No surprise there-  what the Americans want, the Americans usually get.

He is accused of rape, there must be some evidence to back this up.

They want him extradited to Sweden? I'd have more faith in them to give him a fair trial than many other people seem to be

With the Swedish PM getting involved and the prosecutor going to extraordinary unprecedented lengths, breaking all known procedures to make a case, which at best is pathetically weak - it does not augur well for Assange in a Swedish court.
This is political case which has all the hallmarks of a stitch up.

Did anyone see that BBC program on  Assange/Wikileaks by that pompous príck John Humphrys?

John Sweeney, wasn't it? If it's the same one I saw, it was either a well executed hatchet job or Assange is a bit of a creep.

Sorry,  there are so many many pompous prícks at the BBC,  I do get confused.
Sweeney indeed did the Panorama program and Humphrys did an interview of sorts  which I heard on BBC radio.
Although anybody who would do something like Assange did, can expect x-ray scrutiny and slander, it is curious to witness the bastions of supposed British reporter intelligentsia  like Sweeney and Humphrys suspend all journalistic credibility by ignoring the basic tenets of justice and in their stead, inject their crude sexual interest with innuendo overtones of sexual abuse.
BBC fox reporters.

Disgusting decision.  Just three days after the Aussie Foreign Minister , ex-PM, Kevin Rudd was lauding the Arab nations for standing up and demanding truth, so the USA has crucified someone who dared to challenge the USA's version of truth.

My Swedish friends are sickened by the actions of their PM who took it upon himself to personally see that his puppet masters in the pentagon got what they wanted.

It appears highly likely Assange will be extradited to the USA to face treason charges.  So much for democracy and for all of you young Irish who still hear the lament-like bleat of "go west", well save your energy.  It has one of the most government-controlled media in the world.  Freedom of Speech my arse.  Cue TO...

My understanding of the situation vis a vis a European arrest warrant which is what this was only entitles extradition of Assange to stand trial in Sweden and potentially imprisonment there, it wouldnt allow for extradition to the US without first going back in front of the Secretary of State and the UK courts.  Not saying the US arent behind this but why not seek extradition directly if they wished to get him themselves.  Of course i have been known to be completely wrong on these things

Afaiu it,  the US authorities have the leaker in custody and the rumour mills  are saying that they will batter him into making a confession implicating Assange as being a co-conspirator.
That might mean they have a prima facie case and maybe that's all they need to get him deported.

What would be in Sweden's interests about allowing the Pentagon to be their 'puppet masters'?

Sweden was known for its steadfast neutrality.  However a right-wing government came to power a few years ago and the country has lost that stand. (acc. to my Swedish mates here in Oz).

It is being suggested that Assange is being sidetracked so-to-speak to Sweden to give the USA time to conjour some new legislation under which it will seek extradition from Sweden.  that's what I've read...open to alternatives.

C'mon TO, you're a bit late in getting your defence of the Step-Motherland in

So what if the goverment is right-wing? The rule of law still applies in Sweden and the case will be decided on its merits. If you have any evidence that the legal system has been corrupted in Sweden in the manner of (say) Venezuela with the judiciary stuffed with government yes-men then I'm all ears

As I say I dont think he can be directly extradited from Sweden he will have to go through the UK again first.  As a result I dont see the point in the US trying to force him to Sweden

Something I don't understand - how can the US charge a foreign national with treason? I thought treason was treachery against ones state. In what way does a Swedish or Australian citizen (I'm not sure which Assange is) have a duty to the USA or a responsibility not to divulge its state secrets? I can understand the concept of treason as a breach of the contract between a citizen and his state - the state provides protection for the citizen. In return, the citizen undertakes a duty to his fellow citizens that includes an undertaking not to divulge state secrets to foreigners. I cannot see how it would be tenable for Sweden to extradite a citizen (if that's what Assange is) to a foreign state on a charge of treason against that state that is not his own.

You are assuming the charge would be treason.
The US could make a charge of espionage stick, with a bit of contrivance.
The US only need to bring a charge and he would be extradited to face that charge. They don't have to prove that charge before extradition.
Just as the Swedish prosecutor can break all known procedures, good practice and reinterpret the law in order to get Assange to Sweden.

There will be a shítstorm of media focus on this in Sweden if Assange's appeal fails.

That's true. The late night post was triggered by listening to some pundit on TV (can't remember who) talking about a potential charge of treason against Assange.

Julian Assange will get his own TV show now on RT. Will be interesting. I have watched RT, it's quite good and brings a much more in depth look in most cases than BBC or any of the others. However, I don't know much about about its back story but some claim its "news" bought and paid for by Mr. Putin.
