I am amazed that with the winter games just three weeks away there is not a word about them anywhere. I love the winter games, I enjoy them a whole lot more than the summer games.
My favourite sport in the games is the bobsleigh and I also enjoy the downhill racing and the hockey.
What sports do you like best at the winter games?
i love watching the ski jumping myself, or any of the snow boarding events, especially the half pipe or the big air events!
Downhill racing - managed to watch a French women's qualifying event there last wk in France (strangely). The speed and finesse is amazing.
I love the ice skating events too.
Curling of course :P

Think it was the last olympics in the womens downhill snowboarding (4 of them race against other). Some american chick was miles ahead and about to win gold when she tried to showboat of the last jump with a hold. Of course she fell and 2nd place came through to win gold, not sure where she even finished.
That would live with you for life or at least 4 years until you get a chance to redeem yourself

Any Irish entrants? Is racing Twin Cams on icey back-roads an accredited event?
I believe there's 3 Irish entrants in this years Olympics.
The country here is raring to go - can't move for Olympics merchandise - even though it's the same distance from Toronto here that Ireland is.
Anything but gold in the mens and womens hockey will doom these games a failure in the eyes of Canadians
Turns out we've 6 entrants across 4 sports
And the Aussies are acting the maggot >:(

Ireland's women's bobsleigh team could lose their place at the Winter Olympics in the courtroom after Australia submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport insisting that they were the rightful recipients of a starting spot in Vancouver.
The Irish team, comprising of Claire Bergin, Aoife Hoey and Leona Byrne, are currently in Whistler training for the main event which is scheduled to take place on 23 & 24 February.
Hoey and Bergin captured the 20th and final spot in qualifying, outperforming their Australian counterparts in the process.
The Austrian team then withdrew from the Games and Ireland were bumped up to 19th in the rankings, with Japan offered the now vacant 20th spot as the top team in Asia.
This has caused consternation in the Australian Olympic movement as officials argue that they should be offered a similar path to Vancouver as the number one country in Oceania.
'I'm happy about the hearing,' said Fiona De Jong, director of sport for the Australian Olympic Committee.
'We were able to make our point, which I feel is pretty strong. There are five rings in the Olympic insignia and the continent of Oceania deserves to be there. These girls are the best in Oceania.'
Olympic Council of Ireland president Patrick Hickey is appalled that Ireland could yet be cast aside by CAS.
'It would be outrageous if those girls were stripped of their accreditation and sent back home to Ireland,' Olympic Council of Ireland president Patrick Hickey told Around the Rings, an Olympic publication, before the hearing.
'We're already suffering from the football (case) of Thierry Henry scoring a goal with his hand and eliminating us from the World Cup finals. And if something like this happened it would be catastrophe altogether.'
A decision is expected later today.
Good news on this. The Irish team are allowed to compete as well as the Australian team. Would have been a crime had Ireland been made make way for Australia after qualifying ahead of them.
Bit of a problem lads. They are having to import snow to Calgary. Hard to ski downhill on grass.
Could be more fun though. :D

If Pat Hickey is going into any kind of hearing he may as well get his facts straight...twas Gallas who scored the goal agin Ireland!!
Des Cahill is reporting this morning that our bobsleighing women are not in the clear at all. Apparently, the CAS ruled in favour of Australia's protest (supported by crying would-be-participants at the hearing) that they should be the 20th team and only "strongly recommended" that Ireland be included as a 21st team.
But now the Brazilians (I jest not) want the Irish out and themselves in, because of some other alleged irregularity, so there may have to be another hearing.
I'm firmly on board the Winter Olympics bandwagon now. Can't wait for the curling.
I love the bobsleigh having seen the event at the Nagano Olympics. The speeds are unreal. Also the ski-jump. And I hope we have another Herman Meier to shout about. What a man.
Bloody Brazilian woman are complaining about our girls now >:(
I see. that a participant in the Luge has died today after a high speed crash in training. There seems to be major concerns about safety at this track.
Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili dies after crash (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/vancouver_2010/luge/8513595.stm)
Not a very clever design in terms of those taking part in the luge. No padding or any type of protection.
The video of his fatal run is up on NBC's Olympics website. Shows a close-up of the poor lad pulling down his visor, getting set and then whole run, including the crash. He didn't have a hope as he crashed head-first into a big metal or concrete column along the side of the track supporting the roof. I'm as guilty as anyone as macabre curiosity got the better of me, but shouldn't NBC take the footage showing the last 40 seconds of someone's life down?
I've just been watching the opening ceremony. Hats of to the Canadians...fantastic show. Great mix of music, dance, lighting, culture. K.D. Lang is some performer and Sarah McLaughlin (must be a Derry influence in there somewhere) was superb. But yer man with the fiddle and the kilt doing his bit....

