GAA Discussion / U.S. College Rugby
May 10, 2015, 05:31:54 PM
St Mary's Moraga in California have just won their second Division 1 college US championship. They are called the Gaels and in the 1950s had a GAA team. Some of you guys may have played in GAA games in Moraga in the 80s and 90s. One of the winning players yesterday was Kevin O'Connor son of Tom O'Connor who was a mainstay of the Boru GAA club in San Francisco.

General discussion / Tyrone Tribulations
January 22, 2014, 06:29:37 AM
The excellent Tyrone Tribulations website has reached half a million hits according to today's Irish News.  One of the main anonymous contributors is a former Coalisland area resident and 38 year old father of two.
I fully expect him to be exposed as a teacher in West Belfast.

General discussion / Butte, Montana
January 19, 2014, 05:39:53 PM
Folks, I'm hoping to drive from San Francisco to Butte, Montana in July.  It's a place I've wanted to visit since I heard about the "Butte brogue" and the Irish that worked on the mines there.  Has anyone been and have they any recommendations?  Thanks

General discussion / BHD parking rip off warning
May 25, 2010, 06:52:32 AM
Parking is expensive at Belfast City Airport.  Last week I  had to pick up a friend from there.  I arrived at 7.20am and the fee for two hours was £6.50.  His flight arrived at 8.20am and I met him 10 mins later.  I paid the fee and as we were leaving the terminal we met a friend and stood talking for 10 mins.  At the barrier the machine asked me for another £2.  I pressed the intercom and was told I had to pay it as I had taken more than 10 mins to get to the car.  A rip off!

General discussion / Tattoo Artist needed
February 11, 2009, 08:43:53 PM
to tattoo idiot or whatever the Italian equivalent across my forehead.
I was walking, with my wife, alongside the Tiber in Rome heading for the Spanish Steps.
A man in a car stops and asks her directions to the Vatican.  She asked me to help, he said a stupid German had given him directions and he wanted to know if it was left or right to the Vatican.  This stupid Irish man said right.  He then asked where I was from and when he heard Ireland he told us that his wife was from Dublin.  He enquired what I did and I said I was a teacher and I even showed him our school badge.  He told us he was from Milan and worked for Calvin Klein.  He was really well dressed.  He said that he was late for a meeting and due to the stupid German the party he was to meet was probably gone.  He showed us a magazine of CK's latest fashion shoot.
He then said that he would like to give my wife one of the samples that he was carrying to the meeting.  He showed her a white leather jacket and told her to feel the quality.  He then told me that I should have a jacket too as the meeting was not going to take place.  He advised me feel the quality of the black leather jacket.  The then handed a bag with both in to my wife, he then went ohh I'm out of gas could you give me just the money for a fill, encouraged by the First Lady (I couldn't have done it myself of course!) I took out my Armagh coloured wallet and all I had was 50 euro notes. I took one out and he grabbed it and said thank you and zoomed off.
It slowly dawned on me that I had been had.  Now I've lived in London, San Francisco and New York and travelled widely in Europe and South America and never been caught like that.  The only time that came close was Tyrone's robbery of Sam in 2003!
To make matters worse I had to carry the bloody bag to the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and the Colosseum.  It was living proof of my stupidity.
Back at the hotel we found that we were the new owners of faux leather jackets and I would need to lose six stones to fit in mine.
Generous man that I am I left them in the hotel room with a note to give them to charity.
Any one heading to the rugby next week beware of well dressed Romans or Milanese bearing gifts!

General discussion / Thanksgiving
November 27, 2008, 05:11:15 PM
I've just realised it's Thanksgiving in the States.  When I was there it was bigger than Christmas.  Happy Thanksgiving to our US posters and go easy on the pumpkin pie.

General discussion / O'Neill and 2 October 1978
August 14, 2008, 12:13:41 PM
Just listened to a teacher, Shane O'Neill, on Radio Ulster talk about 2 October 1978 and how he was caned for writing "very" in front of a teacher's "good" remark.  I enjoyed the piece and it is on Radio Ulster just before 12 tonight.  It is probably our O'Neill and I will always think of him on the birthday that I share with Sting!

