Agreed, while there will always be 1 or 2 quibles giggs would be down my list also.

Id have alonso, mascherano and carragher in the as well. Riera had a great first half of the season, when the voting was as well apparently.

Also murphy at fulham.

Ach come on nifan, there's an arguement for Alonso but Carragher ahead of either of the 2 centre backs?! No way.
As I dream about movies they won't make of me when I'm dead

As far as Fergies canvassing go, I have only heard him mention giggs for the award in recent weeks, was this award not decided in February time?

Any of the big bookies reporting "irregular betting patterns" in the run up to this?

Think he means ahead of Giggs TAC.

nifan

I did mean ahead of Giggs.
Id have had vidic or gerrard for the award.

Giggs wouldnt have made it near the team.

Minder

Scholes has never won it.

Between him and Tom Finney next year i would think.

All probably as good as Giggs this year, especially Toshack.

Maybe it was a sentimental vote but again its voted by his peers and they all decided he deserved it (and not by fans with different agendas). No matter what complaints everyone has the following doesn't lie -

FA Community Shield (7): 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008
UEFA Champions League (2): 1998–99, 2007–08
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1991
Intercontinental Cup (1): 1999
FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2008

With another possible set of League and Champions League medals this year to follow last years. For me Giggs has been example to everyone in current football regimes with his loyalty, respect, fair play (1 senting off in his career I think, playing for Wales), dedication, consistency.......... You can argue that other players in the Utd have had a better season but Giggs consistently has performed at the highest level for the last 17 seasons (I think). People like Fletcher may have had a good season but they only look so good because they have raised the bar from last season, it's easy to forget people who consistently deliver when asked.

Personally I'm glad he got it and could care less about the team of the year and who should/shouldn't have been included. We're all fans and we would like to see own teams players in there but FFS Mascherano  ::) ;D

Again your missing the point.

No one is arguing that he hasn't been a legendary player over the last number of years but none of the titles you have mentioned should be considered in this season's player of the year award if it is to be respected as a legitimate accolade.

How do we know they were, this award was selected by fellow professionals and who knows what they look for when picking a player of the year award.

It seems likely they where not looking for the best player of the year

Amusing again to see the ABU's and Liverpool fans get their knickers in a twist about this. Some of you are putting more thought into it than Mr Giggs will.. :D :D

i'm sure there were lots of other years he deserved it but cetainly not this year. if i was giggs i wouldnt be overly pleased about it either as it seems like a bit of a sympathy vote. a bit like peter o'toole getting a livetime achievement award (or something like that) from the oscars after becoming the most nominated actor never to win the best actor oscar. and if i remember right he didnt collect the award. could be wrong though
