Title: Best Place to Stay in Omagh?
Post by: catchandkick on February 18, 2013, 08:29:50 AM
Potentially visiting with a gang for the relegation decider that will be Throne Kerry in Omagh on April 7th! Where would be the best place to stay in Omagh? Cheap kind of hotel would be what's required.

Would it be worth staying there on the Friday night or would be as well to head out in Belfast on the Friday and then Omagh on the Saturday night?

Omagh not blessed with great hotels. Your best bet might be the Silver birches. Walkable to the pitch and only a 3 minute taxi drive to town. Rooms would be cheap enough.

Forget about Omagh for a night out on a Friday night. It's usually dead!!

Silver Birches, is a handy enough hotel, near to Healy Park. There's also another hotel, the Mellon Country Inn, but it's a good bit out of the town.

Spends on what you like for a night out catchandkick.

There's Main Street Omagh, which is in the centre of the town. A few bars in it and a nightclub.

There's also Next Door @ Bogans, which usually has good live music.

Stay in Kelly's Inn on the road to Omagh where you can take a walk up the hill and see the almost-complete Garvaghey complex.  ;D

Actually don't, as there's nothing round there.  What direction are you coming?  Belfast is a bit out of the way for Omagh.

Not a chance. Shot down there, too many times, by too many women. Bad memories.  ;D

Stay in Derry, Donegal or Armagh and limit your time in Tyrone to match day.

Ah don't say that, Mrs Ziggy would be most disappointed. I've had many a good night in Kelly's, a lot of genuine GAA folk around there. Farley's Bar just up the road in Beragh is another good spot for a few pints and a bit of banter. (Leastwhile it was a few years back.)

Ah no offence meant - but this group is considering Belfast on the Friday night rather than Omagh - I'm imagining they have a bigger night in mind than a few pints in a local bar in rural Tyrone.

McGurk's Bar in Omagh is a good spot.

McGurks is no longer "McGurks". It certainly was a good spot, with Arthur being an absolute gent.

I'm assuming you are coming from the south.  Is Enniskillen be far from Omagh and a possible detination?  Maybe Enniskillen is crap too?

Enniskillen about 25-30 mins away. Most people from Enniskillen direction are heading up to Omagh at the weekends these days. While Enniskillen has a few decent bars it doesn't really have one big one, and no nightclubs. You'd be safer sticking with Omagh and heading to either Sallys or Main street (Collection of pubs and clubs).

No, closed down 10-15 years ago.  It is now a commercial shopping and entertainment street,  developed and privately owned by a local business man.

Thanks for replies folks. Would be a gang of lads. Hadn't thought of Derry, is it a good spot at night?

Reckon it will probably be Belfast (or Derry maybe) on the Friday night, will be coming from south via Dublin so Derry would be a longer trek.

And then Omagh on the Saturday night.

Would Belfast be good on a Friday night?

Derry would be a longer spin on the Friday, but Belfast will be a longer spin to Omagh on the Saturday -- and the Maiden City is good for a night out.

Nowhere up north is particularly great on a Friday night - a strange phenomenon but Sat nights alway busier.

That said, I am out in Belfast regularly on Fridays and can always find plenty of craic so there would be no shortage of places to visit!

Brave fellas alright with those comments! He's done more to tidy up and improve Omagh over the years than you'd know. You remember the Royal Arms, and the mews? Stinking of pish with drunks in the gutter? Main street is a massive improvement to the town center, and credit where it's due. People have been talking out the sides of their gobs about him since long before my time and they will long after it. Begrudgery at its finest.

Cubs (lads) and a cutty (girl) pronounced cut-dee would be the most used at home, wouldn't have thought of it as just a East Tyrone thing, older generation would say it alot at home.

I've heard it/them used from Ballygawley to Donemana. I was just going to ask the question, do the younger generation still use these expressions? It would be a shame to let them die out.

Aye a bit, its subconscious use, when I'm at home i'd utter it as much as anyone, when i'm in the city I wouldn't say it at all. Those who don't travel or follow Americanisation would use it more but as more and more people grow up with a feed of american culture, i'd say it will be lost.

She may have thought you said Caddy instead of Cutty. That would have got you a slap and a reputation.
