Whats the going rate for solicitor fees (hourly rate) for litigation cases and other services?
I've been given a quote by a Dublin-based firm for €300 per hour, I'm thinking this is astronimcal but before I go back to them I was wondering does anyone know whether this is reasonable or not?
Our company werre recently charged £250 per hour by a Belfast based company for similar services. This rate was for consultation with the principal, however I think any additional works carried out by underlings was charged at £150-£175.
This seems quite similar to what your being quoted, but I couldn't help feeling we were being ripped off.
Without being too nosy whats the case in relation to and is it north or south? Could give ya examples price wise for something similar maybe
cheers Larry, its a professional negligence case in the south TG
In the UK I was quoted £90-£100 for something like this 2 years ago and when I got the fees advice through I was a tad shocked to say the least :o
If possible keep a regular check on the hours spent by the solicitors and volume of work carried out. I know most solicitors can tell you any amount of hours they want and seem to get away with it.
In a previous case we thought we had got a good deal by agreeing on a "not to exceed" price, however the company we were pursuing went under before the case really got off the ground. Solicitor then billed us purely on hours spent - amazingly the total hours spent when multiplied by hourly rate came to within £50 of the maximum figure. In my opinion they hadn't carried out anymore than 10% of the work required if the case had went ahead and they couldn't have worked anywhere near the amount of hours they billed us for >:(

We do a lot of professional negligence but would be on a different fee scale level to the south
no worries, if anyone knows or can recommend a good solicitor then please drop me a line or let me know on this thread
I have seen the www.rate-your-solicitor.com website and some interesting reading on there :o but not the crew I have been talking to
300 an hour is too much Sammy.
In these starving times I'd expect 120-150 max in euro.
I have a good few solicitor contacts (clients and professional colleagues) here in Dublin so PM me and I could have a chat. I prob owe you a few after some of the horse tips!

Solictors are a load of f**king crooks.
Got quotes off a number of Solicitors recently for conveyencing fees, picked one that I thought was reasonable went through with the house purchase got the Solicitors fees which turned out to be nearly 4 times as much as his orginal quote due he says to the ammount of unseen work that was involved.

Law Society regulations now require though that u have to receive a Home Charter quote for your work which you have to sign sayin ur happy with - will give u your professional fee and outlays so ur never gona go much outside them brackets - what extra work was involved and how much did his fee go up by?
Master Yoda, I reckon you have a good case against the solicitor and should go to the Law Society with your grievance. 4 times the original quote seems ott. As stated already your solr is obliged by law to outline fees in writing at the start of the process.
you should get onto TacadoirArdMhacha........ never know he could do it for free he seems a decent bloke... oh who am i kidding he's from Armagh.... so he charge double

His orginal professnal fee was £400 plus costs for searchs and the like and he is trying to charge me £1400 plus costs. He maintains he had serious bother getting information from the other Solicitor that he had to keep writing, phoning and emailing them to get it and when it did come through it was in drips and drabs meaning he had to keep going back to it and that it took up a serious amount of his time. Bastard >:(
Thats bull, there is a set professional fee based on the price of the house you are purchasing /selling. It should only go up if there were serious issues surrounding the title of the house etc. Waiting on documents back and forward shouldnt cause a raise in £1000 of his fee - thats ridiculous. Searches and the likes are always in round the £100 mark , mostly less and Land Reg fees would be anything from 100 to 350 depending again on purchase price but thats all included in outlay - not the professional fee.

Pure bullshit. Tell him to f**k off, threaten to report him to the law society.
ONly thing he should be charging more for is if he's to work on a title issue, and they tell you what they have to do and how much it will cost and dont do anything until you agree! Where you selling or buying btw?
hi dont generalise them corporate/ commercial solcitors do charge high rates.

f**king right! The things is firms don't even make ££ from legal aid after they pay salaries, it's more done out of a social duty and to publicise the name of the firm for more profitable activities (probate etc).
As for the conveyancing Master Yoda - we'd always charge £650 or £750 plus VAT for a purchase depending on size and whether it's freehold or leasehold. All conveyancing is really fixed fee now so he can't really get away with charging that.
There is case law to the effect that a costs estimate is taken as a quote now essentially. If he refuses to budge down write to the Legal Complaints Service, they've been set up recently to handle such matters and operate independently of the Law Society.
I expected a couple of schisters like the above to come out of the woodwork at some stage to defend their bloodsucking.
Fact is the majority of lawyers feed off any and every business development and produce f**k all themselves. A shower of self serving back scratching schisters who use smokescreen language and buzzwords to justify outrageous fees for signing letters, making calls and other brief (and very routine) tasks.
Ask anyone who runs a business, solicitors routinely stall done deals with prolonged correspondence with their brethern blood suckers and then expect a pound of flesh for wasting your time. COMPLETE LEECHES!!

Sure what does a business want a solicitor for if they feel like that? Considering the routine tasks solicitors do I'm sure someone in the business could do them, could they not? I'm sure there's no chance of a business being ripped off in a deal that hasn't been ironed out by a solicitor. ::)
Jeez Steve, you have a bit of a problem with solicitors then? If they're charging money for nothing, just hire an inhouse solicitor and save a few pounds.
Corporate lawyers in my experience have often saved their clients hundreds of thousands with their advice on acquisitions, structuring deals, identifying onerous contracts etc. It doesn't happen every time, and not all of the work of solicitors is the big ticket stuff, but they take on a bit of risk (of litigation) in every piece of work they do and are entitled to charge fees commensurate with it.

The reason he has put his price up is because he said he had to spend so much time on it and he has charged us at £150 per/hr.
Was buying and selling Pints but this bill is just for the buying part.
