Sean O'Neill, Frank McGuigan, John Joe O'Reilly.

Most football followers of a certain vintage in Cornafean would maintain that John Joe, for all his talents, was not as good a footballer as his brother Big Tom.

When John Lennon was asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world, he replied, "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles!"

Difficult to pick three there are so many so I'll bend the rules in my own home Counties direction and suggest that any lads with three All Ireland Senior medals have to be up there regardless of the era. Step forward Mick Higgins. I'm also fairly sure Phil the Gunner Brady and Tony Tighe have the three (not sure both lined out in 1948 but would be fairly certain).

Still waiting for the replacements to come through unfortunately

Jaysus that's tough one to name just three...

From our own county...  John Joe O'Reilly, his brother big Tom, Jim Reilly from Kingscourt, two from my own club Charlie Gallagher who until recently was the top scorer in the Ulster Championship and Hughie O'Reilly (involved in every one of Cavan's All Irelands)... feck this I'm away to start a Cavan one!!

From Down, Sean O'Neill, in fairness Peter Canavan was decent enough  ;) Big Frank McGuigan too. A good few names stand out from the early 90's Linden, Carr, Downey...

feck this impossible

Cornafean, this John Lennon you mention is not known in GAA circles - was he related to the Down legend Joe Lennon ?

Can only comment on the last 15 years:

Canavan
McGeeney
Tohill

...with a nod to Mickey Linden.

Sean O'Neill and JJ O'Reilly made the team of the Millenium so I'll assume they were decent footballers too.

not wanting to go off the topic here, but how much longer will it be til sean cavanagh's name is mentioned in this sort of company? still many years ahead but looks like he'll go down as a great. question is will he be in the same breath as those already mentioned.

Hard enough to name the greatest Ulster 15 of the last 30 years without trying to narrow it down to 3! Impossible task.

I think of all the Tyrone guys Cavanagh will prove the most impressive when his career is over and we look back over this peak in Tyrones powers.

You are correct about these guys. From the 30's guys like Packie Devlin played in a few AI's too. One of Ulsters forgotton is Charlie Gallagher who was the top scorer in the province until a few yrs ago. He was overshadowed by the Down team of the 60's but I don't understand why he never gets a mention at all anymore. Especially so when players like Frank McGuigans names are dropped into these conversations all the time.

Stop in anywhere in Cootehill for a pint and mention football and within 5 minutes Charlie will be mentioned but yea I agree with ya Myles.   From time to time, he gets mentioned as one of the best forwards who never won an All-Ireland and rightly so.

I was on the oul fellas shoulders in the pisses of rain in Croker in '69 (still in the womb of course, a huge feat of biology). Charlie was subbed the first day and we get a 21 yard free with 5 minutes to go. Charlies replacement, who was recently in a very senior position on the Ulster Council, made a dogs balls of same, match ended in a draw and the rest, as we say, is history. Between 59 and 69 Cavan and Down met in 8 Ulster Finals, 4 each, Down won three All Irelands we didn't make it past the semis once. Our last truly competitive outfit-Ray Carolan, Charlie Gallagher and Gabriel Kelly would be my mainstays from that era
