn't hold their hurls or feeting to strike the ball with any degree of consistencey

The down side for the Crans is that allegedly they lost Simon Wilson to a straight red after the game for 'abusing an official' which is rightly being punished a lot more by referee's.

I suppose they'll now play Rossa in the final in the coming weeks.

Castlewellan beat Clonduff on Monday night in the Ulster League Div 5 semi final replay 1:8 1:12 in Piarc Eisler after a 3:8 0:17 draw in the first game and they now go on to face Cappagh Gaels from Tyrone in the final on Sept 5th in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh. Possibly the Ulster Council could organise a neutral referee for the final after a diabolical performance in the semi

UL Division 4 Final

Ballela 4.10 Na Magha 3.6

The game was played in Creggan on Saturday evening and with the aid of a strong breeze we(Ballela) lead 2.7 to 0.3 at half time. Na Magha started the second half strongly and reduced the lead to 5points. We then had to play out the last 20min with 14 men but held firm.

Cheers lads, nothing too excessive in the drinking stakes as we're for Dublin and the St Judes 7's/All Ire/a players stag this weekend which should be eventful.

Well done Rossa. They'll take great heart from that title and deserve great credit considering the sides they beat to win it. Don't you think Queenie?  :P

Was there many Gaels at it?

Big enough crowd for a Wednesday night, match didn't really get going with both teams matching eachother in the first half. They went in level at the break. Ballycran seemed to be taking all their chances, on the other hand, Rossa were making chances but missing a lot of scoreable ones. Jim Connolly got two goals in the first half and Ballycrans goal was the first score of the game, a rebound from a 20m free. Conor Woods was excellent in midfield and would have been man of the match until that boy fired in the goal at the end, good finish.