Did anyone watch the board cross event?? Amazing stuff very exciting and hugely dangerous you'd have to be crazy to take part in it! I love the way they find new more exciting events all the time.
That was cracking Loopy - shaping up to be a great event so far
The board cross isn't a new event, as far as I can remember it was at the past two games! Its a complete cracker though! 1 of the most exciting sports to watch! Will never forget the name Lindsey Jacobellis after the last games and her fall! Its on the BBC website-check it out! As for the Loopiness, did I miss something last nite?
The board cross is a superb spectator sport that keeps you on edge until the very end which I find hugely entertaining, the winter Olympics is packed with these great sports, the mens downhill was so close it was unreal, the BBC showed the top 5 (shadows) going down with winner and they all crossed the line at the same time. The speed skating also a fav of mine.
Any more official word on our Bobsleigh team
Canada's 2nd gold - womens snowcross
Looking forward to see Canada in the Mens Hockey later, should be a good atmosphere!
wouldn't expect much of a game though - I'd say they'll get at least ten goals
I was watching the speed-skating sprints last night - wow! :o

CAS panel rejects Brazilian bid to oust Irish
(UKPA) – 3 days ago
A Court of Arbitration for Sport panel has dismissed an application from Brazil to replace Ireland's women's bobsleigh team at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
The application, made by the Brazilian Ice Sports Federation (CBDG), requested that the Brazilian women's bobsleigh team be admitted in place of the Irish team, whose place had previously been put in jeopardy by a challenge from Australia.
The CAS panel rejected the CBDG's application and also dismissed a request that the panel should direct the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to offer an additional place in the women's bobsleigh event.
On Tuesday, CAS suggested to the IOC and VANOC, the local organising committee, that an Australian women's bob team should be included in the Games and recommended the inclusion of a 21st team.
On Wednesday, the IOC ratified CAS' recommendations, including both the Australian and Irish bobsleigh teams in the women's two-man bobsleigh competition.
Aoife Hoey, Ireland's flagbearer in the opening ceremony, and Claire Bergin will be relieved that the Brazilian challenge was rejected by CAS.
Olympic Council of Ireland chief executive Stephen Martin said: "Thanks to the support of the Olympic Council president Pat Hickey and the OCI legal advisor Giles Kennedy, Aoife and Claire's right to compete in the Games has been protected.
"It's been a difficult week for all concerned, but now we can look forward to the Games commencing."
In fairness we owe Brazil one after Father Neil Horan grappled with the marathon runner in the Olympics that time.
That downhill is scary stuff.

Really enjoyed the ski-cross absolute mad, some of those falls, one of the Canadian girls made a hames of a jump and must have been the better part of 30 foot in the air, she knew she was screwed and fell an awful clatter, think she was ok though.

Ha ha, there was the briefest of brief comments about the Aussie 2-(wo)man bob team's final position and not a single image of them on Channel 9, "the official broadcaster" over here. The coverage has been the usual jingoistic commercial tripe where they haven't shut up about their two golds. And then the coup-de-grace last night...on showing the overall medal table they monumentally fcuked up by showing Australia having won four golds at this games, instead of four in all time.
They have a swimmer conducting the on-scene interviews with athletes too. Talking about scraping the barrel.

The big one one now on BBC2. Canada v USA in the mens ice hockey final. The BBC were saying in the build up that this is the one that means the most to Canadian's and they would rather win this gold than any other.
Canada 1 up.
They are no Mighty Ducks though!
Poor enough or maybe i was expecting to much
Apart from the fights and big hits, Ice Hockey seems like an awful spectator sport. I haven't a clue where the puck is half the time and any wee flicks or things worth seeing have to be replayed in super slow motion to catch them. Maybe I have to watch more of it to get the wee subtleties and stuff.

sure they can use the profits to help pay off the still lingering debts from Montreal '76.
Glad to hear (didn't see it as Channel 9 had fcukin ruined the Olympics for everyone in Australia, especially in Western Oz) that the Canucks won the gold in the hockey.
But the moment of the games for me is that German speedskater. Typical steadfast German resolve.

Great win for the Canucks. Fair Play to them. The medal ceremony was one of those events that made the hair stand up on your neck. Oh Canada sung by thousands of fans. Excellent.
Anyone watch the closing ceremony - John Furlong (ex Tipp man) now the CEO of the Vancouver Games committee gave a good speech - but his French accent needs a lot of work! Neil Young, Avril Livigne, Michael Buble, Michael J. Fox, William Shatner (proud that canadians know how to make love in a canoe) - good enough entertainment.
Already looking forward to TaTu closing the Sochi 2014 games :D

2. Is Olly writing Shatner's scripts?
