As it's GAAboard tradition to talk music lists round this time of year, what do people think are the albums of the decade so far, those that will stand the test of time? No compilations! I'll throw out three- Bruce's "The Rising", Arcade Fire's "Funeral" (I know it's clichéd these days to call it an album of the decade, but it really is still sensational and Richard Hawley's "Cole's Corner". Beautiful stuff altogether!
Vengaboys - Lets Party
Black Mirror is better than Funeral .
Don't forget
All That You Can't Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
Jeep
Killers Sam's town
Demon Days
Life for rent while not my cup of tea was a very strong album
American Idiot ?
Far to many to pick a best
Brittney Spears' latest is decent.
Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
William Shatner - Shatner Face, for the title alone.
Oh fcuk....I haven't got a clue.
Nothing in this decade is doing it for me that I have heard. Think I'm getting on...
Well and truly stuck in the past :-\
Daniel O'Donnell & Mary Duff
Together Again
Brian Wilson - Smile
Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around
Ash - Free All Angels
Levon Helm - Dirt Farmer
Matchbox Twenty - Mad Season
Kasabian - Kasabian
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot chilli peppers
American Idiot - Greenday
Costello Music - The Fratellis
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
Mothership (because it brings them to a new generation)
Borderline this decade but it's the best album ever anyways, Air - Moon Safari. And f**k the no compilation rule Lost in Translation soundtrack is a close second.
I havent heard the Boss' new album Magic, but by all accounts is amazing, better than The Rising or Devils and Dust. But if that were true could have a claim to that title. Im really finding it hard to pick an album due to the current nature of the music business. Based on trends, with bands of a particular genre getting signed up and dissapearing very quickly, not producing any real quality or given a chance to develop musically.
Anyway....
My favourite albums of this decade:
Mastodon(2): Blood Mountain & Leviathan
The Answer: Rise
Era Vulgaris: What Stirs Within
Hard to pick one but itd probably come from (though im bound to be forgetting something
Arcade Fire - Funeral (edges out neon bible for me)
Destroyer - Destroyers Rubies
Okkervil river - black sheep boy
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
The White Stripes - De Stijl
The Wrens - Meadowlands

The Album of the 80s, The Joshua Tree, has just been re-released all be it a remastered version with some previously unreleased material. Maybe it is a cynical marketing excercise by U2, but it is definitely one for any music collection.
It seems to be a trend now, redoing classic albums on a 20th or 30th anniversary.
Look out for a Darkness on the Edge of Town package (remastered album, concert film, maybe a documentary) next year. He did it with Born to Run two years ago, so hopefully Springsteen will give Darkness the works as well.

I have it and it's top notch. I've never been a real Springsteen aficionado, but this album seems to be like a distillation of the essence of his talent - some great anthemic songs and good melodies. It reminded me a bit of Dylan's Time Out of Mind, not that the content is similar, but in the way it made you feel "I didn't think he had that in him".
Im going to have to give this springsteen fellow a listen - he seems to get touted on here as being fantastic.
No 1 = Green day - American Idiot
No 2 = The Killers - Sams Town
Cant think of any others I would say are "great" so far this decade.
If I'm right David Grays white ladder is late 90's. If not, add that in.

That episode expresses my feelings perfectly on "Remastering stuff"
This is always a tough one to pick no matter if it's a decade or ever, here's my two cent:
Arcade Fire: Funeral
Modest Mouse: Good News for people who love bad news
The Decemberists: Picaresque
Kings of Leon: Youth and Young manhood
The Go Team: Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Sufjan Stevens: Illonis

I think the praise for Magic had been a bit over the top. It is a good album and it contains some super songs but one of the reviews I've read said it was his best since Born to Run which is obsurd. It is good to hear him in good form though.

Id have Modest Mouse - the moon and antartica ahead of Good news.
Sufjan Stevens illinois is a good shout, possibly plumb for seven swans as an alternative - like them both.
Carry on up the Charts - Beautiful South released in the 90's . Is it 1 in 7 households is reckoned to own a copy . I msut confess to owning a copy . Heard 36D the other night on the radio very unusual to hear that song on the radio .
Off the top of my head the best records of this decade:
Kid A – Radiohead
Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven – Godspeed You Black Emperor!
You Forgot It In People – Broken Social Scene
Twin Cinema – The New Pornographers
Sound Of Sliver – LCD Soundsystem
Funeral – Arcade Fire
The Meadowlands – The Wrens
Turn On The Bright Lights – Interpol
Kill The Moonlight – Spoon
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot – Wilco
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus – Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

I must be getting old, I havent heard of most of the above :(
you must be, but for all you old fogies, An Fhairche Abu put the album name first just to confuse yous
sure it just depends what you are into,
I like the indie, and most of the bands i listed would be american/canadian and woulddnt get a lot of airplay over here
the one album that has popped up the most has been funeral
went to see them in the big top there recently, totally awesome.
see they have a list on amazon with many of the above mentioned.
http://www.amazon.com/BEST-ALBUMS-OF-THIS-DECADE/lm/89Q2PR3M660L
also i know its not cool amongst the musos anymore but the artctic monkeys first album is class.
they had the misfirtune of becoming popular and so will be shunned by the indie kids.
saw another list there of top 50 and i never heard of a lot of them and im fairly knowledgeable on my tunes. if they were that good they would be more popular surely.
Quoteif they were that good they would be more popular surely.
Have you heard some of the stuff thats popular?
Quoteif they were that good they would be more popular surely.
Have to say I would seriously question that statement, sales (if buy the most popular you mean the most actual units shifted) do not reflect the true worth of a musician or band.
Most people do not have the patience to let a piece of music (much less a coherent album) unfold anymore, if after 30 seconds they don't like it, they hit skip and move onto the next track.
Unfortunately most people do not want to hear anything that's trying to be new, different or interesting, they want something that is already familiar to them, "safe" music. This leads to the generic, samey music that is clogging up the airwaves.
Call it music snobbery or whatever but most people honestly don't have a clue simply because that haven't listened to enough music, the best opinion is always an informed opinion.
The music selling the most in the charts is typically bland, reality TV show pap, Westlife etc. it's music for people who don't have very much actual interest in music. Witness the rush of record companies to sign soundalikes of any band that becomes successful or latch onto the latest fad for short term profit, the slew of rubbish Arctic Monkeys-lite bands that were signed in their wake, the Simon Cowell approach of signing TV stars and novelty acts to make a quick cash in; why people buy this crap is beyond me but they do.
Popularity of an artist rarely has much in common with the quality of that artist anymore IMO.
Great points fellas. The quality of an album can be found in your desire to listen to it straight through the very first time someone puts it into your hand. You buy it and stick it in the car. You drive 20 minutes home and sit outside the house listening to the next 40 minutes, because it has you by the gonads.
I was skeptical as f**k when the buddy gave me costello music by the fratellis' "Its from the itunes ad" says he. "f**k that"says I. Album blew my mind for a three piece band.
