No league this year. It was actually done away with when they moved the minor championship to be a group series.
One of the Mayo teams won the Ted Webb u16 last year.

Looks like between Mayo or Galway for this title again but I wouldn't rule out Sligo who played a few matches in the Ulster minor league in the spring drawing with Donegal in one game. Sligo for the second year in succession won the U16 Fr Manning Cup.

Leitrim are the weakest team. Roscommon are much like last year, on their day can pull off a shock win but unlikely to win this provincial title.

Result Galway 2-17 Leitrim 0-12. Harsh scoreline on the effort Leitrim put in, Galway 1-8 Leitrim 0-10 it was on 43 minutes. Strong final quarter by Galway and strangely played their best football when down to 14 men.

Scoreline a bit harsh on Leitrim. They looked in a good position with 20 minutes to go with Galway down to 14. Galway inexplicably played far better with 14 than they did with 15 and outscored Leitrim 1-7 to 0-2 down the stretch.  They needed to raise it as they looked in a bit of bother once the red card came out.

Conall Gallagher was outstanding for Galway. Kicked 0-6 from play from midfield. And could even afford to miss the easiest chance he had.

6 day turn around will be tough. A lot of lads on both sides went down with cramp towards the end.

You'd wonder if there's any point in having this competition going ahead seeing as there'll be some sort of restrictions after Christmas.

Should have scheduled the provincial championships to finish this month. Little chance of games going ahead in January,  will be pushed back to late February early March i can imagine now.

Roscommon was about 12 points the better team in that match, Galway couldn't live the pace and energy of the young rossies.

Yeah well beaten. Surprised at the margin of the defeat rather than the defeat itself.
This particular group of Galway players haven't shown much at u14/15/16 over the past few years.
A steep learning curve for Alan Glynn in his first year in charge.
A very difficult year to manage them in fairness as it turned out.

Disappointing showing alright but as you said this bunch weren't considered to be close to the same calibre as our last 5 minor sides who were all various shades of very good. They struggled to put away Leitrim for a long time last week which had me worried. Still a couple handy players there who can make an impact once they are moved into better sides as they develop.

Great win and performance for Sligo. Doing well at underage,
Won the last two U16 Fr Manning Cups and will now fancy their chances to win a Connacht minor title.

Let's not get carried away. Mayo have 40 minor titles and closing in on 50 senior. Galway have 29 minor, and closing in on 50 senior.

Sligo have  2 Connacht minors. They last played Roscommon (13 titles) in a minor final in 1949. Roscommon won the replay but Sligo were awarded the win after an objection. We owe them big time for that.

But with all the focus on Dublin's dominance, the fact that Galway and Mayo with their population advantages in Connacht have almost 100 senior titles between them and 69 of 87 Connacht minors shows this is repeated throughout the land. It means their young players are nearly always in the closing stages, getting that experience, and indeed winning silverware.. It's never split here, but telling Ros/Sligo/Leitrim to amalgamate when we hate the sight of each other, only in football mind you. Grand lads otherwise.

Well done Sligo indeed!

It was Kerry, not Dublin, who won 4 or 5 in a row of minor titles.

If Dublin was that successful, it would be more "evidence" of how the Games Development money unfairly advantages Dublin - even though not a cent goes to the elite players coaching, but again nobody seems to care what the games development officers actually do, and just presume they're coaching the elite players at every club, even though it couldn't be further from the truth.

But the Dublin minors should always be competitive, we have by miles the biggest pick and we have ex-county players training them from U14 up.  However we got an almighty beating from Meath this year, albeit Meath have a decent size pick too, and it's generally very competitive at minor level between Dublin, Meath and Kildare, and there's usually at least one of the others in the mix from year to year too, like Offaly this year.

However, the Dubs players who got tanked this year will certainly improve. They'll nearly all be playing Division 1 or Division 2 ultra competitive club football from now on. When's Covid's gone there's a guaranteed 15 league games which will bring them on no end, not to mention the championship games. Each of them will also be going to college in Dublin or working in Dublin, so no hassle of travelling like most of the rest of the country.

Indeed.
Piking 15 or 20 big tall lads into a bus and traipsing them across Country for 2 or 3 hours , 2 hours training and then reverse the bus journey....
Wears lads out and any benefit from the training is lost by being cramped into a bus for 4 to 6 hours. And probably 1 am before lads hit the best.
Hopefully the Covid situation will lead to more remote working and studying to make it a bit easier for lads from rural Counties.
However Sligo has 4,800 registered GAA players, Dublin 39,000.
If you take say the top 1% as potential County Seniors its 48 v 390.....

It's a good thing to see a final without the 'big two', but is it sensible for this game to go ahead at all, the way things seem to be heading?
Seems very likely this new strain of the virus is in Ireland and it's 70% more transmissible.
I can see all sporting activity being banned.

If this final wasn't played this month the two group of players could be left waiting months before its played. Already its been a stop start season for them when this championship was meant to start in May and again in October but postponed.

The thing is I can't see the All-Ireland semi-finals and finals going ahead any time soon so it might make more sense to delay the various provincial finals or whoever wins this  will be going into the All-Ireland semi-finals cold. Given the health concerns I'd be cancelling the remaining minor games at provincial level.

I think it more sensible to finish off the provincial championships by the end of the month. The All-Ireland series will be level playing field for the 4 provincial winners then and it's unlikely the All-Ireland semi finals will played in January as was fixed but we'll see.

As Dr Cillian De Gascun said today, there’s no evidence of the new Covid-19 strain in Ireland, and says there’s no hard evidence to suggest that it is more transmissible. The rise infection rate is because of a lifting of restrictions and everywhere crowded with the usual mad rush before Christmas.

Roscommon 0-4 Sligo 0-0 at half-time.

Hurricane conditions apparently - Roscommon had the wind in the first half.
Lousy enough that the young lads had to play on St Stephens Day but in these conditions is very unfair, especially when the GAA have confirmed the minor competition will be finished even if it's in a few months time.

Hard luck to Sligo. This Sligo team has been strong through the grades on top of last year's minor team, so that augurs well for future of Sligo football. But Roscommon by far the stronger team today but I did not think a 4 point lead would be enough at HT. But clearly it was no easier score with that driving gale and rain and Roscommon were the better ball handlers in those conditions. Hoping for a better day against Kerry, if indeed that day ever comes.
