Lambert is a huge Liverpool fan. He would probably crawl to Liverpool to sign for them. He's not a very sexy signing if it happens but for 4M+ he would be a big upgrade on Aspas and at 32 would probably be happy enough to sit on the bench most weeks and provide cover for Suarez and Sturridge. 13 goals and 10 assists last season. I would be happy enough with that as a bench option even if it's only for a few years.

That was his return having played 37 games, if he's going to be on the bench most of the time is that not an unrealistic number of goals/assists? I've no idea who they have coming through but could they get the same return with someone from their development team without spending the money. I thought it was 8 million.

There have been a lot of names chucked around as legends in the past week on this site but Giggs on the field is what ever player should aspire to. Played 963 times (I think is correct) for his club, put is some amazing performances and will take a long time before a player will win as many awards. To have done this with one club shows loyalty in an age when money is gone crazy.

Hope we can find another Giggs soon!

Best move would be take 30m for Rooney and remodel the attack. Rooney is not flexible enough at the top level. Fergie had it right playing him on the left of the front three but appeasing him centrally since has stunted the development of the team and we haven't seen the capacity of Kagawa, januzaj or mata as a consequence.

Rooney has world class natural ability but he doesn't have the temperament, attitude or, most crucially, the smarts to harness the talent.

I've always felt that giving him the big contract was a business move to tie him down rather than a team move. When the new guy comes in he may decide to dump him and now that he is tied to the club for a longer time they can get a big number for him. They could also wait until next summer and then dump him. I'm sure they can get a lot more than 30M for him and could replace him with someone like Benzema for a lot less as he has only 1 year left on his contract. Personally I'd dump Van Persie as it's difficult to get 100% from him but with the new lad it sounds like VP will stay.

Mark Odgen reporting that it will be Wednesday or Thursday when Van Gaal is confirmed http://t.co/d93nbWp2Lf

One day one of these reports will be right!

As much as I dislike Liverpool I do feel a bit sorry for Gerrard. He is a genuine club player who has devoted himself to one team instead of chasing money. He drag them to this position a number of times during the year.
I still think Liverpool have been very lucky this year and recently I feared their name was written on it this year ( there is still the possibility). They were lucky against City that Suarez wasn't sent of for diving early on when on a yellow card and lucky the clown Skrtel didn't give up a penalty in the last min when he punched the ball. Then with Norwich, lucky in the last few mins that Norwich didn't score. Their luck was going to run out.
I don't know if they bottled it or not, but for sure the pressure got to them and the supporters helped put this pressure on them even though everyone says they were happy with top 4. You could almost see the pressure rising when the bus arrived before the Chelsea game. Same last night pressure played a big part with all players and manager, no one thinking right. They were right to hurry things up after the 3rd goal as they had momentum but once they conceded one, momentum changed and was time to shut shop.
This chance was a big opportunity missed, no matter what way you want to think. Chelsea & City will get stronger next season, United won't be as bad and even though Liverpool will sign a few players (no guarantee they will all work out) with CL football next season in a tough group, it will be a long road back.

I had forgotten how annoying Liverpool supporters were (AZ!), I remembered them as a bit more gracious 25 years ago but I guess Fergie hurt :)

Luck, yes luck, that's all it has been all year.  ::) Nothing to do with the 3,4,5,6 goals they were scoring in games and ripping opponents apart. There have been a few unlucky incidents throughout the season which would counter your point. The league table doesn't lie and with one game left Liverpool could still be crowned champions (slim but still possible), I cannot fathom how 37/8 game season can be put down to luck.

Well, next season will tell us. Still think they have overachieved this season and have had the rub of the green more than most, not dissimilar to United last year.

On Gerrard, you'll find a lot of United people on here sympathizing with his plight. Just because someone shows hatred towards him doesn't mean their United supporters...

On the opportunity missed, anytime the title is in you hands 3 games out after a long season, it's a missed opportunity. Certainly when you haven't been in this position for a long time. It's a long hard slog back to this position next year so these opportunities need to be taken. Extra players next year and the buzz of CL may get them back here again, but there's no guarantee. Time will tell, maybe there's another twist tonight yet.

On the night Giggs could have played his last game at Old Trafford a sizeable section of the crowd were singing songs about the Liverpool captain. A bit embarrassing really.

Seriously? And all the guff that was sung and spoke about United/Moyes this season? Its part of the game, get the digs in when your rivals are hurting most on the field - thats expected is it not?
No mention of the Chelsea fans singing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5NnE6I75GY

Still crapping it that there's one last twist......

Muck Savage, i'm a United fan, but if you were trying to criticise AZ Offaly, i can't accept that. He is one of the most knowledgable and fairest contributors on here. Definitely better than some of the Liverpool contributors.
+1 AZ,  deiseach and a few others are fair minded Liverpool supporters. Unlike a few of the United obsessed dopes who've clocked up hundreds of trolling posts on the United topic.

