General discussion / External Hard Drive
December 22, 2009, 09:13:38 AM
Im looking for some recommendations for a good external hard drive. My wife's father has a mountain of photos, documents etc on his computer that he wants to take off and free up some space. So I've been given the job of doing that over the christmas.  :(

Anyway, normally for something like this I'd buy online, where there'd be a load of different options, but because I'm now stuck for time I'll have to make do with buying from the local PC world. So I checked there last night and the options are:

1. Western Digital Elements 500GB. €69.99
2. Seagate Freeagent 500GB. €89.99
3. Iomega Prestige 500GB. €64.99

Does anyone have any experience of the above units? Once I've saved all his files onto the drive, it'll probably be stored away and rarely used again. But the important thing is that the unit must be reliable - if I end up getting him a hard drive that loses all his files, I'd be better off leaving the country..

anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Want to upgrade my old Olympus 3MP digital camera, and Im debating whether to stay with the Compact Digital range or move up to the Digital SLR cameras.

Budget would be about €300-€400, so Im sure there are a few options out there. I'll be buying the camera for my wife and she's keen to get into photography, including doing some courses, which is why Im leaning towards the entry level Digital SLR range. However for that price, we could get a very high spec compact digital camera.

Have found this Sony SLR which seems good value at £260 including lens.

Anyone any experience with the above sony unit or entry level SLRs in general. Would appreciate any advice

thanks

Tickets went on sale this morning at 9.00 for this show next March. The ticketmaster site just kept crashing on me, so tried ringing them and the show has already sold out  :'(

Anyway, if anyone knows how I can get tickets, or knows somebody willing to part with a couple of tickets for the Thursday night concert, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it.

My wife would absolutely love to go to this concert.

General discussion / Multi-Room Music Systems
December 15, 2008, 03:32:55 PM
Any audiophiles out there??

Im think about investing in a multi-room music system and just wondering if anyone has any experience of the various systems out there. Sony, Philips & Logitech all have their own variations but top of the bunch seems to be Sonos. So, I'm thinking of getting the Sonos BU120 (http://www.sonos.com/whattobuy/promos/bundle120/default.aspx?rdr=true&LangType=2057). It's got superb reviews everywhere I've seen and supports every format imaginable including FLAC, which is the format I'll be storing all my CDs in. It's a very pricey piece of kit though so thats why I'm wondering if anyone here has got one.

Also, if I do go for the Sonos unit, I'll probably store all my CDs on a NAS device. So has anyone any recommendations for a good NAS unit, not costing the earth. 80GB would be absolutely loads of storage for my needs even with ripping my CDs to FLAC.

thanks in advance.

Lads,
Any of you watch this show?? I've downloaded and watched the first 2 seasons and have downloaded first few episodes of the 3rd season.

An excellent show. Must be near the best TV being shown at the moment. I think it's on FX or some other Sky channel but not sure which season is currently being shown.

Just wondering if there are many more fans of the super-cool serial killer.

General discussion / Multimedia Player
August 25, 2008, 01:01:43 PM
Looking to get myself a multimedia player/hard drive which I can download movies onto and watch on my TV.

A mate of mine has the Iomega Screenplay Multimedia Drive & loves it (see website below:)
http://www.iomega-europe.com/section?SID=14eeeb26e17fed259ac7b440ba512f64af7:4735&secid=39289#content_tabs

Has a 500GB of memory and he has over 200 movies on it, which he downloaded from his laptop. He then just connects it to his TV via a scart lead. Sounds like just the job.

Im wondering if anyone else has any experience with the Iomega unit or other similar makes/models which they'd recommend.

Cheers

TV3 WINS EXCLUSIVE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RIGHTS

TV3 today announced it has secured exclusive Irish terrestrial rights to Tuesday night UEFA Champions League matches for three seasons commencing September 2009.

The deal includes 16 live and exclusive first pick matches, exclusive terrestrial highlights for all Tuesday night matches and delayed rights to all other matches in the competition.

This announcement sees the return of the world's biggest club football tournament to TV3. The new deal also includes Round 3 of the UEFA Champions League qualifying games and an extra match night in the Round of 16.

Commenting on today's announcement Pat Kiely, TV3's Commercial Director said:

"Off the back of both Rugby World Cup 2007and last week's hugely successful launch of live GAA Championship coverage, this is a major coup for TV3 which ensures year-round live premier sport on the channel. The UEFA Champions League is as good as it gets in club football and it just continues to grow in prestige and popularity. We are really looking forward to working with UEFA and TEAM, their marketing partner, in providing top class Tuesday night coverage."

oh sweet jesus. I know we all complain about dunphy, brady & giles but I'd seriously rather watch paint dry than tune into TV3's soccer coverage. At least it's only tuesday night games, I suppose.

General discussion / Laptop Warranty
December 29, 2007, 03:24:10 PM
Hi All,
Been looking on this board for years now but this is my first post.

I've just purchased a new laptop from PC World - Compaq Presario C701. Retail price was €699 but was on sale for €519 so i think i did ok. Anyway, generally i wouldnt even think about taking out additional warranty but i was talking to the salesman who was surprisingly a genuinely honest guy. He said that PC World do have a reputation about ripping off the customer when it comes to warranty etc. but that the existing deal is good value for money. it's a 3 yr warranty including accidental damage and costs €180 (€18 per month for 10mths). However it also includes 1 service/health check per year for the 3 years. These normally cost €80 each so by getting these 3 health checks done, you already save the warranty costs. He also said that if the laptop needs to be replaced due to damage, then i will be entitled to a new laptop worth €699 rather than the €519 i paid.

anyway, as you can guess i decided to take out the warranty but i can cancel the direct debit within the next 14days if i wish. so im looking for some advice from the tech guys on this board. Do you think the warranty is worth it or should i cancel. I will only be using the laptop in the house so the chances of damage is quite slim. but i do like the fact that i have 3 free health checks included.

anyway, any advice welcome & thanks in advance..
