Is it within an employers right to insist on an employee to shave his beard off?

Depends on whether you have a contract or not and if there is a section relating to "physical & personal presentation" contained within. If you have and there is,
then it could be open to interpretation.

No, Jews grow beards too for religious reasons, I think.

Toby in the west wing had one, he was jewish

It depends on your job.

Any job that meant that you had to wear breathing apparatus e.g. Fireman, it would be strongly recommended that you did not have a beard.  Having a beard means that the seal between the mask and your face is compromised and that would not be good in a toxic atmosphere.

BTW, did you always have a beard since your first day? Did you reappear after holidays with one? did you grow one gradually, or did you become
a muslim overnight?

I'd say there are very few occassions when an employer could ask you to remove a beard. Why you would want to sport a beard is another matter!

Even in the food or pharma industry you can have one if you wear a beard mask so unless there is some health and safety reason then I don't know what they can do. Is there anything in your contract?