Yep, at the man who engraved my hatred of Liverpool 25 years ago.

AZ - Looks like some of those young ones that chased you around 25 years ago got behind a keyboard ;)

I think there are many more twists and turns in this yet. City won't take all 9 points. The problem with them is they don't have the passion or hunger that the Liverpool players have and now they have to get that hunger for 3 games in a week, can't see them doing it. Money can buy you a lot of things but hunger, no. The biggest banana skin is the Aston Villa game, they are only 3pts out of the drop zone and with Sunderland and Fulham making a big charge they are in real trouble. By the time that game comes around they could be in the bottom three! Everton can still get 4th, unlikely, but they will want to keep the pressure on Arsenal by winning Sat also.
For the Palace game I think Liverpool might be better off if City beat Everton, then they know they have to go at Palace as they have nothing to lose. If City drop points then the pressure is back on Liverpool so they may play differently.

There will be lots of ups and downs yet.

Furthermore, the US (along with Australia, China ,UK and other countries) are putting many resources and manpower toward trying to reclaim these people for their families and yet disgusting political parasites like you seek to make hay on their suffering.

This is why I despise you and Seafoid so much. You really are the scum of mankind. Always looking for an angle to push your hateful agenda.

The reason the US are putting so much resources into this is to find out the cause of the crash. People in the US want to know if there's a possibility that this can happen again to a US plane. This added to the fact the Boeing is a big employer in the US, lots of tax income etc. Recovering the bodies for the families is a long way down the list of reasons for spending the resources.

Can't believe there's even any debate on the 2nd penalty yesterday. It's a simple question. Was Flanagan fouled, yes or no?

If it's yes it's a penalty.

For the record he was clearly fouled. The keeper nearly pulled the boot and sock off him ffs. Getting a slight touch on the ball doesn't mean you can just drag down the player afterwards.

Rose coloured Glasses come to mind or should I say Red Coloured Glasses.

I think the majority of Liverpool football minded people will acknowledge that Liverpool got a very dodgy penalty.

It has been wonderful watching all the Man Utd fans and their proxies trying to redefine what a satisfactory season is to Liverpool supporters. At this rate it won't be long before they'll be saying that not winning the Champions League this year amounts to failure.

Not trying to define what a satisfactory season is to you but if you're sure Liverpool will be in this position or better next season and the season after with 6 games to go then ye should kick back and enjoy 3rd. Getting to this point in a season in the situation Liverpool are in is not easy, 6 games for a League title is a lot easier that 38 games. The progress made by Rodgers this year has been huge, and fair play to him, but I wouldn't count on the same progress next year. Of course this is only an opinion, only you can say what is Satisfactory for a Liverpool supporter.

OK, I might buy that. But I see no reason why they won't continue to develop. Obviously the other teams, and Man United, will also continue to develop and invest. I just think it's too easy to say 'If they don't win it this year they never will'. There were many (including myself) who said they had no chance of winning it THIS year. Now suddenly it's their best and only chance. Hard to be that definitive I think.

Also, just on the champions league thing, it obviously helps this year that the team is rested and relatively setted (very settled in this run). However with the larger squad that this success will allow them, and critically with higher quality signings, then they will be better positioned to deal with that load. It won't be *this* squad that's having to deal with the European Games. Having said that, you may be right, and it may take a step back before any new signings will be as comfortable as the squad is now.

How many players do you think Liverpool will pick up in the Summer? 2-4? Will that be enough to manage the extra EC games? Liverpool have been very lucky this year that they haven't had any major injuries with a number of players out at the same time, they haven't gone through any spells where they dropped many points in say 3-4 games in a row something others have done. In fairness to them they have been very consistent all season and the lack of EU games will have helped. City looked tired at the weekend. While I think they have been the most consistent team this year I think they have had the rub of the green also and I think you'd agree with that.
Any young team coming up that is top of the table with 6 games left and your 2 main competitors coming to your house needs to be winning this. Next year is going to be a whole lot harder to get back to a similar position and losing this now could knock a team back a few years. Winning now could push them on a long way (a la Clare in '95 when we let them win one and then couldn't get rid of them until we beat them out the gate in '98 after 3 battles). Next year will be a whole lot harder either way to get back to this position.

How can Moyes say 2 weeks ago that Liverpool had to be favourites coming to Old Trafford yet Giggsy's coming out today saying that Man Ure aren't underdogs against probably the best team in the world?

Sounds like they're losing the plot in Salford!!

It's called mind games man. Like all three City, Liverpool and Chelskie managers coming out saying they all are the underdog and Wenger saying they are in with a shout still. Christ you can always find someone from each team saying something that does not seem logic.
