are there any things or buildings of interest near you that you'd love to see in action again. some time ago there was talk of reopening the newry to portadown canal. england is plastered in canals i think they're fascinating and are a great tourist attraction. surely we could have just one. imagine if you could travel from from coalisland right through to newry by boat. also there used to be a train from newry to warrenpoint imagine a small tram shuttling back and forth maybe just in the summer months.. maybe theres something completely different you'd like to see. i hear there are some new old buildings at the ulster american folk park definitely a good day out
id like to see a railway link to half the north restored. Id like to see the blocking of the A5 development which is a modern day equivalent of the railways removal stopped. Our politicians should not be allowed to interfere with making transport amenable or safer. It becomes a sectarian or vote winning decision.
Rant over..

Agree about the canal. I have lived close to it all my life and know the history. Would be a great leisure resource now.....however in the 80s the brainy folks in the Newry Council and a host of other govt agencies decided to build fixed bridges without the capacity to let boats through from the Albert Basin northwards. I have walked the towpath many times and it's a disgrace the way the canal is now.

there was also a branch of that canal that went to clones.. that would be handy as well ;)
Lawnseed I am sure you have seen the petitions around Armagh to re-establish the train line from Belfast (via Portadown) to Armagh. Really don't see it coming off or any real need for it.

toney thats not the kind of thing i had in mind unless your thinking of a steam train. any time i pass portadown station the train is empty so as you say there no demand for that service. wouldnt you like to see canal barges passing through middletown? travelling along side the armagh monaghan road. jeez i think it'd be fantastic.

What time of night does that be at? The P'down-Belfast commuter line is probably the busiest on the network. Personally would like to see more investment in public transport, specifically railways. Too expensive though. Cost millions upon millions just to lay track, never mind get the land required, build bridges, tunnels, stations etc.
Stormont. (oh wait....)

The thing about railways is they're treated differently from roads, unfairly IMHO. The tracks and signalling alone are not the only thing factored into the cost, they also include stations and rolling stock when quoting the price. But when quoting the price of roads they only quote the price of the road itself, not the cost of any vehicles running on it. So trains are expected to be "economical", and unbelievably they're expected to make a profit in Britain. Meanwhile, nobody expects the Highways Agency to make a profit, and everyone accepts that car ownership is a loss-making endeavour. If a more sensible approach were taken to public transport then it'd be great to see the railway line restored to Armagh.
When I lived in England I found it very easy to live without a car, you could get just about anywhere in the city and anywhere in the country by train. Even small villages in the middle of Yorkshire had train stops and were accessible from the national railway network, and that's after the infamous Beeching Axe. Imagine what it was like before, the country must have been completely riddled with railways.
Canals would be a great catch for tourists all right. I thought the Newry Canal was opened again, or is that just the towpath? Shame about the low bridges if that's the problem. I wonder if it's possible to get around that with locks, surely you could lower the stretch of water that goes under the bridge?
Good public transport especially rail should be a right and is beneficial to any thriving economy as people go places, eg matches, and spend. No matter what way you look at it, the Irish are one of the dumbest races on earth. Destroying the rail system instead of havng the foresight to build on it is but one example. Ghosts estates and general bad planning all come from the same dark hole in Paddys brilliant mind. We are a horrid lot altogether.

There is / was some push by Waterways Ireland to re-open the Ulster canal but again it was money promised by the Irish Government so it will not be happening any time soon.

keady steam bakery. the best bread you ever tasted. better than the dough you get now. i remember tearing into fresh loaf with a good lump of fanevalley butter and the bread still warm just out of the bread van. there are several pale imitations on the go.. but you cant ask "is keady on your cart?" a reference to the bread vans/carts

I too would like to see the Newry-Portadown Canal restored, as I basicallly grew up in it, fished in it, paddled in it, and fell in it. Getting it back in shaped would be a huge expense. Lots of Humpback bridges were replaced with flat bridges and some farmers even removed the bank so as to maximise their acreage. If it was restored I would definitely take a barge from east to west.
I'd also like to restore the age of innocence, and respect for authority.

I hate seeing men wearing hats or caps inside the Church. It goes against my upbringing (some might call it something else). But to me it shows disrespect.
