But is it a question of people opposing everything the DUP says without properly considering if there's any merit in anything they say?

No. It's a matter of the DUP being wrong on just about every moral issue and being deservedly ridiculed for it.
If they cant convince you with moral arguments they will try to pass a law that leaves no choice.
