Title: Help needed to identify this old ONEILLS SHIRT
Post by: irelandshirts on January 31, 2012, 10:05:02 AM
Hi i am new to the forum and am useless on computers!I am looking for information on an old O Neills shirt i have from the late 1970s/early-mid 1980s.

I cant seem to post an image of it here and i wonder if anyone can help me with getting the image uploaded so i can get help to identify which GAA club it may have come from?

Its unusual in that it has a full shamrock crest so possibly came from a club with SHAMROCKS in their name?

If anyone can help id reallty appreciate it.

                    Thanks

                   eddie

Ballinderry, Loughgiel, Ballyhale, Newry? Ballyhale has only one big shamrock, the other 3 have 3 or 4 shamrocks

Baltinglass Gaa Club seem to be very close to it.A wise man told me that at the start!!

They won the All Ireland Club in 1990Wearing a shirt very close to it.

I think you're right AQMP

The crest on that shirt is the exact same as this one.....

Same crest as Baltinglas in 1990, a co-worker was sub goalie that day but he is on paternity leave so can't confirm.

If it has short sleeves it would put me in mind of a soccer jersey.  Don't remember GAA shirts with short sleeve until the mid 80's.

It does look very much like it could be a RoI soccer jersey, the crest is the exact same and the watermark says irelandsoccershirts.com (which I guess irelandshirts is from)

Have you tried taking the image and dragging it into a google image search?

I saw the dubs v kerry wearing short sleeved shirts in the late 1970s i think. The materiel is very fine on the shirt and doesent remind me of the old gaa shirts designed to last a 1000 washes and nuclear winters!!

The water mark is just from my website.

No luck on that other site then, with a number 12 I'd nearly assume that its a gaa top, not that it rules out soccer though

Yeah, but they don't have the stripes going down it. Good luck with your search anyway

Isn't that the old Republic of Ireland shirt from the late 70s or early 80s? They introduced a retro version around the 2010 World Cup.

The 'Guaranteed Irish' symbol means it is almost certainly a GAA jersey.  If it was a soccer shirt it would have an 'O'Neill's' on the symbol.  Look at the Liam Brady photograph.
