GAA Discussion / Re: ROSCOMMON v CORK (MARCH 2)
February 29, 2008, 01:52:44 PM
Hopefully we wont let the country down, on  paper cork are a far stronger team, half back line in particular. Ros have 2 decent backs, a midfield that wont win clean ball, but will work hard & score, a forward line thats decent with options on the bench. Hard to call perhaps a one point victory for the Rossies. Specator - agree fully with your comments on O Neill.

GAA Discussion / Re: Roscommon Vs Meath

Locals took it for granted that 1 mile of cars parked on both sides of the road in Kiltoom yesterday was an indicator that a match of sorts was taking place. Didn't realise Meath people were as thick as the ones in Mayo ;D :D. Only having a laugh, I guess it should have been sign posted better. Anyhow the match was fantastic our best performance under Maughan, had we came into the game with any confidence would have probably won it with 6 to spare. Saying all that Meath were rusty yesterday, & you get the feeling will have much bigger days ahead of them this summer, always liked the Meath lads big, tough, direct & supporters are good craic & quite humble. Division does not look as strong as earlier predicted, Armagh have gone back a lot, Cork will probably cancel another few games cause their nice new socks might get dirty :'( ;D, Dublin only beat WMeath by 2 at home. A fired up Monaghan defo have the winning of this division.. Good luck to Meath for rest of campaign football needs a team like Meath.

Yes, but it wont happen. Would love to see Dublin & Meath refusing to play them or alternatively them getting relegated to Div 3 after getting beaten by the other 7 teams in Div 2. Proud county me arse, proud counties dont refuse to play ball

The way the Rossies are going, if they switched it back without telling them, they would probably still lose.

Is Kiltoom a good-standard ground? Facilities etc.

Kiltoom ground has recently been worked on, all facilities are excellent. Parking will be a problem so expect a long walk. The ground is located 7 miles outside Athlone on the main Roscommon road, its quarter of a mile down a wee road to the right.

2 Senior Connacht titles since GAA began Sligoman & possibly on your way to D 4 football next season, dont be shouting too loud ;)

Not all sport fans are Catholics. Have to cater for all.

?? How to you figure out the catholics are catered for, no wonder you have 6070 posts. Always have a comment on everything but rarely constructive.

Mickey agree with the day that was in it, the owners of the stadium (which prides itself on its sometimes bigotted heritage)  should have provided fish for the supporters, of which the majority would have been catholics.

Monaghan are playing host to Roscommon this sunday..
Any ross fans on here: what do ye make of your chances this sunday?

Have not met a Rossie who expects to win this one, Ros are a team for the future where as Monaghan will be expecting to build on their excellent year gone by. The Ros backline is weak, the forwards are good (with Dolan & Dunning on the bench) I expect Ros to test Monaghan, under Maughan we tend to start slow & finish slow with a midlan in between. Generous odds of 3/1 to win this game - I will keep my money in my pocket.

Between Westmeath, Cavan & Ros to go down. Ros have both these teams at home & also play Cork (a team Ros rarely lose to at home) at home. News from the Ros camp at the moment appears to be negative, pity as I could see them finishing in the top half of the table if relationships between all players, county board/ management were good. Despite this I expect us to win the 3 games above,  give the Jackeens a good run before  losing & also loose to Monaghan, Meath & Armagh. Stick my neck out & go for Meath & Dublin to gain promotion. Monaghan, while I expect them to give us a bit of a roasting will suffer from second year syndrome & will falter as the season goes on, hope Cork get relegated bunch of Prima Donnas.

I see you've mayo first . I beleive it a home game for roscommon in the home of FBD Ballinlough , what a hole, was there for a game and despite an attendence of only 1500 there were worse traffic james than a connacht final. The powers that be seem to really want to bury this competition,

Agreed Ballinlough is an awful choice of venue for an inter county match. Since its a home game for Ros game should be played in Ballaghaderreen!

Some papers referred to the fact that she was ridiculed in other papers recently after her birthday party, deeply upsetting her. What was said Gaeilgoir?

Barry "Ballbag" Egan was almost wetting himself on the back page of the sindo last week, all about her party and her claims that she had now finished doing coke. The final line of the article said that she would have to "draw a line under that statement following her party".... but this chain of events was started by "those photos" a few months ago.... this constant exposure and tittle tattle about no mark high society people along side the Liam Lawlor story only shows that gutter journalisim is not just confined to the red tops any more.

Agree the Sindo is a rag. Their reporting of the Lawlor tragedy was horrific, bad when sensationalism takes precedence over accurate journalism. Egan and the Editor should be ashamed of themselves, for printing such sh*te at a sensitive time. He questioned the fact that she was a celebrity, and at the same time he devoted part of the back page to her, idiot.

The better team lost. Goalkeeper making the most fundamental of errors cost Bridgets the game. As a fullback from the age of 10 the thing I was told repeatedly was not to cross my own goal, a cardinal sin for a fullback let alone a goalkeeper. Robbie kelly was caught out badly for the first goal. O Carrol & Mannion never let the heads down & O Carrol was desperately unlucky to see his last gasp shot come of the crossbar, a goal at that stage was what Bridgets deserved. The two Dolans were poor on the day, Frankie missing two handy frees & generally playing well below his capabilities.

For the Mayo boys, Liam Brady kicked well & their goalkeeper did well with an excellent one handed save to deprive G.Dolan a goal in a well worked move. D.Brady (a player I admire greatly) started well with two well taken points, but let himself down badly with unsporting ducking & diving thereafter - seriously pissed off about that. Ballina crowd also booed F.Dolan at every chance which I think is chit.

In conclusion the better football team lost, a cute hoor of a Ballina side roughed things up, fell on the ground in the tackle & won as a result of Bridgets mistakes. All that said ye are west of the Shannon so the very best of luck for the rest of the All Ireland series.

Seamus O Neill (Roscommon) Big strong lad, perfect football build. Loss of interest.
Frankie Dolan (Roscommon) Indiscipline + Maughan factor.
John Dowd (Roscommon) Promising fullback who replaced Pat Doorey in early 90s - emigrated.
Luke Dolan (Roscommon) Superb corner forward with excellent left foot. Enjoyed the good life.
Lorcan Dowd (Roscommon) Talented forward. Could not be arsed.
Dermot Washington (Roscommon) Talented minor corner forward of 92 - Armagh boys might remember this fella. Crashed & burned.

The list is endless - I look at my  club team & can safely say only 3 or 4  currently playing at the moment would make a dream selection had all players in the 19-32 bracket made themselves available for selection.
