Huge Chinese rocket likely to have uncontrolled re-entry into Earth's atmosphere in the coming days

This will be an interesting one to follow.

China launched a module for its space station into orbit last week, but the mission launcher is heading back to Earth and is uncontrolled. China haven't said whether this was planned and they just don't care, or if there was some error.

The launcher is 30m long x 5m wide and weighs 21 metric tons. Almost impossible to predict how much and in how many fragments it will survive re-entry, but best guess is between 4 tonnes and 10 tonnes will survive. And then travel down to ground at about 350 km/h.

It orbits Earth every 90 minutes. Broadly, its orbit includes New York - Madrid - Beijing - Chile - Wellington. It's much more likely to hit sea or uninhabited areas, but the orbit is so fast, it's impossible to predict at this stage, so will be worth monitoring.

Shite, I was hoping it would fall on Meath.
I'd have picked Tyrone before Meath.

World's population is now 8 billion, according to UN

QuoteIndia has increased by roughly 180 million people, and is set to surpass China as the world's most populous nation next year for the first time in almost 2,000 years.

Every fifth child born in the world in Chinese.

My brother has five children, so one of them must be Chinese. It could be Peter, or Niall, or Ying-Tong, or Stephen, or Sean. But I think it's Stephen.

I would be very worried if I were in charge of India. The average age at which rural women have their first child is less than 20. This accelerates the  growth of the popuulation.
It's not clear how everyone can be fed long term. The Green Revolution boosted Indian agricultural output but instead of boosting living standards it drove population growth and the underground wells used to provide irrigation are not getting any bigger.
The Indian State of Uttar Pradesh had 170 million in 2000 and now has 233 million. It's about 5 times the size of the 26 counties.

By the end of this century, the UN projects that Africa, which had less than one-tenth of the world's population in 1950, will be home to 3.9 billion people, or 40% of humanity.

Fun Fact: in 120 years time, there will be 8 billion different people walking on planet Earth.

Another documentary on Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding was on tg4 tonight. Things have gone well for Nancy and badly for Tonya since 1994. However Tonya is still the only one who had a big successful, acclaimed Hollywood movie made about her.