General discussion / Places Time has Forgotten
June 28, 2008, 05:48:53 AM
Yesterday I toured two places that I had never been in before Galbally and Cappagh in Tyrone.  They are less than 20 miles from where I live.  Galbally struck me as a dynamic place, super Community Centre and a Chinese takeaway!
Cappagh on the other hand was like a place from the 50's, it seems to be stuck in time with a lot of run down houses and shops.  I have to say that this was a cursory inspection as it was lashing at the time and I probably am being unfair to the place.
We used to say that Blackwatertown (Portmor) in Armagh was another place time had left behind, however recent developments have helped improve it considerably.
I was wondering if there are other villages in the country that would fit this description?

General discussion / Tony F and Today
June 22, 2008, 04:13:38 PM
Listening to the car radio this morning and Today FM announced that Tony Fearon from Pontzpass was the winner of two tickets to the Armagh Down Ulster semi final.  It seems he submitted an ode to Francie Bellew and was rewarded with two of his customary freebies.  It made me chuckle and my wife was asking who was the legend that is Tony Fearon.  All I could say was that he is an enigma!

General discussion / Change for the better
May 19, 2008, 08:27:30 PM
I have posted on hurling being played in East Belfast.  Another possible sign of the times was the Linfield team at a weddding in the Ostan Gweedore on Saturday past.  More importantly than that I had a great 24oz steak there.

Hurling Discussion / Hurling in East Belfast
April 15, 2008, 06:17:37 PM
I was in a "Protestant" school in east Belfast today and I watched five 16 year olds pucking around.  They were very good.  Their Principal tod me that they belong to Belfast Cuchulainns and were playing in an inter continental tournament in Philadelphia this summer.  The team is made up of cross community schools in Belfast.  It was great to see and gives me hope for a decent future in the north.

General discussion / Top Irish American
March 13, 2008, 09:36:00 PM
I see that the Irish America magazine is hosting the top 100 Irish American awards today and Tom Moran of Mutual of America has won the top award because of his contribution to the peace process.  Some of the north and south politicians are in New York for it.  I don't suppose heganboy or J70 are attending.

GAA Discussion / Bow ties (Dicky bows)
February 02, 2008, 06:05:47 PM
The club has a gala ball this evening and I've just had to admit defeat with trying to tie my own bow tie.  That is inspite of watching videos of how to do so on You Tube.  I'm resorting to the one I had when I was a waiter in the local hotel!  God be with the days when a shirt and tie did dinner dances.

General discussion / Irish Mail on Sunday and the board
January 13, 2008, 08:57:51 AM
The Irish Mail, page 90, (sorry don't know how to post it) has an article about this board and the edited post and reply by moderators on the Louth player saga.  It also refers to the Antrim manager proposed legal action. I suspect there is a a move on to ostracise bulletin boards like this.

General discussion / Garage door remote controls
December 16, 2007, 05:45:25 PM
I have a worn out remote for a garage door.  Gliderol have stopped making the remote.  Does anyone know if it is possible to clone a remote and if yes, who does it?
Thanks

General discussion / Memory Foam beds
November 26, 2007, 04:26:41 PM
I see posters enquiring about flat screen TVs and expensive brandy, this probably shows my grasp (or lack of it) on life but has anyone experience of memory foam beds?  I have heard a lot of positive talk about them, mainly from American friends.  I went to look in a couple of shops and the range and price is vast.  From £500 to £2300 for memory foam only, memory foam on pocket springs etc. Thanks

GAA Discussion / All Ireland football programme
September 02, 2007, 07:15:16 PM
Does anyone know when the programmes for the Kerry v Cork final are actually published?  I'd love to get hold of a couple, if they come out early in the week, and send to a couple of men in San Francisco so that they could have them as they watch Setanta.
